  • Re: VCU Game Thread

I listened last night due to struggles with the video feed but it did appear that we competed last night. It got ugly at the end but with 6 or 7 to go we were within 4 I think. That isn't a bad showing considering this was considered by many to be the best team we see this year. I'm not looking for moral victories and neither is Nagy. My point is that at some time we are going to get that win going down the stretch.

    A couple of other notes.

    1. Clint Sargent has definitely elevated his game to another level. That is great to see. He is a tough kid, good defender, and has a fantastic stroke. Clint seems to be stepping up to the plate.

    2. Cordova has been impressive as well. It was mentioned earlier about not getting shots to drop but that should improve. He has been a beast on the boards.

    3. They have to find a way to get Kai going earlier in the game. Post him up, run some set plays, or something to get him involved early offensively. He's a little streaky so do whatever can be done to get him started early. He's a great kid and a huge talent and with more help around him this year he will have a chance to shine. He started this way last year also so I have no doubt he will get going.

Not sure what the record will be but it is going to be fun to see this team develop. The injuries have hurt but there is still a lot of talent out there and if they develop as a team we may be pleasantly surprised. Only time will tell.

Kai needs some set plays to get him going right off the bat, he can drive penetrate and jump over people....My husband has already had this conversation with Coach Nagy, last year....so ?????

I hope you didn't take offence to my comment Mrs. W. You know I think a lot of your son. He has the ability to control a game when he is on which also creates opportunities for others. Everyone we play knows that Kai has been our top scorer and rebounder so he no doubt gets the attention of our opponents best defender. If we continue to see others stup up like Cordova, Cassaday, and Sargent have then it will force opponents to not strictly focus on Kai.

It was great to see you last weekend. I hope you had a safe trip home. Look forward to seeing you soon!

They have in the past run plays to open a certain shooter (perfect case is Austin). It doesn't even need to be a 3 point shot. The perfect play set-up for Kai would be one which allows him to drive the lane. Get the threat of the drive in the opponents head and that opens up the mid-range shot. As the year progresses, we still see plays for Kai. I know his scoring is going to come. As a side note, anyone who has been to the games has seen his defense is great this year.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

Palarca got his shot swatted twice, got picked more than once, and on one of his first possessions carried the ball while dribbling through the full court press. I didn't know if anyone else noticed but we were only down 7 when Mack was taken out. When he came back I believe it was 71-49. I know some don't think he's up to speed or the greatest offensive threat but he probably did as good as most other point guards in the CAA will do this season against the VCU press. <- That is just a response to those blaming the loss on players. There was once a time, back in the day, where a win or loss was based on team effort. Nowadays, in sports in general, it seems like you hear more about "a player won it for us" or "so and so didn't show up, twas why we got our fannies whooped".

Plain and simple: we didn't get'r done.

I would hope Coach Nagy would take these conversations to heart and I think he does.

I know how we dont like moral victories, but this morning while waiting at the Doctor's office, I grabbed a copy of Sports Illustrated that had the Basketball Review for this year. I dont follow RPI and polls nor do I grab the basketball magazines off the rack like I once did so am somewhat in the dark with preseason polls etc. That all said I was very curious to see where Sports Illustrated had put VCU at in their poll. I was very please to see No 40th in the country. I know we were playing a very good team, but did not know how good.

BTW Sports Illustrated have NDSU no 61 which might also be correct, but we will see.

I also tuned in the game on WNAX and it was 25 to 6 and I thought, "OH NO" another blow out. All of a sudden the gap closed. I dosed off and woke up about an 45 min later and we were with six and then it got kind of ugly, but I am impressed nonetheless, and if Coach Nagy says we should have won, then we should have won. Its looking much better this year. The guys all back except for one and they have another year of experience, and its starting show. I dont like to get up on cloud nine, but I think we could still have a great season.

                    Great game guys:
I was impressed with your coach's use of timeouts to control momentum.
I was imressed with your outside shooting.
I was impressed with your tenacity
If this team stays healthy and keep their heads in the game you will win more games than not this year.

The team ran out of steam at the end...too many bodies being thrown at them all game.

Good Luck to the Jacks the rest of the year and hope we meet again

I would hope Coach Nagy would coach his team the way he feels is most appropriate.

I didn't know that parents got so involved now at the D1 level. When I played college basketball, if a player was unhappy they went directly to the coach or came to a team captain and both would go to the coach to discuss.

I know Kai's parents are just looking out for him, but it's a shame that it has to come to that.

I'm not gonna lie though, if the pictures are any indication of the the entire game..it looks like VCU had about 3 feet on us on every single shot, whether it be ours our theirs.

I was glad to hop on here and see that we were hanging with them, but in the end, they proved too athletic and pulled away.

Can't wait to get to my first mens game this year.

I don't think it's any secret that parents talk to coaches--all the time.

Not sure why people would be surprised to hear that Nagy talks to his players' parents--especially those who show such loyalty to their son by coming to so many of their games--like Kai's folks do.

I've talked to Kai's parents, and his dad (especially) has some definite ideas about how his son should best used--and from my brief talks with him makes some sense--to me, anyway. But I also think Nagy's trying to install a system, and I don't know how Kai's dad's suggestions fit with what Nagy's trying to do.

So, I'll just lean back, relax, and root for the guys to play hard for 40 minutes every night, and see what happens.
