  • Greatest Individual Performance you have witnessed

So I'm sick of hearing/reading about Kobe's 81 point game on Sunday. But it got me thinking, what would people list as the greatest individual performance as it relates to SDSU Basketball. And since there were 5 pages posted on an NDSU game I figured this might get a few takers. Plust the board has been a little dead lately. And this gives us younger guys a chance to a. find out what the older generation witnessed and b. share our recent history.

    Here's the guidelines:
    1. Game must have involved either SDSU's men or women's basketball teams
    2. Can be either SDSU Player or opponent who put on the performance
    3. You must have witnessed the game in person (not listened to it on radio or heard from a friend of a friend of a friend who was at the game)

This may have/probably has been done already, but it's a new year so why not try again.

As far as outstanding performance by an opponent goes I have two that still hurt a little.

Both were regional final games played at Frost.

The first against Northern when the Miller kid (can't remember the first name) went off from 3 pt line and beat us.

The other was against Metro when the Australian kid pretty much did the same thing. I think he averaged about 10 pts for the season and he put up over 30 on us to beat us.

I think my memory on the details is a little fuzzy because of the pain they still cause me.

There are too many, I need to defer an answer for this one.

SDSU against Fort Hayes St. in Frost Arena. The best action on the court and the crowd was just rockin. I swear the bleachers were going to break. Sat second row in the student section. Was there for both the Northern State game and the Metro game. Hated those moments.

I think two big thrills this year were the OT win over Denver, and followed with a win over UMKC. And whatever out current roster does for the remainder of the season in terms of close wins will be very thrilling.

I totally agree about the Northern and Metro games. I was at both games. They are both still painful. However, some people forget that against Metro Schantz had a great look at the basket at the end of the game. Metro won it all that year.

The UND game a few years back was another exciting game. I believe it was the Wells Fargo Finals. It Jerome Beasley's senior year. He had an awesome game and played the crowd the whole game. I think we ended up winning by 10-15 points.

Anyone who had the privalage to see Mark Tetzlaff play witnessed several GREAT individual performances. However, the 1985 regional championship game at Frost Arena won by the Jacks was one of the greatest games played at Frost, and Tetz had alot to do with it.

Thought of another one....vs. Northern during Eric Klein's years. I wasn't very old, but I remember a 3 OT game with Klein and Luetjens (sp?) having good games. Not sure, but that might have been in the Rops and Jermaine Showers era. I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I know it was a good game.

The killer combo of Dave Thomas and the late Lee Colburn deserves mention somewhere, but the mid 1970s is too long ago for me to recall a specific game. So how about Mark Tetzlaff in the mid 1980s during the home stretch of the Rabbits national title chase. (They finished second, losing a close championship game.)

Showers and Rops played in the early to mid 90's I believe. Not sure when the other two played. Would be nice to have Showers running the point nowadays.

That was a good game. I remember fans giving Klein a hard time for not making it in the NCC and leaving Augie. Showers was such a fluent dribbler. I always got a kick out of teams trying to trap him. Q was good at that too but Jermaine was a more consistent scorer.

Re: Greatest Individual Performance you have witne

For what it's worth, here's my short list. It's based on what I've heard over the years:

                              1) SDSC vs. Prairie View A&M in 1961. The playoff game was played in the Barn. Prairie View featured a future NBA star, Zelmo Beaty. State won the game 88-84. Many of the veteran Jack's fans recall this as the greatest game they ever watched on the campus.

                              2) SDSU vs. Cal-State Hayward in 1985. The line to get into Frost Arena stretched for blocks. The Cal-State players were in awe of the crowd and they walked out on the basketball floor and took pictures of the crowd. Mark Tetzlaff lead the Jacks to a victory. The Jacks eventually made it to the national championship game but lost under difficult circumstances.

                              3) SDSU vs Augustana in 1985. This game is referred to as "The Miracle at Frost Arena." SDSU was down by 5 with a few ticks left on the clock but ended up winning at the buzzer.

                              4) SDSU vs. Northern in 1998. There is nothing to say except "ouch."

                              5) SDSU vs Ft. Hays State in 1997. It's been mentioned here before. Ft. Hays was the defending national champion and ranked number one in the country. With the crowd's help, the Jacks destroyed them.

Note: I believe the records show that the largest crowd ever to see a game was in either 1989 or 1990 when we played Augustana. That can't be true. The largest crowd ever was the Cal-State Hayward game when 9,339 people attended.
