11 turnovers for the game was a very nice turnaround for the team. The team played with a lot of intensity in the second half. I have been very pleased with the change in Andre's play in the past month. He is driving to the basket and his rebounding has improved. Heien hit his first 2 threes for the game and that caused UVSU to pay more attention to him. Matt was driving to the basket. Free throw shooting was very good (23 of 29). Mo played well too. Ben was off tonight but like Coach Nagy said, with the team handling the ball and not turning it over, we can hang in games. Nice win tonight.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--
BROOKINGS, SD - South Dakota State went on a 24-6 run midway through the second half and defeated Utah Valley State 66-56 in non-conference men’s basketball Saturday night at Frost Arena.
After the game was tied at 31 at halftime, Utah Valley State opened a 43-38 lead before SDSU redshirt freshman Matt Cadwell took over.
Cadwell scored 17 of his game high 24 points after intermission to lead the Jacks. His basket at 11:22 to play cut the margin to 43-40. After Mohamed Berte hit a pair of free throws and Andre Gilbert one to tie the game, Cadwell scored back-to-back baskets giving SDSU a 47-43 lead, and the Jacks led the rest of the game.
Cadwell’s two free throws with 2:03 to play put the Jacks on top 62-49. . . .
SDSU dominated the boards after halftime, finishing with a 27-12 advantage over the second half after trailing 13-12 in that department at halftime.
Mohamed Berte finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Andre Gilbert had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Gilbert started and played all 40 minutes. . . .
SDSU is now 4-11 and will play at North Dakota State Saturday. Utah Valley State is 6-10 and plays at Albany State, NY, next Saturday.

BROOKINGS - For at least one night, the buzz returned to Frost Arena for the South Dakota State men.
With a second half reminiscent of many of Coach Scott Nagy's better teams, the Jackrabbits made the right adjustments to knock off Utah Valley State 66-56 on Saturday night in front of 1,551 fans.
SDSU (4-11) trailed by five points midway through the final period when the switch flipped. The Jacks began to dominate on the glass, defend with aggression and quickness and didn't commit the senseless turnovers that have plagued them all season.
"There has to be a point where you get that figured out and quit turning it over and quit forcing plays and just be patient," Nagy said after his team won for the first time since Dec. 12. "We're starting to do that."
Saturday was the Jackrabbits' only home game for the month of January.
"We needed this win," said junior forward Mohamed Berte, who finished with 14 points. "We've been losing a lot, so this was a really big win."
Guard Matt Cadwell had 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, including six in a 9-0 run that gave the Jackrabbits the lead for good.
Utah Valley (6-10) managed to pare it to a 47-45 game after SDSU's four-minute run, but the Jackrabbits went 13-for-14 from the line in the final 7:11 to seal the win.
Redshirt freshman Andre Gilbert had his second career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Berte finished with six of his nine boards on the offensive end. SDSU had a 27-12 second-half rebounding advantage and a 39-25 edge for the game.
Gilbert returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Dec. 8 at Nebraska, in part because Nagy said the athletic 6-foot-7 swingman has started taking better care of the ball.
SDSU, which entered the game averaging more than 21 turnovers a game, committed just 11 against Utah Valley. The Jacks had 24 turn in Monday's 78-73 loss at Montana State.
"Obviously, 11 turnovers is a terrific game. A terrific job by (SDSU's) guards," Utah Valley State coach Dick Hunsaker said. "I thought that they played with more energy and enthusiasm down the stretch, and that was the telling point of the game."
SDSU's biggest key defensively for was figuring out the Wolverines reserve guard Richard Troyer. The sophomore from Belize - who entered the game averaging just 2.7 points - hit four 3-pointers and had 14 points in the opening half. But the Jacks held him to just five points on 2-for-6 shooting in the second period.
Since they don't return to Frost until Feb. 2 against Southwest Minnesota State, the Jackrabbits felt they needed this boost heading into a five-game road swing that starts next Saturday against new rival North Dakota State in Fargo.
"It's a good start," Gilbert said. "We started at home, and we'll just go from there. We have a big game at NDSU, and I expect to win all the rest of our games. I really do."
How many minutes did Loney and Kleinjan play? They did not score but did they contribute to our big win? Any minutes at all for Frias and Casey? Do we continue to play with a short rotation?
Go Jacks!!

Loney played 25 min and had 6 points, 5 boards.
Klienjan played 11 min but did not score (didn't take a shot). He did have 2 steals though.
Its amazing how much we are relying on our freshman this year. Last night Beran was pretty much nonexistent, I think he finished with 2 pts and 3 rb. Our offense for the last ten minutes of the game pretty much consisted of giving the ball to Matt Cadwell and setting screens all over the top of the key for him to either get a shot or a drive to the basket. It was fun to watch, the kid is amazing. Berte and Gilbert also looked very good, Berte is simply a monster on the boards and had some nice moves around the basket, and Gilbert really seems to be starting to relax and play within himself. He had 3 or 4 good drives to the basket and finished them off nicely, a double/double is great to see.
This was the first game I've been to since the Manhattan game, and its the best I've seen us play. The turnovers were gone, we were patient on offense, and while we struggled defending the 3 again in the first half, it was more that the guy was unconscious that us not defending him, most of the times there was a hand in the face.
Hopefully we can carry it through and play another solid game against NDSU, we have some revenge to exact from the football season

Yep, everyone seems to be more comfortable running the new offense. Kleinjan/Heien float on the wing, Gilbert/Cadwell coming off screens and going to the hole, and Beran/Gilbert/Loney setting screens and looking for a dish off the drive. Everyone doing what they do best. It's also nice to see multiple double digit scorers. Some nights the drivers will score a majority of the points, some (like in Montana) the big guys will do the scoring. This was also one of the better games I've seen the team play this year.
“I used to be with it. But then they changed what it was. Now what I’m with isn’t it, and what’s it seems scary and wierd. It’ll happen to you.” — Abe Simpson

With a young team, you have to wait patiently, watching them make their mistakes, until the time comes when they start to "get it." I think that's where this team has been, really for all of last year and this year up until now. That's what has been driving Nagy and the rest of the coaches (not to mention we fans) absolutely crazy.
But, with a young team, there comes a point where the players start thinking "Oh! that's how it's supposed to work!" and the game slows down for them, just a little bit. The players relax and have a bit more fun with the game. Shots that were short (or long) start going in. Free throws get easier to shoot.
