  • Nagy Sioux Empire Staters Luncheon Comments

Coach Nagy spoke at the Sioux Empire Staters luncheon earlier today. It was nice to hear him talk about the program and how things are progressing. Following from my recollection are some of coach's points.

    - It has been a struggle but coach is confident that this group of players will get things turned around and he believes that they will turn things around yet this season.

    - All of the players in the locker room know what the standards are for this basketball program and they badly want to restore the program to that level. They are putting pressure on themselves to do so, and in some cases this pressure is resulting in some of the poor performances.

    - Griffin Callahan will make an impact immediately, but he is not the answer to our problems. He is the best shooter on the team and he is extremely hard nosed and tough. As a 6'3" player he could play anywhere from the 2-4 spots. Despite his size he is tough enough and competitive enough to guard the other teams 4 player "and he will try to kill him".

    - Recruiting is going much better. 2-3 years ago there were a lot of players that wouldn't even speak to SDSU because of the transitional process. This is no longer the case.

    - Although Anthony Davis is hurt and may or may not ever play basketball again, he is a great big man who would have held down the middle for the Jacks immediately. He said that it was a coup that we got him to come to SDSU in the first place. They will have to make the best decision they can on his future and his scholarship sometime this year.

That is what I can remember from the conversation today. If something more comes to mind I'll come back and post more.

Another note: Nagy spoke about his Samaritan's Feet efforts, and members of the SES had worked connections at Scheel's and Stride Right and they presented a donation of 150 pairs of shoes to the cause at the luncheon today. Nice. When you head up to Brookings for a game take the time to purchase a pair of new shoes size 3-9 and drop off in the collection bins as you enter Frost Arena.

I was there also. It was very nice to hear coach speack and show the positive vibe that is coming from the team. Just having a hard time dealing with the pressure to get back to winning. AJ was not able to make it because practice got rescheduled for the noon hour but will be there next month. I really like what Nagy said about Griffian and every thing in general. He thinks very highly of of the samaritain project collecting shoes. when my parents were out xmas shopping they bought a few pairs to bring to the luncheon. Like he said if every body brings 1 pair to a game they could collect thousands of pairs at a time. Its such a small effort for us too do but is so worthwhile to invest in collecting shoes. He talked about maybe putting some collection boxes in SF so people here could donate new shoes in SF with out having to go to brookings.

He also mentioned players looking at the "blogs" and telling them to "stay off those things"...I agree, sometimes I wish I could too...especially the last few days.

      Go Jacks!!

Me too. Probably different reasons though. I sure hope my grades don't suffer because I spend so much time on here! Chances are they probably did.

          Those who can, play.

          Those who can't, coach.

Those who can't do either, spend way too much time on Internet boards discussing the previous two groups.

            Griffan Callahan:

May not make the difference, but if the question is one of team chemistry and team mindset on the court--inside the lines, adding a new player might be enough to get this team over the hump.

Unlike some, I believe this team has the talent to win at the D-1 level. They aren't a top 100 program, but they've got enough talent to win. What's missing is something that you can't coach--and a change in on court personnel might help fill in the missing pieces.

Griffan doesn't need to be the best player on the team. One of our biggest problems right now is having quality depth. If he can truly play the 2-4 as Nagy said this afternoon, and plays tough & hard-nosed ball, I think he should be a great addition and will definitely help. Being able to give Garrett, Clint, and Kai breaks during the game and still have a quality guard on the court who can shoot will be nice.

I am sure it has been posted here, but what type of shoes are the looking for? I read sizes 3-9, but what types, athletic, work, dress? Maybe what ever you decide. I have been meaning to buy some shoes and need to get this done. How long are they planning on taking the collection? Can I send them money or a gift card?

I don't think the people they're collecting for are in a particular position to be picky about their shoes. Something comfortable and versatile, I guess.

I think anything would be fine, casual or street or athletic. I beleive it will be going for sometime. They will gladly take a check or money if you send them some.

I feel your pain. I've been dealing with SDSUfans.com and an engineering program (undergrad and now grad) for a while now. Talk about forced time management. Actually as I write this I really should be studying for a final tomorrow that I haven't studied for yet.

Hopefully, at the Master's level, your grade won't be highly influenced by the final because you have done such a stellar participation to date.

That would be part of the reason I haven't studied for it yet.

HA! I know what you are going through. My issue is that my whole grade is based on my final and thats it. That is why this board is not good for my education.

                              Well then.

                              Go away.

                              Get good grades.

Get out, make a whole lot of money.

Get a stadium or arena at SDSU named after you.

Come back to the board and gloat lustily.

See how easy it can be (if only you stay focused, that is . . . )
