Re: point guard now and future
2009-10
1. Nate Wolters- FR
2. Michael Palarca- JR
3. Chad White- FR
2010-11
1. Nate Wolters- SO
2. Michael Palarca- SR
3. Chad White- SO
4. Brayden Carlson- RFR?
Also last season towards the end of year, when Moss came alive, he started running some point so that gives us another option there. White could end up anywhere from playing the 1 to the 3, but Nagy has expressed interest in him at the PG. Palarca's decision making improved last season I thought, plays good defense, and makes some timely shots. But if the Wolters is the real deal, we could be in for a treat. And I am not sure where Brayden Carlson fits in position wise.

Re: point guard now and future
I actually like who we have. We have multiple people who can play the point (Garrett, Clint, Michael, Chad, Nate, and possibly Brayden), but they are also scoring threats (Palarca was a scoring threat in high school so maybe he do it in college too). We really don't need to have one set person as the ball dribbler when they can all do it.Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

Re: point guard now and future
I think we all saw in Ben Woodside how dangerous a point guard that has the ability to knock down a good percentage from beyon the arc and take you to the hole if you put to much pressure on the perimeter can be. When the defense has to totally respect the ability of the point to score it opens up opportunities for everyone on the team. A good point raises the level of everyone on the court.
The guys that played the point last year don't have that complete package but are all very capable players and deserve minutes. Here's my mini breakdown.
Pallarca:
pros- tenacious defense, open court threat, speed
cons- poor 3-point %, only 5' 4"
Mike is a good defender that seems to really rattle his opponent. What can you say? At his height he has challenges. Defenders are able to play off him which shuts down his ability to drive. If he can develop into even an average 3-point threat it would open things up for him. He's the one true point on the team.
Moss:
pros- incredible athlete, great rebounder, mis-match when posted up
cons- not an outside threat
His athleticism demands minutes. He really improved last year and understood his role. If he was a decent three point shooter he is playing in a major conference. I look forward to seeing his improvement over the off-season.
Sargent:
pros- Great 3-point threat, mis-match when posted-up, good height
cons- lacks speed,
Clint isn't really a point but he has had to play there at times out of necessity. He did an okay job. He lacks explosive speed to get to the bucket but makes up for it by being a pure shooter from outside. I look for Clint at the 2 to have a great season.
It probably sounds like I'm down on these guys but that isn't the case at all. They are all quality players that we really need to play a big roll to be succesful. Clint may be our MVP.
Next year is going to be a blast! It will be fun to see what the new players bring to the table. If one of these guys turns out to be a point that can shoot and take it to the whole then it will benefit all of the players on team.
One thing that is going to be great about this years team is that we are going to have depth that we haven't seen since the D2 days. Our opponents better come ready to run because that is what is going to happen. Constant pressure and relentless effort on defense. The bench is going to be a huge asset from here forward.
Having the tournament in Sioux Falls for another couple years/permanently is going to be another big advantage. That is going to be a lot of fun!

Re: point guard now and future
I think Palarca is going to have a hard time getting on the floor his last two years at SDSU. His lack of scoring ability and height are just too much to overcome. One of his best games of his career was at ORU late last year. He ran the team well, handled Jarvis and we had very, very few turnovers. If he were able to score the all we win that game by 7+.
I think 3-4 guys could be in the mix next year....
Callahan - probably starts the year off at the point. The lineup could change quite a bit throughout the year w/ the development of Rader, Fiegen, White, Wolters, Pederson, Grif-Cal, etc.
Wolters - Might not be ready to lead the team right away but I think he has the tools to be thee point guard (logging the most minutes at point) soon.
Moss - I love the energy he brings off the bench. The kid can take it to the rack and has nice size. His lack of a jumper hurts him. I'm excited to see how much he's developed this offseason. I think his future is more of a super sub - logging minutes at the 1, 2 and even 3.
White - Not sure he's good enough at the point to take much time from the above guys (or even Palarca). But a 6'6 kid at the point is mighty intruiging isn't it? His all-around skills are more suited as a 3. I like him in the middle/on the FT line against a zone defense playing point forward. I think he could really dismantle a zone defense. I'm not sure how much of a scorer he'll be at the next level, at least his first couple of years.

Re: point guard now and future
We have a lot of guys that can play multiple positions. Some as many as 3 which gives us a lot of options that haven't been there in the last few years. Nice problem to have. competition to get on the floor should be intense. One thing is for sure, if they don't want to give it all on defense and rebound hard they will be the last one off the bench.
Identifying a true point will be a plus. After that, it will be interesting to see who makes the starting line-up.
Can't wait!
