I see your point. I'm not talking about a recruit having some minor issues before he comes to campus such as shoplifting, etc, but big ones of the sexual type. I'll chime in more on this topic after the outcome of whatever happens with Berte and Gilbert.
Now that I think about it, I have a counterpoint to my own point. I'm a self-proclaimed Duke fan, and when they recruited Shelden Williams out of Oklahoma he had been charged with some type of sexual assault, but eventually cleared. Although I was very skeptical about him coming to campus, he has been nothing but an ideal student athlete. Now I don't have the entire story on what happened with the Landlord, but judging him by his past 4 years at Duke I agree with Coach K's decision to bring him on campus. Now if he had been convicted, that is a totally different story.
I'll reserve judgment on whoever recruited Berte and Gilbert until all the facts come to light.
Reserving judgement and minimizing speculation about such a sensitive subject is the best policy.
We are here to add what we can to life, not get what we can from life. -Sir William Osler
We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.
Nobody but fans of opposing teams and the most unreasonable of critics seem to question Coach Nagy's future, at this early juncture. Support for him runs wide and deep. SDSU is fortunate that he has stayed on to guide the Jackrabbits through what we all knew would be a tough transition. Nagy has had to deal with extra heavy burdens of prolonged player illness, transfers, injuries, and now an alleged investigation. Recruiting players to Brookings has got to be difficult enough without weak speculation about the future of the head coach. If anything, I hope the the administration is trying to extend his contract.
I have seen the Bison play about three times this year besides listening on the radio. My own feeling is that NDSU is our measuring stick, more so than any other D1 school. Despite winning last night, it was emotion that carried SDSU, certainly not talent and maybe team work made the difference for this one game, but other games we have not played as a team. '
The one thing that has stood out about NDSU, is that maybe some of their red shirt freshman other than Woodside and Moorman are not outstanding and real flashy, but they do know how to play as a unit, they pass, they assist, they play a tight defense, they know were their other four teammate are all the time. This is what is missing with the current Jacks. The Bison, too have had an season ending injury in a player Lunde. We have to wait to see how he will add to their equation. Plus they got four guys on the red shirts. I wished SDSU program was at the same level. Right now despite last nights win, we are about a year and a half behind. Troy Larsen has done all the recruiting leg work by the way.
Other than Holdren, we have had no one come to campus ready to play D1 ball. We have guys that need a year of red shirt, and then the following year we dont know if they are going to cut the mustard or not. This tells me we have settled for the best choices. I do question the recruiting networks used and have we used all the contacts available? If we had we used all those contacts, we would not be in the mess we are in now. I wonder if we are even close in getting the best out of the state of Iowa.
BTW only Cadwell is now playing of the three you mentioned. I think he is a very good player, but holding in a red shirt status last year was a big mistake.
I am not make all these choices and decisions, but the people who are very accountable for their actions. I still get my gov annuity and SS check so I dont have to worry about these decisions, but by gosh I feel like these decisions should be questioned and 226 wins do not warrant a free pass.
SDSUFAN,
You are just plain WRONG on this one.
You can't have it both ways. You talk about red shirting players as if it was a problem. However we have always red shirted players this is nothing new to the program. We did it all the time when were D-II. You also seem to hold the "Mighty" Bison in high esteem and you talk about their red shirt freshmen in glowing terms. Key there is "red shirt" freshmen. Why is it good for NDSU to red shirt kids but if SDSU does it, it is a problem? Another thought if NDSU and their coaching staff is so great how did they lose to 5 scholarship players, 3 walk-ons and 4 football players who have been with the team less then a month?
Besides the win over Wisconsin (where UW shot pathetically) and the SDSU game (where NDSU shot incredibly) what quality wins do you see on their schedule? Eastern Michigan? Mississippi Valley State? Maybe it is the big wins over Mayville State or Jamestown that have you so enamored.
Sounds to me like you talked about being patient but after 2 seasons into this deal you are ready to head back to D-II with the rest of the FES gang.
You and Cossack (and the rest of the AK gang) want to know where are the stud players? Well didn't Matt Cadwell just tie Austin Hansen's freshemen scoring record for a single game? The difference is Matt did it against a D-I school playing with a supporting cast that still has D-II players on it.
I have cut you slack personally (this has nothing to do with my role as moderator), because you have been such a outstanding supporter of the program over the years and I thought you were just letting off some steam beacuse of the long season. However I am here to tell you that you are letting your relationships with certain people cloud your judgement, in my opinion, and you really should rejoin the Jackrabbit nation.
Come back to the fold, things are not near as bad as you think and really, you wouldn't look good wearing green and gold.
Go State! ;D
P.S. Speaking to the topic at hand, I support Coach Nagy 100% and would be very disappointed if anything was to happen to his status as our coach.
I hopped on this morning to see some excited Jacks fans talking about the sweep of the Bison and the very much needed win for the men and THIS IS THE FIRST THREAD THAT I SEE!
I FEEL LIKE THROWING UP!
The idea that Nagy and/or his staff should be let go is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard!
My thoughts:
1. Nobody said this transition was going to be an easy thing.
2. There is nothing the coach can do about injuries (does anybody remember the 28 points Holdren put up on Illinois? Illi-fricking-nois!!!)
3. We've landed some great recruits under the current staff. Cadwell, Beran, and Holdren are pretty solid in my book. See #2!
4. The coaches also can't be with the kids 24/7. Isn't it lovely that those two men are guilty until proven innocent in a forum like this!
5. If you run coach Nagy out of here, what quality coach in their right mind would want to come to a university that just chased a coach that put in 11 years and the only reason his team is struggling is the transition to D1????? (See Nebraska football) Is there actually someone out there that wants Thorson back?
6. HATS OFF TO THE FANS THAT ARE STICKING WITH THE JACKS THROUGH THICK AND THIN!!!!!

I said I would not apologize for my comments and I stand fast to what I have said. The basketball program has problems and they did not start with the allegation of sexual assult. They were there before. This current mess only compounds the situation IMO. Good day.

SDSUFAN,
I'm not asking for an apology, I am asking you to think about your position becasue it is wrong. If you don't think so that is ok, it is your opinion, but if that is the case you may be needing this link:

I disagree vehemently with what SDSUFAN has been saying on this thread but I don't think that throwing him overboard for it is any better than ostracizing any other long-time Jackrabbit fan. It is, if you will, out of line.
Time will tell who's right and who's mistaken. Everyone who's posted, as far as I can tell, wants what is best for SDSU.
I can't believe this thread was even started. You don't get rid of coaches the calber of Nagy...
Or coaches the caliber of Quin Snyder (Final Four, off court issues with players), Mike Davis (Final Four, inability to recruit-key player injury), and Eddie Sutton (795 wins, multiple issues). Go to Kentucky's fan boards, they are talking about getting rid of Tubby. There is some serious discontent at Louisville with Pitino, too.
With Division I basketball comes Division I speculation, but that is all it is, speculation. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

I'm not a big fan of cleaning house on short notice.
I'd like to see Nagy here another 2+ years befor talking of firing. The same for Larson, unless the staff sees it differently.
I also don't have a problem with Larson doing most of the recruiting work. I don't like to see the head coach do everything.
This season seems to be ending on a higher note and winning the Bison game was "the" game this year and it showed. Based on the adversity of the last few years, I think everyone should lighten up and focus on the success of the Women's team who deserve more time from everyone here, but I know how that goes.
All that said, I still think the years with Volmer, Walker, Fischer, Estling, Norberg underachieved many of time and sometimes didn't play as a team either. I still think this is a flaw of Nagy, however no one is perfect and no one complained when the team was 15 - 0 or so and guess who they got beat by first that year? (at NDSU)
Everyone that's a bit fired up, take this year to focus on the more important things in life while the record is down. Keep being a fan, but take it for what it is: a spectator sport.
let's just close up this topic...Nagy's still gonna be here next year...Jamie and Scott love Brookings and have raised their family here...Scott's not getting the boot unless he decides to leave on his own terms...by the way the pizza he brought us students was pretty tasty...True there are other coaches out there but Scott's doing the best against teams like Kentucky and Illinois...If you remember you had those coaches compliment Scott on his coaching...So lets shut up already...I'll leave you with one thought...You don't get rid of your leader right away when in the middle of a battle or transition period...

I think this is the best idea posted in these four pages. Near as I can tell there are only 1 or 2 people even suggesting this. Lets let them be and let this thread die and fall to the bottom.

I guess the guy in the blue hat is our new leader. I am 100 per cent Norwegian-American, but I dont think I am a lemming. Do a couple of googles if you have no idea what a lemming is.

The assistant coach's role at SDSU among other duties is to to be in charge of all the leg work in recruiting.
This is not a new role that started with Troy Larson. It goes back for decades probably. This is why I brought up the suggestion to bring back Morganthaler.
Morganthaler did a great job in doing the his role as assistant. Notice that MSU-Mankato has not had problems recruiting plus they picked up a D1 transfer from one of the Montana schools, plus the D1 from last year. I did not follow them that close the last two years, but they had a great player, who was also a D1 transfer. Was Staten the name?
Basically, I questioning the recruiting methods and efforts. Thats what is the burr in my side. Last year, it was painful and this year its more painful, and next year... I do not know what is going to happen. I guess I am more skeptical than angry or inpatient. I just dont feel we are at the place we should be at the end of year 2. We always so many explanations and dare I say excuses? I am tired of hearing them.

Do you honestly think Matt will just come back to SDSU if we offer. He obviously had aspirations to be a head coach or he wouldn't have left for Mankato in the first place. I may be wrong, but i really doubt he would leave a successful program as a head coach to come back as an assistant in Brookings. Maybe so, but i doubt it.
