  • KSFY story on Mackenzie Casey

KSFY is just about to run a story on Mackenzie and how much of an inspiration he is to kids back home on Pine Ridge

Nice story. He talked about looking past the pressures of the reservation and friends because of the goals he had set for himself to play college basketball. He also said he would like to go back to the reservation and coach and teach and make a difference for some other kids.

I wish I could've seen it! Any chance it will be online?

This is one of those stories that ought to make everyone who reads this board really stop and consider what athletics is all about. Yeah, you want to win. Everyone wants to be number one. Well, most of us are number two, or three, or four ...

Are we making difference? I guess Mr. Casey can answer, "yes."

I would bet it is run again at 10. Then it might be available on-line after that.

Another great story about another quality young student athlete from SDSU. Thanks Mac and best of luck to you and your team the balance of the season.

Most certainly the best of luck to you and your family in the future. The kids back home will certainly benefit from your dream.

That is a great story, it is not just basketball, it's life skills , and so much more.

It look like he is not into media much and seem a little nervous on camera. His heart is there though and I think those at SDSU who have gotten near him have found that out.

Best of luck to Mr. Casey and may he continue to be a role model to everyone.

Re: KSFY story on Mackenzie Casey

Without going into too much detail, I'm sure Casey has seen as much as Warkenthien among his family, if not his parents. Life on the res is hard, period, but it's especially hard on the Pine Ridge.

My favorite Mackenize Casey moment (on the court) was at the ORU game in December.

ORU had pretty much salted the game away (c. 15 pt lead with a few minutes to go) and their point guard was showing up Casey with some fancy dribbling.

Casey reached out and just slapped the ball out of his hands, and while the ORU guy managed to chase the ball down before it went out of bounds he was a totally different person when he brought the ball back to reset, and Casey had this grin on his face that you could see from one end of the court to another.

Casey actually had a pretty good game against ORU, but that was one of those games where the Jacks kind of decided that the best way to get back into a game was by playing above their skills.....

No question about that. The current South Dakota Magazine has a story about the Gann Valley basketball team in the mid 1950's. Through the one outstanding and talented player, we see what peer pressure does to those who want to excell like McKenzie. Its a sad story. I provided a short synopsis in the Around South Dakota area of this board. I don't believe anyone commented on my post, but was hoping they would. I would suggest those that are curious will pick up a copy and read the entire article. I dont believe there is an online link.

I trying to think who was the last Native American to be on the roster at SDSU, and I believe it was Roger Campbell from Rosebud when Jim Thorson was coach. Its been a while.

Did the Ashleys go to SDSU? Did they play ball while they were there?
