I must say matt is an awesome man at recruiting players from iowa. remember big bill fischer, casey estling, derrek schantz all good margenthaler recruits from iowa. and there were many others. i'm glad he is seeing success as a head coach. he does good work.

Coached having success not only when they are here but after they leave is great for SDSU. It helps attract quality candidates for not only the Head Coach but for the entire staff.

Be careful with this, I'm not advocating any changes. We have the right coach and I stand firmly behind Coach Naga and Coach Larson!

It is good to see Coach Margenthaler and Coach Schott doing well at MSUM!

Isn't Austin Hansen on staff at Mankato as well?

I believe Casey Estling was a recruit while Soderberg was still here, but played mostly under Coach Nagy. Austin was in Mankato as a GA, but his time is probably up in that position.

Forgive me for my lack of background knowledge, as I am a new SDSU fan, and somewhat new to the area, but there seems to be some strong support for Coach Margenthaler as I read through some of the posts. How long has he been gone, and is my perception even correct?

You would be correct. Coach M. was a great recruiter and worked very well with Coach Nagy. He has done very well at Mankato State. In fact, all of their coaches most recently coached or played at SDSU. Here's a link....

Prior to coming to MSU, Margenthaler served as an assistant coach at South Dakota State University for six seasons. While with the Jackrabbits, he helped assemble a program that went 135-39 (.775) from 1996-2001, captured three NCC championships, made four NCAA post-season tournament appearances and one appearance at the NCAA Division II Elite Eight championship.

In your opinions, has recruiting suffered since Coach Margenthaler left? He apparently is recruiting pretty well at Minnesota State.

Seems to me that this is one of those questions that's impossible to answer objectively. The move to D-I changed all the rules for recruiting. No doubt that Coach M. is an excellent recruiter of D-II talent. But getting in front of borderline D-I players and convincing them to go to a D-II school has to be a different experience than getting into the homes of solid D-I players and asking them to come to a brand new D-I program.

Certainly the SDSU program isn't where we want it to be, and you have to look at recruiting. I think we've been OK--not good, but not terrible either) with recruiting D-I talent but have had serious problems retaining that talent (for a variety of reasons, well known to all here). We stumbled out of the box a couple of years ago with Moeller's transfer, got unlucky with Matt Jones, recruited poorly with Landon Scott, got unlucky again with Ben Beran, etc., etc.

Holdren's departure hurts a LOT, but that's another one you can understand--hometown boy gets a chance to play with his hometown Big 10 school. Hard to say that that's a recruiting failure--just another incident of bad luck.

On the other hand, Matt Cadwell is as good a player as we could expect to get at the current phase of our program. If we get a couple more like him, we'll be OK.

It is interesting that Cadsev, who is by no means a SDSU rah rah guy, said they very same thing not so long ago.

I am very excited about the incoming class and have all the faith in the world in our current coaching staff and their ability to build a quality D-I program.

I agree with Rabbit, the incoming class is very impressive. I think the coaching staff has done a great job recruiting. You cant really anticipate some of the freakish things that have happened over the past three years, and there are always going to be few "busts" on the recruiting fronts.

Please don't take my post the wrong way. As stated, I am so new to the program, just trying to figure out some things. Looks like the recruiting class is going to be pretty darn good, and hopefully our luck with those recruits will be good.

                            Re: Coach Margenthaler

I would argue that our current crop of recruits represents the most talented recruiting class the team has ever seen. Some of these recruits would not even have given SDSU a second look if we were still DII. Take that for what it's worth and I guess it's hard to compare recruiting classes based on the fact that we're in a different pool now, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more talented group of recruits in SDSU history. Now how those recruits pan out is yet to be seen, but the talent is there. (Also, I think it's pretty hard to argue that Holdren and Gilbert weren't 2 of the most talented recruits SDSU has ever seen. Granted, neither panned out, but that's sports and collegiate athletics. I had plans to be 240 lbs and an all-american by the time I was a senior but that didn't work out either. Matt Jones could say the same thing. None of these situations have anything to do with coaches and their recruiting ability. Sometimes you get 21, sometimes you bust.)
