  • 2009 team status

Interesting comments from Coach Nagy regarding the Anthony Davis situation. He made the remarks on an Argus Leader live chat with TV:
"He'll finish his school. But he's not going to play basketball - he's physically incapable. But he will graduate with a degree in history and go on. It's unfortunate. That would really give us a better chance this year. We did get a scholarship waiver."
The coach also said Davis' scholarship is going to Griffan Callahan. Apparently one more schollie is available for 2010, and it's expected to be awarded soon.

This is what I heard from Coach shortly after the season, they knew then that he would never be physically able to play again and they expected to get a waiver. I can't remember if he said who the scholarship would go to specifically but I pretty sure it was Grif. I'm glad Anthony will be able to complete his education with the same amount of support promised him by the athletic scholarship and wish him the best. The condition he is suffering from is certainly unusual and definitely a bit of a mystery to those in the medical field.

I don't follow MBB close enough to know what's been going on with Anthony. Is this a Matt Jones type of medical mystery or was there an injury that's causing the problems? I don't need to know specifics as I respect privacy, just wondering what happened.

Not a mystery like Matt Jones' illness. The problem for Anthony is not related to an injury, its a neurologic condition that causes muscle weakness. The cause isn't known and there is no specific treatment to reverse the condition. Without being specific its in the family of conditions known as myelopathy or myelitis, google away.

Anthony Davis is no longer listed on the roster. It would have been fun to see him contribute the last two years. I suspect this would clear the way for a scholarship offer to Jordan Dykstra for next year.

I guess they already got the waiver and the scholarship's been allocated, to one of the Callahans (but I forget which one).

Davis will graduate as, quite likely, one of the tallest students the history department has ever seen.

Griff. Garrett had a schollie when he came to SDSU.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

Nagy's remark, IIRC was that one of the Callahans was otherwise due to 'go off scholarship'--but I can't remember which one it was.

Garrett graduates so he will be going off a schollie.

My recollection is that, due to Davis' waiver, a Callahan won't have to go off scholarship -this- year, not in '10/'11

I don't know, anyone remember the center from Yankton that came in during the late 80's? Can't remember his name right now but I do remember he was a history major. IIRC (darn now I'm using them) his first name was Mike and Thorson pulled his scholly part way through his career.

Just hit me, was it Mike Hanson?

It was Mike Hanson and he ended up transferring to Auggie? Don't think he played very much at Auggie either.
