Kai was interviewed on the post-game show. He had a good game. Almost a double-double. The final score was 67-56, by the way.

        Nagy:
It wasn't the way you draw it up late in the game, but we're not used to playing with a 17-point lead. I remember back when we were winning 25 games a year, some games like this, I got pretty tough on our players today, and they haven't seen me do that.

Part of the problem was we were playing pretty small, I can't expect Blake and those guys to know the 4-spot. We're just not used to playing with a lead.

Engen, Bassett, Loney played very well. Some of our guys are frustrated with how they're playing. We should have won three in a row, but we need to be happy with where we are.

We did a great job on Walker, I think he just got frustrated and they took him out.

Denver came out really flat, I was surprised. Our records are similar but we're moving in different directions. Where we've come from to where we are now, it was evident that one team's on the way down and one's on the way up.

Garrett's about a 95% free throw shooter . . . Cadwell needs to shoot better from the foul line.

A lot of it started with a good practice on Friday, Kai had a good practice. We were thrilled with the way Kai played, Mike got good shots from inside.

The nice thing is we'll get home fairly early tonight, have a complete day off tomorrow, come back Tuesday, practice Wednesday, then head to Minneapolis.

I told our guys I want to take them to things like a Denver Nuggets game. The key is that they need to respond the next day. If you come out flat, you have to focus on basketball, but we had a good time tonight and a good speaker (Nuggets play-by-play guy) last night.

I believe I've heard the Nuggets play-by-play guy speak at a company event. I think he was in a famous plane crash in Iowa years ago. I'm pretty sure he was the guy, I'd have to verify with my wife.

            Re: Official Denver game thread.

Schedule the remainder of the month:
            at Minnesota (3-5)
            at Montana (2-4)
            at UWGB (2-5)
            at UMKC (3-5)
            Montana St. (2-6)
            at Idaho (1-6)

Nobody with a winning record. All are winnable, even Minnesota with their recent coaching change, but it’ll take continued improvement by the Jacks. All are loseable, too. I'd guess the toughest games will be Minnesota and Montana. I continue to think if we finish December with a record of 3-12 or better, we'll be OK the rest of the year.

Regardless, its always big to pick up the first road win of the year.

It was a good game for the guys from what I have seen, a couple more games like this and we will forget the rough start, the team is coming together well and playing more complete as a team. It might be possible to finish the month with a .500 record or better IMO. The coaches have said they believe all the games are winnable.

If these guys can stay in the program things should start jelling at about the right time. NDSU will be one of the league favorites and SDSU in the top half of the Mid-Con if the programs keep a decent trajectory.

Sagarin had us at 318 and Denver at 311 going into this game. It's good to see opportunity for the Jacks to move up the chart as the team is coming together.

Here's a little more on Jerry Schemmel and some South Dakota and SDSU connections:

As noted by other posters, Jerry is the voice of the Denver Nuggets of the NBA. He's a Madison, SD, native, played baseball at SDSU for a couple of years and then transferred to Washburn U in Topeka where he rec'd his bachelor's degree and a JD (law) degree. Jerry's brother Jed was a Jackrabbit runner. Their older brother, Jeff, is one of only two South Dakotans to have run a sub-4 minute mile -- Jeff did it while the distance ace at Kansas State U. The other one was Steve Heidenreich of Watertown, running for the U of Indiana. SDSU running coach Rod DeHaven rarely ran the mile in college, more often running the "metric mile" (1500 meters) and he had run sub-4 equivalents. You should recall Jackrabbit Brad Lowery attempted to become the third sub-4 minute miler at the Howard Wood Relays in 04...ran 4:01 in very windy conditions and is the current South Dakota collegiate record holder.

Jerry Schemmel survived the terrible 1991 DC-10 crash at the Sioux City Airport. Jerry was Ass't Commissioner of the Continental Basketball Association at the time. He is a true hero: with a badly injured back, he went back into the smoking wreckage and pulled out a baby. He later wrote a successful book about the experience (Reader's Digest included a condensed version one month) and is a popular speaker.

Jerry's brother, Jeff, is the athletic director at SDSU. That's the OTHER SDSU: the Aztecs of San Diego State U. He's been there a couple of years.

                          Good people.

I may have read it wrong or it could be a misprint, but the box score in the Argus story on the SDSU-Denver game says the attendance was 271!! I've seen better attendance at a Junior High Girls game. How can the Pioneers keep a program going with numbers like that?

Tough to call the Denver BB team a "program". They have a team. Hockey is their big focus at the DI level. At least thats been my impression. I don't have much more insight than that.

Big win for the Jacks. They seemed rested and ready. A win on the road against a DI opponent is a very good thing. Now on the road to MN and MT, both will be tough games and should give us an idea about whether this team truly is improving.

When I was in grad. school at the University of Oklahoma in the the late sixties it seems that I remember basketball games that drew well under a thousand. John McLeod was the coach and wrestling drew much more than basketball--the program didn't pick up until they invested in decent facilities. Other than Columbus and Austin, OKC is one of the largest strictly college metros out there.

I'd expect Denver to be a tough place to compete in since there's a lot of competition at the professional level in a metro area that's mid sized given the number of teams they support.
