Hello! I am the author of the Purdue blog Hammer & Rails. I am looking for information about this Friday's game against the Jackrabbits. I did a brief preview earlier this week, but I was hoping someone would volunteer to come over and do a FanPost about the Jackrabbits on my site, which is part of SBNation. Good luck Friday!

Re: Looking for SDSU basketball info
With all due respect Bolier....
You had a few things wrong on your preview (and not sure why you labeled sdsufans a used unfriendly site):
* This is actually our 5th season od D1, but just our third in the Summit League. We won an opening round game against Summit power Oral Roberts last year in the conference tourney.
* Kai Williams has played half the minutes as usual b/c he is hurt and also b/c of the blowouts of the first two games (we led Wyoming by 20 at half, and as much as 30 in the 2nd half).
* Sargent did play against play against mayville State. Like the other starters he played less than 20 minutes and he was 0-4 or 0-5 from the field.
No biggee, I don't expect you to get everything right about a program you've probably never heard of. But hey, we did about beat Minnesota in football last Saturday! We lost by three after not allowing their offense to score a TD and held them to their second fewest yards of the year (second only to Penn State).

With all due respect you're asking for horse to follow cart. Or, in Boilermaker terms, for beer to follow chaser.
Your post says" "In all honestly I don't think we need to be glued to our TV sets for the opener. Even with LewJack and Sandi Marcius both being hurt we have little trouble with the Jackrabbits."
You might have more trouble than you think if your team goes in with this attitude.
Welcome to the board, though. It's VERY user friendly.

Re: Looking for SDSU basketball info
Here is my view of the jackrabbits
A very deep team, the deepest Nagy has had since going D-I. Lots of perimeter players, many guys can handle the ball, they'll run at times but are good in the half court as well. Unlike the past the team is not dependent upon Kai, Clint and Garrett. Though when they are hot the team is probably doing better, the bench is a lot stronger this year then it has been in the past and gives the team a spark at time. Dale Moss and Michael Palarca who both come of the bench are spark plugs and really turnup the energy. The Center possition is the only weak spot on the team, not because of Anthony Cordova who is a stud and out played Brackins last year against Iowa State but when he goes off the court we turn to underclassmen and guys who are playing out of possition. The Jacks still have problems of turning it off for periods of time, not coming out early in games and closing halfs and games but should improve greatly this year.

Re: Looking for SDSU basketball info
I can't tell you what to expect from the rabbits. This is just the third game of the season, and this year's squad is very different from last year's.
This is the first time that Nagy has assembled a roster that looks like what he wants his rosters to look like.
It is deep, versatile, and capable of shooting from the perimeter.
However, Purdue is not likely to see the full depth, as Nagy will probably hold back minutes for the freshmen bigs.
Nagy is looking to setup a 9 or 10 man rotation of players that are good shots, disciplined on defense, and play a very up-tempo style. In short, it's a team that's built to wear out other teams, score in transition, and tear up zones.
If you want to watch any player in particular, I'd suggest Clint Sargent.

Re: Looking for SDSU basketball info
Sure, if you can post it sometime today that would be great. Thanks for the information here, everyone.
I know the quotes seems kind of arrogant, but honestly if we're the true #7 team in the nation we should have littel trouble in games like these. we're heavily favored, but I have seen plenty of upsets happen to know to be worried. just two years ago we were upset on our home floor by Wofford. We then went out and started something like 12-1 in Big Ten play.

Re: Looking for SDSU basketball info
Fear the Rabbit BoilerTMIll!
I'm looking forward to seeing this game. No idea how we will match up. This Jackrabbit team is by far the most athletic team we have had at the D1 level. We should be able to play loose because we have nothing to loose.
Obviously Purdue is loaded so we will need to catch them on an off night and we will have to play well. Purdue is missing 2 players for this game, correct? Certainly doesn't hurt the Jacks.
My expectation is the Jacks will play very hard and play well and then let's see where that goes.
Wish I was there with a Mai Tai in my hand!

Re: Looking for SDSU basketball info
The Jackrabbits in a nutshell:
Very good perimeter team, when shots are falling the offense can run smoothly. Guards and wings can penetrate but ability to finish depends on the interior defense of the opponent. We need to get to the line more than we did against Wyoming although we shot so well that there wasn't a great need to draw fouls. Did a great job with "back doors" against the Cowboys. We have to get out and push the ball which leads to more possessions and increased chances for turnovers, have to limit to's to 15 or less to have a chance vs Purdue.
Cordova plays bigger than he is but doesn't have a lot of help inside. If outside shots are going down and penetration is limited we will struggle to put points on the board. Rebounding has to be a priority because we have to work so hard to overcome our size difference. Need to protect against offensive boards and stay out of foul trouble.
Deep bench allows us to scrap and press on defense. Fouls committed on the defensive end could hurt us though, especially inside. After Cordova we really don't have any proven inside scoring threat.
So, we need to take and make a high percentage of outside shots, play 40 minutes of defense and value every rebound and possession against a much more talented Purdue team. Stay out of foul trouble but be aggressive. All the pressure is on them, we have nothing to lose.We are here to add what we can to life, not get what we can from life. -Sir William Osler
We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.

Re: Looking for SDSU basketball info
I'll go with the "just the second full season of DI eligiblity." Our women could only go to the NCAA tourney last year. The years before that, they had to play in the WNIT.
I think you did a good job trying to get a solid write-up. There just isn't enough to get from 1 game(the Wyoming one). Mayville State was like an exhibition game. SDSU was up 30 and played about 14 players. How can you judge playing time, points/game, etc... when the starters only play 15 minutes?
Kai was injured and was just coming back. He played solid against Wyoming but not as great against Mayville. He didn't get enough minutes to really judge much in the Mayville game though. He will always hit the boards hard. His shot struggled some the last couple years but I think it was because of too much playing time(no depth) and having to play power forward. He can play PF but all game wore him down(my opinion). He shouldn't have that problem.
A lot about SDSU will rely on the 3 point shot. I think they have their best shooting team in about 10 years. Purdue will be too athletic and big to match-up down low. If SDSU can hit several long shots early, that will stretch the defense so AC will have room to post up and the other players to drive.
SDSU isn't a team the should scare a team like Purdue but they are better then they have been in several years.
They placed 10th in the Summit League 2 years ago.
Last year, they returned 90% of their players and moved up to 7th.
This year, they return about 95% of their players and I think they'll get either 2nd or 3rd in the conference. Oakland is too tough.
Not only do they have everybody back but they added 4 freshmen that might get some playing time against Purdue. Wolters will start at PG. He will free up Sargent and Callahan for their 3 point shots. He came in as one of the better recruits at SDSU. That's why they expect a true freshman to start on a team that returns it's starting PG. White is a 6'6" player that can play anywhere from the 1-4. He might not be strong enough to play the 4 but his size(height is there). He hit 4 of 6 3-pointers against Mayville. Fiegen is 6'7". He's built bigger than White but he's still a true freshman. He'll get some time spelling AC down low. Rader is 6'7", too. I heard a lot about him when he came in. He's listed as a G/F. He hasn't played much and I don't think he'll see the court much in this game.

Re: Looking for SDSU basketball info
I'm all for going into a game ready to play, but they're number 7 in the nation and have a lot of players back. I don't see this being a real possibility. If it happens, it will be the biggest upset of the year in college basketball. I'm just being realistic here. I'm cheering for the Rabbits of course! Is this game going to be on TV at all?Disclaimer: This post may contain assumptions and/or opinions related to Jackrabbit Athletics.
