This seems like a pretty decent attendence for a first game of the season.

And from watching the game (but listening to women's game) seemed that the crowd was reasonably supporting/cheering/jeering at the right times.

I agree. I thought the attendance would be under 2000. It's encouraging to get 2400 to start the season.

I was able to see the first half. It wasn't really very pretty. The effort was there most of the time, but they're clearly not fully comfortable with the new offense. Seems to me that if you're going to run that offense (four guys on the perimeter, one underneath) you need to attack and kick the ball out and then hit shots. Nagy has described it as a slashing, penetrating offense. I didn't see much of that. We ran a lot of motion on the perimeter, but there were few times when our perimeter players beat anybody off the dribble and made something happen.

Sure, SJSU has athletic perimeter players... but so does everybody else. Our guards are going to have to beat somebody off the dribble so the kick out will get us open threes. Palarca's return will no doubt help with that. Most of our open shots in the half I saw resulted from simply moving the ball around the perimeter, not from drives and kick outs. And we didn't hit many of those shots anyway.

On the defensive end, there were stretches of good defense punctuated by foot-stomping lapses that were obviously driving Coach Nagy crazy.

I can see potential in this offense and obviously they'll either play good defense or they won't play for Nagy. But it's a work in progress and there were too many stretches where things looked really shaky. One bright spot: Cordova played great. He just keeps getting better. It's easy to forget how young he is.

Now I realize Kai struggled and missed early and often (1-9) from 3-pt land, which he started to aim, instead of just shooting the ball. Biggest stat was free throws and the fact that Kai never got to the line. We a player is not hitting you need to try to get to the line!

It also bothers me that these guys are walking on eggshells, they miss a shot and the reaction from the bench(coaches) is like how did you miss that, or why did you shoot that? Not every shot is going in!

They did play hard and you can see the pain in there faces!

          Keep fighting!
If this is true than the guys need to find a way to loosen up, and I think that taking the ball to the hoop is a great way to do that. Whatever they can do to really move the defense and make them work will help if we are undersized and out-talented.

Be agressive, have fun and believe in yourself. If you do that and still put in the effort, I would think that any coaching staff would embrace those efforts.

I really thought that this would happen more this year with Kai and Garrett taking the lead. Hopefully they can find the joy of playing ball and just loosen up and get after it. I know they would be a blast to watch if they would do that.

Engen had 5 of our 46 rebounds and only had 1 turnover in six minutes of action. I'm not sure what you are looking for out of a player that gets 6 minutes.

I thought Engen played well. He guarded well in the post and didn't hurt anything on O. I think that's about what he's expected to do. I was pleasantly surprised by his play and very happy with Cordova. He was a little tentative to start, but got more confidence throughout the game and gave us some much needed presence in the post. He's a big body with some nice touch around the rim.

I thought Engen played well, though he didn't play a lot... I saw he force 2 bad passes from his post defense..... I think Cassady will help a lot when he gets back.... And Palarca should help a lot too.... Casey did alright but Palarca is better at the point.... But like everybody I think Cordova was the man of the night.... He finishes a few more of those buckets he has 20+ points.....

My apologies. I didn't realize Engen only had 6 minutes with 5 rebounds. I retract my statement.

It was amazing that the undersized Jacks outrebounded SJS. The Jacks definitely outworked the Spartans, but lack of size and shooting touch doomed SDSU almost from the start. Cordova looked great. Callahan and Sargent looked very good too. Williams struggled offensively but should come around. Casey hustles but can be reckless. Moss has the ability but didn't contribute much against SJS. Palarca probably would have helped. Engen did OK as a backup. Cordova and Engen have to shoulder way too much of the big-guy load. This team might have to play at times with five guards if Cassaday doesn't heal up soon. Cordova can't play the whole game getting banged around by guys bigger than he is. I didn't see Anthony Davis, who is injured, on the bench. He might have been sitting in the stands in street clothes. It's too bad Dwight Peterson isn't eligible right now. The Jacks could use his size.

The one thing I did notice about Mark was on defense. He was actually doing a better job of getting in defensive position against the post players.

For what it's worth, Nebraska dropped San Jose this afternoon 63-46.
