  • Is Nagy gone?

I have seen a few posts that hint towards Nagy possibly losing his job after this year, both on here and on Bisonville.

If he is done at the end of the year, I will be sick to my stomach. Look at what he did before the transition - He needs more than 2 years to judge him on the D1 level.

    What do you guys think?

    Re: Is Nagy gone?

I am not the biggest Fred Oien fan in the world but even I don't think he'd consider firing Nagy.

It's way too early and there are too many bright spots.

If people are leaning on the player conduct thing, I can't imagine a coach being fired by our athletic director for one major incident. It would be waaaaay to hypocritical. Even for Fred.

Nagy isn't gone unless he resign. I was at the arena before the game placing my sign and was talking to a couple of the office guys and they said Nagy's safe for now.

None of us will figure into Coach Nagy's future. Doesn't mean we can't discuss the issue.

I would not be in favor of finding a new coach at this time. More specifically, Coach Nagy has my full support. I think letting Nagy get away now would be a mistake much less firing the guy.

Coach Nagy also has my full support. I know he's the one who will lead us back to being a dominant program. I think people are questioning our recruiting, more specifically, Troy Larson. I'm not close enough to the program to have an opinion on that issue.

            Re: Is Nagy gone?

Since we are questioning recruiting and specifically Troy Larson someone tell me where we have gone wrong lately. I am not a huge basketball guy and don't claim to know a lot about the game but here is what I think I know.

It seems to me that at times people have hinted that the current group of Redshirts is a bust (Cadwell, now Holdren and Andre) WHY? That's quite a label for this group. If Andre ever plays here again these three would be a pretty awesome graduating class in 3 years.
Even without Andre the two left are obviously great ballplayers.

The current class of redshirts seems to be being questioned already. Why? They haven't seen the floor yet and people are wondering if they are going to be good enough to play. Let's not put the cart before the horse.

I believe anything done before that doesn't count. We were DII and had to recruit as such. Sure Andy K hasn't lived up to what we had hoped but I don't think there are too many that would argue that Beran can obviously play at this level. Loney has been a nice player but a little slow for this level maybe. Frias was a piece placed out of need to fill a hole but has started to come around a bit lately and, I think, shown signs of being to compete at this level.

I am going to finish here because I would like to hear specifics on why we are questioning Troy's recruiting. Again, I just don't see enough evidence to convict just yet.

It's been mentioned by SDSUFAN regarding the coaching staff, who we've recruited, etc. Maybe he will explain his reasons. As far as I'm concerned, I think the guys playing this year (Cadwell, Gilbert, Holdren) make up a pretty good class. We'll have to wait and see about next years guys, but I think I'll like them.

                Re: Is Nagy gone?

As much as I have respected Coach Nagy in the past, I do in my own humble opinion feel that the current investigation carries consequences. Lets  suggest the worst case scenerio.  There is an indictment, a trial, and conviction of the two players under investigation. Who is responsible for these people being on campus and who is responsible for their behaviour on and off the court?  These consequences could eat up a great deal of goodwill put together in the 200 something victories etc.

On the other hand lets assume a no indictment, the players are cleared. Under that scenerio the coach continues and those players would be free to continue educations and eligibilty in varsity sports.

Just judging by how our adminstration had operated in the past, I think student athletes have pushed the envolpe as far as off court behaviour and how it affects the image as preceived by the rest of the state of SD. If my gut feeling is correct here some staffing changes could very likely result.

No matter how  the investigation comes out, I would expect some fallout which could include cleaning house.
I am speaking purely from gut feelings here so please do not remind me that the student athletes in question have only been acccused.

Also, as I chuckled to myself about Superunderwear guy that peddled in at half time, I think he too may be on thin ice as student conduct rules can be very cruel sometimes. ;D

I have seen the Bison play about three times this year besides listening on the radio. My own feeling is that NDSU is our measuring stick, more so than any other D1 school. Despite winning last night, it was emotion that carried SDSU, certainly not talent and maybe team work made the difference for this one game, but other games we have not played as  a team.  '

The one thing that has stood out about NDSU, is that maybe some of their red shirt freshman other than Woodside and Moorman are not outstanding and real flashy, but they do know how to play as a unit, they pass, they assist, they play a tight defense, they know were their other four teammate are all the time. This is what is missing with the current Jacks. The Bison,  too have had an season ending injury in a player Lunde. We have to wait to see how he will add to their equation.  Plus they got four guys on the red shirts. I wished SDSU program was at the same level. Right now despite last nights win, we are about a year and a half behind. Troy Larsen has done all the recruiting leg work by the way.

Other than Holdren, we have had no one come to campus ready to play D1 ball. We have guys that need a year of red shirt, and then the following year we dont know if they are going to cut the mustard or not. This tells me we have settled for the best choices. I  do question the recruiting networks used and have we used all the contacts available? If we had we used all those contacts, we would not be in the mess we are in now. I wonder if we are even close in getting the best out of the state of Iowa.

BTW only Cadwell is now playing of the three you mentioned. I think he is a very good player, but holding in a red shirt status last year was a big mistake.

I am not make all these choices and decisions, but the people who are very accountable for their actions. I still get my gov annuity and SS check so I dont have to worry about these decisions, but by gosh I feel like these decisions should be questioned and 226 wins do not warrant a free pass.

                    Re: Is Nagy gone?

Here, here, as I read the board somewhere there are posts/comments about how the Jacks are now playing like a team -NDSU thread - this is what we have been used to and what most seem to like and enjoy. At the beginning of this season the Jacks looked like a playground team, lots of one-on-one, many turnovers, and a lot of standing around. I am not sure if Andre Gilbert is a help or a hinderence, also, I might add Holdren to the playground idea, but really have not seen him enough to tell yet. Everyone has gotten excited about Chris Wagner, it is not only his size, but his bulk, the two tall red-shirts need to put on a ton - not pun intended - of weight to compete. Cam H. is a question mark coming from Canada and having played with a shot clock and extra minutes per quarter in the high schools in Canada. I agree with SDSUFAN with the need to improve, and upgrade our recruiting. We need to get some good quality players as we had in the past. Coach Nagy himself as stated that we have had teams in the past that would compete better. Where are the Meisters, Eslings, Jason S. Jermaine Rivers, Chris White etc. We need that kind of player and citizen.

One would think after winning the game last night we could see an end to the negative comments for at least one day, but I guess not. :-/

Or the Norbergs. I think i saw Sempsrott siting front row of reserved last night. I've seen Fischer and Johnson in the same spot recently. oh the days of Norberg, Estling, Vollmer, Sempsrott, Fischer and that Elite 8 team. I was a wee lil Jackrabbit back then.

A close win was nice, but that does not end our problems. Our program is a mess and its time to wake up and smell the coffee.

This is the 2nd year of transition. Did you guys honestly expect a 15-20 win season?
