McKenzie is thier leading scorer and is a lights out shooter. Hopefully the game against UAB will have some effect on the Gophers.
Excellent points. As much trouble as the U has had this year they present some huge match-up problems for us. No way we can match their size inside. Loney has to play 30 minutes and that means no foul trouble. Agree about the guards, too, quite a bit quicker than most we have seen this year. I think Callahan can stay with almost anybody, I guess we will see.

Gather round, readers young and old! Step right this way and prepare to be shocked and amazed by the most audacious college men's basketball prediction ever made!

If you have a history of heart problems, please stay away! And you parents out there - you might want to shield the eyes of your young ones as we open this steel cage here to reveal ...

South Dakota State 67, Minnesota 65.

OK, stop screaming. This isn't as freakish as it seems.

I realize that the Jackrabbits (2-7) are 0-9 all-time against the Golden Gophers in a series that dates back to 1930. And I'm aware that Scott Nagy's slighty wayward squad was drilled 80-61 last season at Williams Arena.

Want another prediction? The 6-foot-3 shooting guard will score 26 points tonight, setting off a cacophony of cowbells throughout the Upper Midwest and beyond.
Our friend Stu seems to have gotten a softy for us.

        Terry's preview of tonights game.
The state of Minnesota has more NCAA Division I-caliber men's basketball players than the University of Minnesota can handle.

Of course, critics of the Gophers will say the slumping program has failed to land the best from the Land of 10,000 Lakes, anyway. But that's another story.

There are Minnesotans playing for the likes of Santa Clara and Montana. There are two at Furman, three at Cal Poly, four at Northern Iowa and eight at North Dakota State - in addition to the nine at Minnesota.

Yet until recently, the state largely was unchartered territory for South Dakota State, located about 20 miles from the Minnesota border.

Just four of SDSU's 37 career 1,000-point scorers hailed from Minnesota, and in Scott Nagy's first nine years as the Jackrabbits' head coach, he signed one recruit from that state.

But Nagy has brought in four in the past three years.

Tonight, he will have a chance to impress more potential recruits when SDSU (2-7) plays the Gophers (3-5) at 7 p.m. at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

"We're in Minnesota," said Nagy, who has traditionally put in more time and attracted more players from the state of Iowa. "It's pretty close, and there's a lot of mid-level Division I players. Some of those kids need to stay home. We feel like we can get those kids now."

          Re: Gopher Game Thread

Maybe I'm paranoid but I don't trust Stu. He knows has well as you and I that Minnesota has more experience and more talent than SDSU and that they are on their home court. For us to go in there and win its going to take our best game of the season and probably the Gophers worst. I suspect they are ready to circle the wagons and tonight just might be the night they do that. They absolutely drilled us at Williams last year.

I think Stu has a retort planned and I don't think it will be too SDSU friendly. Again, I was up late last night so I might just be sleep-deprived and paranoid.

Here is a story from the Minneapolis Star-Trib:

              http://www.startribune.com/512/story/859188.html

Men's basketball: Gopher opponent SDSU had rocky transition to Division I
South Dakota State tried to jump right into the big time in moving from Division II to Division I. Now its schedule is a bit more forgiving.

              Chip Scoggins, Star Tribune

As a redshirt freshman on South Dakota State's men's basketball team last season, former Cretin-Derham Hall standout Matt Cadwell played his first college game in Kentucky's venerable Rupp Arena.
Five days later, Cadwell and the Jackrabbits played at Illinois. Then came road games against Marquette, Nebraska and Minnesota, all before Christmas.

"I wouldn't say it was overwhelming," Cadwell said of the schedule. "But it was pretty tough."

Too tough, according to SDSU coach Scott Nagy, whose program has endured some rocky times in its transition from Division II to Division I. For a variety of reasons, the school put together a grueling schedule as a Division I independent last season, which led to a 9-20 record and contributed to more defections from the program.

In hindsight, Nagy, whose team will play at Minnesota tonight, said the schedule last season was a mistake.

"Part of it was we wanted to give the kids that experience," he said. "We found out quickly that those are not good experiences. Some of it was my own ignorance. I won't put the kids through that again."

Armed with a more manageable schedule but a much younger squad, the Jackrabbits are 2-7 in their third season since leaving the North Central Conference in search of a higher profile in Division I. They will officially join the Mid-Continent Conference next season, along with North Dakota State.  .  .  .  (read more)

This game will not be but I've heard the women's game will be televised on FSN when they head up to Minnesota.
