For what it's worth Oakland fans do not want to play the Jacks in the first round

I honestly don't know who I'd like to play in first round. Best case I suppose is 4 or 5 seed against IUPUI to avoid Oakland, ORU, and NDSU. I'm sure tourney organizors would like that too because it could set up a monday night game between NDSU and SDSU and a big crowd.

A five-game winning streak starting Thursday would change everything. A three-game losing streak would be a disappointment, but not unexpected given the way the season has gone so far.
But the point is the former is a possibility, however remote. A year ago it would not have been within the realm of possibility. So to me, that's progress.

What's success from this point on? Interesting question.

          Success right now IMHO is:

One road win to finish out the season (most likely at Centenary) and get that monkey off the team's back.

One or more wins in the conference tournament, to finally break the league perception of SDSU as a doormat.

Wildest dreams: Somehow manufacture a win at ORU as well as Centenary, roll into the tournament with some confidence (at last!) and steal the darn thing away from NDSU, to go into the Big Dance and get clobbered by Pitt or UConn or Oklahoma or whoever. (And, if we're *lucky*, play in and win the Dayton play-in game, which I believe would count as a tournament win for purposes of getting the Summit League an extra share of the income!)

Biggest nightmare: Absolutely lay an egg in Tulsa, get beat by Centenary, and come out flat and uncompetitive in Sioux Falls and get run out of the building.

It seems to me we have more talent and less desire and toughness than past teams.

Bear in mind that those teams inherited a winning tradition. Go look at the SDSU record book from the 80s & 90s at SDSU:

              http://www.gojacks.com/ViewArticle.d...43&SPSID=88450

9 losing seasons in their final 43 years at D-2. And only 2 in their final 20.

It's easier to win when you inherit a tradition of winning. We will look back on these classes as those who started the winning tradition at D-1.

I'd like to know how you can tell that the men on this team aren't tough or don't have the desire to win. I think this is the biggest problem carrying over from the D2 days.

and to Doc - my point was that if you said at the beginning of the season that this team would be competing on the road much better than last year, would have a winning conference home record and would have an outside chance at finishing as high as 4th in the conference we would all be ecstatic. But with the flashes we have seen there is disappointment in the current situation. My feeling is that this is a good thing. Maybe its looking through yellow and blue shades but things are moving in the right direction.

I think the fact that they struggle so much on the road proves this. It takes a lot of toughness and desire to win on the road, especially in conference play. You can't be afraid to "hit someone in the mouth" and let them know the they are there to play. I think when that happens they may just go on a little run.

Sometimes I think our team plays a little too nice. We need someone like Andy Moeller who is going to get into an opponents face from time to time.

Dare I say it, but maybe someone like Mueller? RabbitObserver will love this one...LOL.

I really think we need one piece.....a firecracker.

                        Re: road losses

It's not a question of toughness, so much, as it is a tendency to tighten up when they have a lead. Consider how many of those road losses came from last minute comebacks....

I would rather go 0-30 for a season than have a guy like Mueller play for the Jacks.

A guy like Mueller? Someone that worked his ass off on both ends of the floor and made everyone around him better? You're right. Why would anyone want a basketball player like that?

I wasn't a big fan of him because of the way he acted, but he was a hell of a basketball player and he did make everyone around him better. He also was a guy who didn't back down EVER. Something our currect team seems to do at times, especially on the road.

I was at the State A tourney his senior year, what he did was simply unbelievable. Sure he was cocky and arrogant, but the kid could play basketball you have to admit that.

Any SDSU fan saying we need a guy like Mueller is walking a fine line, but I tend to agree. Had he not been wearing Red we wouldn't hate they guy so much. He was a great teammate, no doubt about that. Its always the opposition that hated him, not the guys in the same color shirts.
