    IPFW schedule again has IUPUI
2006-07 program set; Mid-Continent Conference visit will be next week.

    From staff reports

With the Mid-Continent Conference visit to Fort Wayne just a week away, IPFW released its 2006-07 schedule for the men’s basketball program Wednesday with home-and-away games against in-state foes Valparaiso and IUPUI.

Road games against Notre Dame (Nov. 10), Air Force (Dec. 2) and Michigan State (Dec. 9) also highlight the schedule.

Though the very reason conference officials are visiting IPFW on Aug. 2-4 is because Valparaiso’s athletic program has chosen to leave the Mid-Continent for the Horizon League next summer, the teams usually put on a good show.

Valparaiso won both games last year, including a 74-68 victory at Memorial Coliseum. Two years ago Valparaiso won a controversial 74-72 game in overtime. A bucket by the Mastodons was waved off at the buzzer due to an offensive foul.

After a one-year hiatus, IUPUI returns to the Mastodon schedule. IPFW also plays against North Dakota State and South Dakota State — two programs also seeking Mid-Continent affiliation. . . . (read more)

IPFW schedule puts spotlight on Spartans

    By Sarah Trotto
    The Journal Gazette

One of the most exciting games in the IPFW men’s basketball team’s future isn’t scheduled for two more years.

Before IPFW plays Michigan State during the 2008-09 season in Fort Wayne, the Mastodons will face the Spartans in East Lansing, Mich., during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons, completing a “three-for-one” deal, which included a game in East Lansing last season, IPFW coach Dane Fife said Wednesday.

“That’ll be pretty neat,” Fife said by phone from Las Vegas on Wednesday, his 27th birthday, during a recruiting trip.

Fife insisted the 2006-07 schedule, which was released Wednesday, isn’t easier than last season’s, although the schedule features 13 home games – two more than last season – and three guarantee games on the road against upper-echelon teams – three fewer than last season. . . .

“Our goal is to get even in terms of home and away games.”

Last season, IPFW played 11 home games en route to finishing 10-18, a record for victories in a Division I season since the school began Division I play in 2001-02. The schedule included Michigan State, Purdue, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Penn State.

The ability to schedule home games was bolstered by IPFW joining the United Basketball Conference, an alliance among fellow independents North Dakota State, South Dakota State, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Texas-Pan-American and Utah Valley State to ease scheduling while other teams are in conference play after December. . . .
