Miller gets to the point
Providence grad unexpectedly in the mix right away

Keevan Miller reported to Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne on June 12 as the Mastadons’ only freshman and only non-scholarship player.
Now the preferred walk-on from Providence High School is also the Division I program’s only healthy point guard. That could spell early and unexpected playing time for Miller this coming season, when IPFW plays Notre Dame, Michigan State, Air Force, Kent State and Indiana State.
The thought is a bit intimidating, so Miller would rather focus on the present so he can be as prepared for the future as possible.
“I’m the only point guard in open gym right now. I’m playing in every game,” Miller said Friday evening. “Good for me but not so much for the team.”
Miller’s value to the 2006-07 IPFW roster grew virtually overnight when sophomore point guard Kyle Savely, a Corydon High School product, needed wrist surgery two weeks ago. He might not be fully recovered until October. (Miller said IPFW might bring in another point guard before the season begins.)
Another player, sophomore shooting guard Jakari Johnson, also is out with a wrist injury, and senior shooting guard Kevin Nelson was dismissed from the team.
“As a walk-on freshman it looks like I might get some pretty good playing time, but I’m not going to get overconfident or anything,” Miller said. “I’m going to work for everything I can.” . . . (read more)
