For us right now, it's just another game we need to win.

We'll worry about the rivalry later (like maybe in Brookings )

I would put the Bison ahead of us right now. We will need to play well for 40 minutes to take a game on the road. With only 6 bodies to count on that is always a challenge.

            Fresh faces await rivalry game
NDSU hosts Jacks today, but teams look different from last meeting

One of the few semblances of familiarity for the South Dakota State men comes tonight when they face Division I partner North Dakota State, even if both teams have plenty of fresh faces.

Only one starter, SDSU's Ben Beran, returns from last year's two meetings. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Bison Sports Arena in Fargo.

NDSU (8-8) starts four redshirt freshmen and a junior college transfer. The Jackrabbits (4-11) start two redshirt freshmen, a juco transfer and an NAIA export alongside forward Beran.

"I think (the new players) have given them new life," SDSU coach Scott Nagy said of the Bison. "Young kids like that can give you enthusiasm."

Four of the Bison starters average double figures in scoring, led by redshirt freshman guard Ben Woodside's 16.7 points.

Beran and fellow junior Andy Kleinjan are the only two players on either roster with North Central Conference experience. Just seven players - three for NDSU, four for the Jacks - were active for last year's two meetings.

"We need to be good. Even though we're young, the pressure is on our guys to go out and produce," NDSU coach Tim Miles said. "We don't have a lot of options. What Scott's gone through this year at South Dakota State, they're in the same boat."

SDSU is 0-6 in road games this year, while NDSU is 5-1 at home. However, the Jackrabbits defeated the Bison twice a year ago.

Both teams are coming off victories over Utah Valley State last week, with the Jackrabbits snapping a four-game losing skid.

"I think our kids feel better about themselves, but North Dakota State is playing with a lot of confidence," Nagy said, "We've played a lot of similar teams, and (the Bison) have won more games or played better. They feel this is their year to get a chance at us."

              Re: North Dakota State

I just spoke with the NDSU ticket office. The guy said there are plenty of seats left. I did look at getting them on line, but all they would offer me there was up high in the corner. I fell for that when I bought football tickets, but the ticket office is open all day so I'll take my chances when I get to Fargo.

I'm excited. It is my first chance at a basketball game this season. My calendar looks like I should be able to
make it to Brookings to watch the ladies play IPFW on Thursday, too.

Walrus resembles a walrus and I'll wear an SDSU shirt. ;D Say hi if you see me at the game.

              GO JACKRABBITS ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

                NDSU, SDSU renew rivalry

                By Jeff Kolpack, The Forum
                Published Saturday, January 14, 2006

Unlike football, the winner of the South Dakota State at North Dakota State men’s basketball game tonight does not earn a traveling trophy or gain an advantage in the conference standings.

It doesn’t matter. It’s the first of two games between the two this season and for all practical purposes, it has the same meaning as a postseason game.

“It’s one of the few things we have to hang our hat on,” said SDSU head coach Scott Nagy.

The two NCAA Division I reclassifying programs hook up at 7 p.m. at Bison Sports Arena. For NDSU, 8-8, it’s a chance to add to an already successful season. . . .

For SDSU, it’s a chance for a big win in an otherwise disappointing season. The Jackrabbits are 4-11 in a season that Nagy says “is not as bad as some people think.”

The Jacks sport losses to Kentucky, Manhattan, Illinois, Marquette and Wisconsin-Milwaukee – all situated in the top 50 in the latest RPI poll. NDSU beat the second-highest rated RPI team on its schedule, No. 53 Northern Illinois, 57-56 at the Montana State tournament.

The Bison lost to No. 39 Manhattan and No. 79 Kansas State.

“Tim did a lot better job of scheduling than we did,” Nagy said. “We bit off more than we can chew, particularly early. It crushed our team to the point of where the kids didn’t feel good about themselves.”

The Jacks are still trying to recover from personnel losses, Nagy said. Forward Steve Holdren, one of the team’s top two scorers, tore his ACL early in the season and is done for the year.

Forward Joe Green left school after last season and forward Jake Wenig left last Christmas. Moreover, standout forward Matt Jones, whose career ended three years ago because of chronic fatigue, would have been a senior this year.

“We’re still trying to recover from so many losses in the past few years,” Nagy said. “No question Matt Jones would have been the best player to ever play here. That’s still a big hole we’ve never been able to fill.”

                Go State! ;D

Big game. Maybe this will be the pay-off for those tough road trips to places such as Kentucky and Illinois. Compared to games like those, playing in Fargo shouldn't be a problem. Get off to a half decent start, and SDSU should have a very good chance to win. Go, Jackrabbits!

                      Re: North Dakota State

Here's the plan here at Filbert's household:

6:00 CST: Put the wings into the oven at 350
6:45 CST: Turn the wings over
7:00 CST: Jacks/Bison on the Internet, Broncos/Pats muted on the tube
7:10 CST: Raise oven temp to 425, put the buffalo fries (flavored french fries) into the oven
                      7:15 CST: Filbert flips fries
7:25 CST: Remove wings and fries from the oven, Filbert and Snookums enjoys trashy junk-food supper as well as a double-digit first-half lead by the Runnin' Rabbits.
7:45 CST (approx) Finish wings/fries, enjoy extravagant halftime Rabbits lead, clean up supper.
9:00 CST (approx) bask in the afterglow of a dominating Jackrabbits win over the school with the american cow herd mascot, fire up the women's game internet feed.
10:00 CST (approx) go two for two when the beloved Broncos whip the pasty Patriots
11:00 CST (approx) make it three for three when the Rabbits whup up on San Jose State.
                      11:30 CST (approx) Never you mind . . .
                      "I think we'll be OK"

                          Re: North Dakota State

Not a bad plan filbert. For me its burgers on the grill and tipping back a few beers I've had in my car since the end of football season.

Hate to disappoint you, but the Patriots win on a last second field goal by the greatest kicker in the history of the NFL.
