    Re: Ben Beran

Does anybody know much about the Basset kid coming in? What position will he play, seems pretty heavy (240) to play the 3, but too short (6'-5&quot to play the 4.

Tons of good stuff about Basset on this older thread (lots of it provided by JACKGUY II):

I think the recent departures (not including Ben) are largely mutual. Wenig and Green did not fill well into Nagy's scheme. Scott never developed. Andy Moeller was too selfish (not that I blame him).

Excellent question. Seems he vanished sometime around the discussions about Andy Kleinjan and his role at SDSU. I recall some comments about the SV "mafia" and then OK was gone. Now, I know nothing about OK except what he made available here so I may be way off. Don't even know if I have the association with Andy right.

This may help from an earlier thread:

I seem to recall that OK_Jackrabbit, as we knew him, left after a heated exchange (with a poster who is no longer a member) regarding some of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader sports writers.  This however could have been pure coincidence.  OK_Jackrabbit was gone on or before Feb. 11th.  The SVM post didn't happen until Feb. 20th.

No offense, but I'm not sure how you can say that Wenig and Green did not fit well in Coach Nagy's scheme, or that their departures were mutual.  Both logged more minutes than Ben their first year and put up better numbers.

Green averaged 10 pts and 7 rebounds as a sophomore.    Ben averaged 14 and 6.  Wenig had quit the team.

We're all entitled to our opinions, but to me all three looked like quality players.  I wonder where we would be starting those 3 seniors, Cadwell, and Holdren next year.  That would be a team I could really get excited about.

                  Re: Ben Beran

Ben was the NCC Freshmen of the Year so I would have to say he had a better first season then both Wenig and Green.  Wenig left at Mid-term of his sophomore year, after a foot injury that forced him to Red Shirt that season.  Green had off the court issues that hampered his development (and for the sake of his privacy I won't go into more detail) which was too bad as he was a legitimate D-I talent in my estimation.  Ben's story is well documented in this thread and I wish him the very best and thank him for his time in our program.  From a fans stand point I wish he was coming back, but there are more important things then College Basektball and if your heart isn't in it you shouldn't take up a roster spot.

I partially agree with you sfrabbitfan.  I would have liked to seen Green stick around.  Wenig was a good outside shooter but I think would have been to slow for DI, though his size could have compensated somewhat for his lack of foot speed.

It has been a pleasure watching Ben play these last three years.  It would have been great to see him play his last season, but there is much more to life than the sport of basketball.  I wish Ben and his family all the best in the future and am glad to hear that he will return to finish his degree.  I will never forget his performance against Kentucky and once again Ben, thanks for the memories.

                          Re: Ben Beran

One thing Ben can claim. He holds the all-time record for points scored by and SDSU player against one of the most storied programs in NCAA history in Kentucky. Next to Rondo, he was the best player on the floor that night and that's saying alot. It was great to watch him give Tubby fits trying to figure out how to stop this white guy from SDSU. He was one of the major reasons I was able to walk around Kentucky that weekend with my head held high. Thanks for the all the work for the program and thanks for being here when we were taking our lumps, Ben. Best of luck in the future.

Excellent summary. Green and Wenig both had positive attributes and talent but significant concerns arose and it was felt that they would both be better suited for a different program.

Nagy calls the shots and thats the way it it. I , for one, prefer that.

                              Best of luck to Ben!

He is a fine young man and has his head in the right place!

Sure will miss him on the court though!

I remember watching him when we played Central Florida in Orlando last year. I was standing along the wall above our basket with a bunch of CF students and they were all saying "Who is that guy, he works his ass off!" I just said that he is a hard working farm kid from the midwest!

He is the kind of hard-working kid that any coach would love to have!

Heard a rumor and was wondering if anyone else has heard anything. Heard that Ben may be reconsidering and may play this season.
