No offense MD, but I was looking for an opinion from someone who knows a little more about this kid.  I would guess you and I know about the same from his website.  MJA, does Wilbur have an opinion??  I do look for this kid to step in and fill a forward slot.  He's way too small to play the 4 but it would seem like he's a good fit for the 3 spot.  Man, we have a lot of guards.

No offense taken. When I last spoke to some members of the staff they were pretty confident Kia would sign here and seemed prepared to insert him in the line-up as a Freshman. Not sure if that will be in a 3 guard type offense with Cadwell, Hornby and Williams or as a guard coming of the bench. Now, a lot will depend on how he performs in "camp" this summer and fall. What he has done up north and overseas seems to show promise as a 3 who can get to the hoop and hit the outside shot. Again, strength will be the biggest issue as it was with Gilbert. I hope Williams has a better head on his shoulders than Andre.

Did they start slipping grumpy-pills into the water supply some time in the last couple of weeks? Maybe it's just the posts I'm reading but there seems to be an edge to a lot of postings.

I agree that JackMD's quip at Andre could easily have been left unsaid, but let's try to maintain some good humor. It's spring, after all . . . and I mean, how bad can it be? Most of you aren't living in Kansas City and don't have a bunch of tickets to Royals games the remainder of the year, like (cough, cough) some folks have. You think you have it tough!

If you have season tickets to the Royals, doesn't that give you the option of suiting up for a home series and playing the position of your choice?

Yes, but unfortunately the Royals have already filled all this year's available slots with guys that look like they have the baseball skills of the average fan.

No cheap shot at Andre intended.  I think he made bad decisions on the court.  I've said that in the previous post and I have stated that before.  Just as others have disagreed with the signing of certain recruits I have to.  Andre is a metro area kid who I was told was not a quality DI basketball player.  We took a chance on him and it seems it was a bust.

Sorry to offend.  I do appreciate your willingness to defend Andre and want you to know that I take no side when it comes to the off-court issues with any of the players for SDSU.  The courts will handle that.  I support Nagy and the program fundamentally and financially and I am understandbly disturbed by the recent events.  

Perhaps, given the sensitive personal issues facing Andre I should have used a more descriptive and less general phrase than "head on is shoulders".  I think Andre was lacking in court savy.  Not to say he couldn't and wouldn't have developed some.  I have just been lead to understand that William's has more awareness of the game around him.

It might have been mentioned earlier but I think with the direction this board has taken to attacking recruiting over the last few years. Coach Larson needs to get the credit for this recruit.

If he is going to take blame for the current situation, let's be sure to give credit for a good get.

HUGE get for Nagy, Larson and the rest of the staff. I have and will continue to support each and every member of the current SDSU family. What might be harder for me is another year of patience while these young players develop. Through the struggles they will get better and we need to reap the benefits by keeping them with us at SDSU.

I posed the question on the comparison between Gilbert and Williams. Both relatively similar in jumping ability and quickness, but Williams is a much better shooter. One of the games Matt watched, Williams had 40+ points and about half of those were from behind the arc.

Let's take the long view--the important season is 2008-09, that's when we become tournament-eligible. Everything is basically "pre-season" until we get to 2008-09.

If Nagy and the troops can get things back on an even keel in 2006-07 and then make some more progress in 2007-08, we can still be in good shape for 2008-09. (Of course we're probably going to need to win 25+ games that year (or be in & win a conference) to have even a shot at the NCAA Tournament, but "that's why you play the games.&quot

2006-07: Return to Jackrabbit Basketball (superior intensity, consistent effort, solid defense (improve the perimeter defense!!!), inside/outside balance).
2007-08: Add another recruiting year of athletic ability and depth to the above. Use the improved depth to speed up the game a little bit when advantageous.
2008-09: Make a run at the NCAA's.

True it is pre-season like. However, recruiting is tough when things are going like they have the last couple of years. We need a solid nucleus to remain in place the next couple of years to strengthen our appeal to potential recruits in the future.

South Dakota State men's basketball coach Scott Nagy is turning to Canada once again to improve his team.

Kai Williams, a forward from Regina, Saskatchewan, signed a letter of intent Wednesday to join the Jackrabbits this fall.

"I really liked the coaches and the players, and I liked that it's close to home and I'll get a chance to play right away," said Williams, who was named the top forward and second-best prospect at the 2005 Nike All-Canada summer camp.

Williams is the second Canadian player that SDSU has landed in the past two years. Guard Cam Hornby, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, redshirted as a freshman this season.

A 6-foot-6, 175-pound wing player, Williams scored a game-high 20 points in the Adidas All-Canadian Game in early April, then averaged 5.5 points and five rebounds for Canada's junior national team in the Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Manheim, Germany.

"Playing for Team Canada this past month in Germany was great," he said. "It's definitely an experience I wouldn't change for anything. It's one of the biggest highlights of my basketball career so far."

Williams, who attends Campbell Collegiate in Regina, will also play for Canada in the FIBA under-19 World Championship Qualifier in San Antonio from June 28 to July 2 in San Antonio. He chose SDSU over Eastern Kentucky and the University of Regina in Canada.

Canadian standout signs with Jacks

Canadian Junior National Team member Kai Williams has signed a national letter of intent, indicating he will enroll at South Dakota State University in the fall and compete for the Jackrabbit men's basketball team.

Williams, a 6-foot-6 forward, averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots per game this season for Campbell Collegiate high school in Regina, Saskatchewan. He led Campbell Collegiate to the Saskatchewan Provinical Championship, scoring 33 points in the championship game.

He also led all players with 20 points in the Adidas All-Canadian Game.

A member of Team Saskatchewan, Williams was one of 54 players from Canada invited to the Nike Camp in the summer of 2005. Canada-based Hooplife selected Williams as the top forward and second-best player at the Nike Camp. . . . (read more)
