PREP BASKETBALL: Seneca grads shine, but fall in IBCA All-Star Game

BLOOMINGTON -- Garrett Callahan had a great night in the 2006 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class A Boys All-Star Game on Saturday night -- even if he didn't get the storybook ending.
Both Callahan and fellow Seneca alum Robert Rexroade played the final game of their high school careers Saturday in Bloomington, as the Irish suited up for the Class A North team in the IBCA All-Star Games held at Shirk Center.

Callahan -- who will be playing for South Dakota State come fall -- had a monster game, earning his team's MVP honors by scoring a game-best 20 points, but missed a three-pointer which could have tied the game inside of 10 seconds remaining as his North All-Stars fell to the South, 111-106. The South All-Stars rallied from a 15-point deficit at the break. . . . (read more)

Recent Seneca High School graduate and hoops star Garrett Callahan became the second sibling in his family to be named Most Valuable Player of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class A All-Star Game, joining his older sister, Bryanne, who won the award in 2000.

Garrett -- who signed with Division I South Dakota State University -- scored a game-high 20 points for the Class A North in a 111-106 loss to the Class A South last Saturday night at Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University.

In the 2000 IBCA All-Star Game, Bryanne scored a game-high 14 points for the Class A North in an 85-82 loss to the Class A South.

And he's got a little brother who's getting looks from D-I schools including SDSU:
Seneca High School senior-to-be basketball standout Griffan Callahan has drawn the attention of a pair of Division I schools.

Both Western Illinois and South Dakota State -- where 2006 SHS graduate and older brother Garrett signed -- have expressed interest in Callahan.

Last season, the 6-foot-4 forward averaged 11 points per game for the undefeated Class A state champion Fighting Irish, and received third-team all-state accolades from the Associated Press and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

The question is whether if it's a positive or negative that his brother is on the Jacks team. Even though they don't play the same position he may want to create his own identity on another team.

Garrett looks like he has stud potential. Loney introduced me to him after the press conference, impressed with him talked with him for 5 minutes or so.

Garrett broke his right hand yesturday in practice and is probably out 4-6 weeks. Tough start but we can do it.

I wonder if they will redshirt him since he will be out about a third of the season - maybe not though.
