Sargeant has been good and very consistent in the few games so far this year. With Kai coming on now and Callahan playing great, this creates a solid top 3 scorers for this team. Nice.

      Terry's write-up of the game:
      Jacks edge Central Arkansas
      Terry Vandrovec • December 1, 2008

CANCUN, Mexico - It was no day at the beach, but the South Dakota State men found a way to close out a game in the finale of the Cancun Challenge.

Less than 24 hours after squandering an 11-point lead, the Jackrabbits beat Central Arkansas 72-67 on Sunday at the Moon Palace Resort despite giving up chunks of points with what coach Scott Nagy termed "knucklehead plays."

SDSU allowed two four-point possessions in the second half and two three-point plays in the final 90 seconds. Certainly, there are better ways to protect a nine-point advantage.

"It's like we were trying everything we could do to give the game away," said Nagy, whose team picked up its first NCAA Division I win of the season. "But we got big shots when we needed them."

Juniors Garrett Callahan and Kai Williams were especially clutch. The 6-foot-6 Williams posted a second straight double-double, tallying 12 of his 21 in the first half to lead the Jacks (3-4) back from an early 7-0 hole. The 6-1 Callahan scored 19 of his 21 in the second half, going 6 of 6 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes.

Belated congratulations to the Jacks for beating Central Arkansas. I wasn't able to follow the game, play by play, but the team apparently played with intensity during both games in Mexico. A solid core of players might be emerging just in time for conference play.
