You seem very knowledgeable about high school players. You posted this about Tate over on the Argus board:

Has been offered by Augie and USD. He has received calls from some smaller D1 schools including Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, UNC Wilmington, Richmond, NDSU and Samford. While Washington State did call to inquire no serious recruitment from that level has taken place. If no D1 offers come Tate's way prior to the early signing period he could generate some interest from that level if he were to sign late. It is doubtful that he'll receive any offers higher than a small to mid major D1 school.

Pesicka is a scoring machine and one that got away from SDSU. I'll just say that we all make mistakes. This can't happen in the future with SD athletes of this caliber.

What exactly do you mean? Do you think that Pesicka should have received one of our scholarships and if so who shouldn't have gotten one Cordova or Bassett. Just curious about your take.

There are four talented basketball players in the Class of 2006 that are heading to the DII level and higher.  The four are:

Tate Pesicka
Anthony Cordova
Michael Tveidt
Zach Finley

Anthony could be a junior, due to his age and would be a mid to higher major recruit if he were a junior.  He has benefited immensely by moving from California to SD.  His old HS team use to play in front of crowds of about 50 to 100 people and now he plays in front of 2,000 + most nights.  When he arrived in SD he had a ton of potential but lacked desire and the ability to compete.  Two HS seasons later and a summer season under his belt and he's developing into an outstanding player.  Krabbenhoft didn't overshadow him too much but it did require that Cordova stay primarily in the post.  With Joe moving on to college Anthony is able to move outside a bit more and develop his perimeter game.  He's always been a post player but could develop into a four and maybe a three down the road.  Ball handling isn't a strong suit but who’s to say he can't get better.  I'm curious if he'll redshirt or play right away.  Grades were a concern and he'll need to continue to focus on them to be ready to go by fall.  He's worked hard in the classroom and the eligibility issues, once reported on this site, are not as big a concern as once reported.

Michael Tveidt gets a ton of mention and is anointed the "Top basketball" player in the senior class tag.  However, Cordova and Finley are both late bloomers and will have major impacts on the SD HS scene this season.  

Finley played outstanding last weekend at the LNI and will do well at Princeton.  He's by far the best big man in the state as it's no contest in that category.

Couple of responses to your comments above: How can you say Krabenhoft didn't overshadow Cordova when Krabenhoft was the most recruited basketball player in the state since Mike Miller. The offense was built around him and Cordova had to get his looks when he could. I'm not ready to annoit Zach Finely as the best big man in the state based on the level of competition he is going up against which certainly isn't his fault. Too state that Pesicka is one that got away and State made a mistake in not signing him is ridiculous. There is a reason he signed at USD and that is because that is the level he is best suited. If SDSU made a mistake than I guess every other DI school in the country made one too. I would have thought he would have bulked up a bit to make a run at a DI scholarship. We had two scholarships available and got two wonderful players in Bassett and Cordova who fit needs in our program.

Ok, whoa too many questions at once:

1.  Tate was offered by SDSU in August heading into his Junior year.  The offer was on the table until March of 05.  SDSU pulled back the offer to sign a JUCO guard and that hasn't worked out too well.  Had Tate committed he would be in a SDSU uniform next fall and most likely Michael Tveidt would have choosen SDSU as well.  Anthony Cordova would have been the odd man out or at the very least unsigned right now.  The bad thing with the Pesicka pull back on the offer is that they didn't give him any heads up that they were pulling back.  One final chance to accept would have been a good jesture on their part but it understandable that needs change.  Cordova and Bassett didn't figure into the offer pull back.  

2.)  Not a challenge but who is a better post player in SD than Zach Finley?  The kid is heading to the Ivy League and is solid.  He performed well this summer against some talented athletes.  If someone in the senior class or junior class is better then Finley, please speak up.  

3.)  If you felt that the RHS offense was built around JK last year I must have been watching a different team.  Usually teams run specials or set screens for players who they run their offense around ala SF O'Gorman and Mitch Begeman.  JK had more screens set for him during UW's first practice then he received all of last year.

4.) Krabbenhoft was the 2nd most highly recruited athlete since Mike Miller. Jared Reiner was recruited by more schools and more offers from High Major DI's. Krabbenhoft had verbally commited in February of his Junior year so recruitment had nothing to do with him "overshadowing" AC. Recruitment isn't even a factor. Saying that JK had the offense run around him is a valid observation in the "overshadowing" arguement but recruitment is not.

Had Tate committed he would be in a SDSU uniform next fall and most likely Michael Tveidt would have choosen SDSU as well.    

Why?  Is there a special connection between Tate and Michael?  If so, how did Tate's signing with USD effect Tveidt and his decision to follow his brother to NDSU?  Finally, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought you posted over on the Argus board that you thought Tate's body type/size would be a liability for his chances of landing a D-I offer.

Michaels brother wasn't even a factor in the NDSU decision as he'll be long gone by the time Michael gets to NDSU.  

Michael and Tate are good friends and I'm sure a discussion of the possibility of playing in college together occured.  SDSU was the only DI school that offered that option as both had offers from SDSU.

1) If Pesicka had an open offer from the Jacks for seven months and he didn't take the bait and than ends up at a DII institution than who made than the mistake? Bassett verballed to the Jacks in Sept 04 and so was thus in the pocket while Pesicka was still milling his offers. I think Pesicka overestimated his opportunities and abilities and I'm sure ended up falling short of his goals of playing DI basketball. He may end up being the style of player we lack ie. long range shooting, but I will take the athletic Matt Cadwell who was considered the best all-around athlete in the Twin Cities his senior year. I think Bassett will be a similiar player to Holdren a quick athletic (3) player who can get to the hoop and finish.

2) Finley is probably the best post player in the state. I just question what kind of competition he is getting playing for Rapid City More. What is the tallest player he encountered at the LNI. I saw Finley play for the Schoolers and he is a nice looking player and would certainly have loved to see him playing for the Jacks. I also saw Cordova battle Gophers Recruit Bryce Webster at 6'9 250 and give him all he wanted defensively in a Roosevelt win over St Thomas Academy in last years Timberwolves shootout. I like what Cordova is doing thus far in his senior year against superior competition. I would take the smaller Cordova over Finley. I can't imagine how much fun it would be for a big man to play at Princeton if they still play that slow down passing game. I imagine a good job awaits Zach upon graduation from Princeton.

3) The few times I saw Roosevelt play the game seemed to totally revolve around Krabenhoft. He seemed to play all five postions and there was a lot of standing around watching him perform. Krabenhoft was not a selfish player, but the plays certainly revolved around him handling the ball which if I was Coach Wilber I would do the same thing with a player of his calibre. My point of Cordova being overshadowed was more from a team perspective rather than recruiting. I would suspect the attention to Krabenhoft brought some exposure to Cordova.

I think Cadsev has already answered your last question. Tate did not have any offers from D-1 schools expect state because of his size (which as a Yote fan I heard before, but did not have any confirmation, if this so qualifies) Also, a call from NDSU and an offer are miles apart. That being said, I think state will end up with the best player of the class when it is all said and done in Cordova. I have only watched Finley play one game and that was in the State A against Miller, but if Princeton offered him he must be aight.

Calling, writing or emailing an athlete is great but offers are different. NDSU never offered Tate and it never came up in the process at all. At the time SDSU was the only school to offer both Pesicka and Tveidt.

6'1" shooting guards are a dime a dozen. Every state has one, two, twenty (depending on the size of the state). Pesicka arguably is the best the 06 class to offer at shooting the ball and has the athletic ability to go with it plus tremendous speed. Size isn't that much a factor with him and bulk certainly wouldn't matter too much. If I indicated that somewhere else I appologize but it most likely was in reference to playing at a higher level than SDSU. Only one guard from SD has gone DI outside of SD in the past 10 years........Matt Martin. Kids need to realize that and take advantage of opportunities when offered if they indeed want to play DI.

Pesicka will have an outstanding career at USD and not look back nor regret not playing DI.

With the biggest decision of his life behind him, Michael Tveidt can relax and enjoy the golden days of his senior year.

A fierce recruitment campaign for the college services of the 6-foot-6 Riggs High School standout ended Wednesday with North Dakota State in Fargo the winner. Tveidt signed a letter of intent to play for the Bison at a ceremony at Riggs Gym attended by family, teammates, coaches and teachers.  .  .  .

When Tveidt began to whittle his choices down, one of the criteria was the impression he got from coaches and potential teammates. But Division I programs have the wooing process down to a science.

“Every single coach and every player I met I go along with,” said Tveidt. “So, that wasn’t going to help make my decision.”

Three other schools, besides NDSU, make the final four. They include the University of Richmond, the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. All four had strong business schools, where Tveidt plains to study either business management or accounting. The tipping point in favor of the Bison was family.

“I have a brother and cousin that attend there, which is nice,” said Tveidt. “Plus, Fargo is only five hours away (from Pierre). My family and friends can come and watch me more. When it came down to it, I went with my gut.” .  .  .

I'm not sure Pesicka is 145lbs soaking wet. I wonder if he had showed some more commitment to the weight room if he might have had more options? Schools more apt to take a chance on a guy 6'10 and 200 lbs ie.Engren,Bilitz and bulk them up than a smaller guy. I think Pesicka and Begeman will have productive careers at USD. I just don't think we would look back and say wow those two got away.

Exactly, the other schools are miles away from home. The recruiting process for MT was more than frustrating. UWM was the next choice for MT, however he was put off by the staff. He would have gone to State if they had an offer still on the table for him. They did not, and no fault to State they shouldn't have to wait around, and so he went to the closest D-1 school that offered him a scholarship. It will work out in the end for both sides.

I am not here to run any ahtlete down or call their choice a mistake.  I said congrats to the USD fans on the Argus board when they landed Tate, as I think he will be a great fit.  I also think the Bison got a heck of a player when they signed Michael.   I guess my point is that I don't think SDSU passing on Tate was a mistake.

It really doesn't appear that by signing Tate that Michael was a lock for State as there is no evidence that I have seen that indicates that they were some sort of package deal.  joeybrownerhof you seem to indicate that had SDSU had a scholarship left that we could have landed  Michael (I don't know if that is true and we will never know for sure because SDSU did not have a scholarship availible when Michael made his decision) but, if true we really didn't need to sign Tate to get Michael anyway.  

Although I would have been nice to see Michael in Yellow and Blue,  I like Cordova and Bassett.  I agree with joeybrownerhof that it will all work out in the end and I will put my trust in Coach Nagy and his staff everytime.

Now that this has come up, I'm kind of curious why Nagy hasn't signed many gaurds. Right now we pretty much have Cadwell, Hornby and Gilber, if he plays as the shooting guard next year. It seems like we keep signing fowards though. I guess for the next recruiting class we'll probably have some guards coming in though. In my opinion the 2007 recruiting class will be critical to the future of the program, as we'll be losing Beran, Mohamed, Frias, Kleinjan, and Loney.

I'm also curious Cadsev, if you were a coach who would you have signed for next year, assuming you had your choice, Tviedt, or Cordova. I don't really know how people can choose between the two.
