Interestingly, the average Sagarin ranking of the first 17 teams on SDSU's schedule is 204.9.  The average of the 13 teams remaining is 207.8.

So yes, the schedule gets a bit easier, in that the highest Sagarin-rated team is NDSU at 129, whereas in the schedule until now, Butler is at 14, Northern Iowa at 58, and Utah State at 93 are all now in the rear view mirror.

Coming up, besides NDSU, Utah Valley State is #140.  CSU Northridge is #155.  Middle Tennessee is #161.  Texas-Pan Am is #242.  IPFW is #279.  N.J. Tech is #325.

SDSU is #322 in Sagarin.  Our best win is vs. Arkansas State, #225.  We have home-and-homes with everybody left on the schedule except a home game only with Middle Tennessee.

The Jacks still have an uphill road the rest of the year.

One thing which will be interesting to see is how much if at all SDSU's ranking moves with the relatively close game at Butler.[/quote]

According to this schedule there's a few tough games left and some that we have a good chance of winning the last half of the season.

Whatever movie magic might have soaked into the brick exterior of Hinkle Fieldhouse, where the events that inspired "Hoosiers" took place, didn't help South Dakota State overcome the very real physical disadvantages it faced Saturday.

The Jackrabbits scored at peach-basket pace, totaling a season-low 14 points in the first half and making two 2-point field goals in the first 35 minutes. The final score - No. 12-ranked Butler 62, SDSU 47 - wasn't as lopsided as either of the two most recent series meetings and wasn't as bad as it could have been considering the disparity in size, strength, speed and experience.

"The first half it was clear: Physically, it was men against boys," Jacks men's basketball coach Scott Nagy said. "The thing I needed to give our guys that I couldn't give them was about two years in the weight room."

SDSU (4-13) actually outscored the Preseason NIT champion Bulldogs in the second half, yet never seemed capable of making a play for the lead in light of the first 25 minutes. At that point, the Jacks were 4-for-24 from the field and faced a 41-15 deficit even though they had held Butler scoreless for nearly four minutes to open the game.

SDSU wasn't tall enough, quick enough or strong enough to create open looks against Butler (15-2), which has nine upperclassmen - six taller than 6-foot-4 - among its top nine players.

"You've got to give credit to their defense," said Jacks point guard Garrett Callahan. The true freshman from Seneca, Ill., scored 11 points and was responsible for at least 30 of the assembled 4,170 fans. "Their defense was the best we've seen all year, and they just manhandled us pretty much."

Interesting analysis of the schedule, Filbert. I don't know if there's much difference between a 15-point loss and 40-point loss, in terms of ratings points. A 15-point loss is much easier to accept, though. I'll still hope and cheer for six (or, better yet, seven) wins in the last 13 games. Which, as pointed out in the Filb-alysis, won't be easy.

according to the Butler article, it's all based on records and W/L no win or loss margins.

SDSU's Sagarin rating has shot up to #320 after the Butler game.

Pomeroy has our RPI at #325.

Both are just damn embarassing.
