  • New promotions at Frost . . .

Nice promotional ideas in this week's Collegian--looks like they're continuing to go after the students (which is a good idea):

At all home basketball games, a new publication "The Rabbit Den Reader" is available for fans. The reader has rosters for both teams, as well as information about SDSU and the opposing school.

The SDSU promotions department is looking for students to become student leaders at basketball games in the student section. The student leaders would encourage participation and lead the students in cheers so everyone is in unison. (Hmm, isn't that what the cheerleaders are supposed to do? - Filb.)

Daktronics is sponsoring a student fan of the game. The student fan of the game wins a cap, t-shirt and entry into a drawing for a $250 television.

Wednesday's game is military appreciation night. Any current military personnel will receive free admittance to the game.

At the NDSU game, a Coke drinking contest will take place. Students wearing yellow will have the option of participating in the contest.

I saw the den reader at the last Women's game I attended. It would be nice for those students that don't want to buy programs, but I realize they can't put too much info on there..

I do have a complaint for the programs. They haven't been putting the opposing teams' schedules and results this year. They do have a good few paragraph run down on the 1st page, but not much detail...

Student leaders are a common thing at most big-time DI basketball programs. I know at Illinois and Duke, for example, they actually have practices and cheer sheets for the student cheering section so everyone is on the same page during the game. "Lets Go Duke" and other cheers are typically led by the student section. The Rabbit Den Reader is a neat idea modeled after these programs, although it probably won't catch on until we win a few games.

Here is a nifty article on the Cameron Crazies and how their cheers seem so coordinated, if I can figure out the hyperlink thing.

At Illinois all of the students immediately around the court at assembly are called the "Orange Crush" They are selected and like SF Rabbit Fan pointed out they are an organized group with meetings and practices-pretty cool. I would love to see us do something like that in the future.

We had discussed this before. I mentioned the student organizations that operate the Hawks' Nest at Iowa and the Gene Pool (for Gene Keady) at Purdue. I talked to Dr. Oien about it and he told me they had something in the works. This looks like a really good start and I think they're on the right track. I predict that next year this student section will really start to go. There have been nice signs of life this year.

And it's nice just to be talking about something other than the awful news of this morning.
