Butler provides SDSU with road map

INDIANAPOLIS - It's official because ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas said so: Butler is the best mid-major team in the country.

And to think, the Bulldogs (15-2), now ranked 12th nationally, were picked to finish sixth in the nine-team Horizon League.

Life as a mid major - even the best mid major - can be tenuous.

And since South Dakota State's hope is to eventually become a strong mid-major itself, Butler's story could be very applicable.

"I inherited a really good foundation that had a lot of success," Butler coach Todd Lickliter said. "Once you've had that you want to not only uphold it - this group's exceeded it in a lot of ways."

From 1996-97 through 2002-03, the Bulldogs went 167-59 and earned seven consecutive postseason bids. But the next two seasons they won only as much as they lost (29).

Butler recovered last season, going 20-13 and returning to the postseason, yet nobody could have predicted what's happened this season. The Bulldogs are 15-2, highlighted by beating Notre Dame, Indiana, Tennessee and Gonzaga to win the preseason NIT.

So why the slide and how has it been reversed? After all, Butler is a small school (4,300 students) with a small budget (234th in NCAA Division I in 2004-05) located in a big city, an advantage that, as Missouri-Kansas City can attest, doesn't guarantee success.

"A huge difference for us is Brandon Crone and Brian Ligon," Lickliter, a Butler alum, said of two of his big, beefy frontliners. "They were our leaders as sophomores. That's a hard thing to do, and they did a great job. We didn't have a senior and now they're seniors. They've got a great passion and a desire toplay the game the right way and to have success, and they're going to demand it of their teammates. I think there's a process there."

In 2004-05, Butler didn't have a single senior. This season, seven of its top eight players are upperclassmen and four of them have been regulars for at least three years.  .  .  .  (read more)

Sound like any team we know? 8-) Like I said, I like our chances (if things fall right) in '08-'09!

    Go State!

"My plea to them (the Jacks) is to keep learning and keep growing and keep getting better," Lickliter said. "South Dakota State runs really good stuff. They're a team that you better prepare for. They put you in tough spots because you have to help and then help again, and you end up having to scramble. What they do is very sound, and there's probably going to be some growing pains."
I like this quote from the article. Butler has gone through what we are going though before.

      Re: Road map to success

Here's a look at our possible roster 2 years from now when we're first eligible for the big dance.

      PG - Callahan Jr
      SG - Cadwell Sr
      SF - Williams Jr
      PF - Cordova So/Bassett Jr
      C - Engen Jr

      Bench
      PF- Bassett -Jr/Cordova So
      SG/SF - Yackley -Jr
      PG- Hoogeveen -So
      SG- Sargent - Fr/So
      SG/SF - Moss Fr/So

If everyone stays we will have a good team that will be competitive in the Mid-Con and will probally have some epic battles with NDSU and their 4 seniors (winkleman, woodside, moorman, nelson)
It will help the team next year to get Beran and Berte back but for the future it would probally be better to only bring one big man back and recruit another big man. But we might not have the luxary of being able to choose.

I think Cadwell has proven that he can score, especially when teams aren't able to focus on him alone. Callahan looks like he has the potential to be the teams point and leader.
Williams is talented but plays young because he is young. You can't teach leaping ability and I know Nagy can teach other things.
Bassett has a lot to learn but I think his attitude is good.
Cordova has to become and remain eligible and then learn the college game.
Engen is a work in progress at best.
Sargent and Moss can probably contibute right away if Nagy has that planned.

I hate to look too far ahead given the events of the recent past. I think a lot of people expected too much too soon with the transition to DI. Those are the ones who are really disappointed.

I feel we simply need to get recruits in at the level of Callahan and Williams and things will start taking care of themselves. Once we can do that and keep everyone here and healthy the sky is the limit. We know Nagy is a good coach and he is only going to get better by going through these tough times. As fans we just want to keep seeing progress and more wins each year. If that all happens I think we aren't far from exploding and opening a lot of people's eyes. One can only hope and I am one fan who has a lot more hope this year than I've had the last couple. It is hard to be patient but we all must realize that this men's BB team probably has it the hardest when making transition. Couple that with all the bad breaks we've received and it has been made especially hard. I say "keep up the hard work boys and lets make a run in 2 years."

            Re: Road map to success

I think what Nagy said about needing two years in the weight room to match up with Butler is an important aspect. I believe the Jacks will have to recruit more on potential than raw ability, because kids with that raw ability that are good enough to play at the D-I level will often times be snatched up by bigger schools. Hopefully, weight room emphasis and off-season workouts are taken even more seriously. Physical conditioning goes along ways towards any athlete's confidence level and attitude. In the future we hopefully will not require so much of our younger players and give them a chance to develop into great players.

Potentially there would be Juco Seniors on this team as well.
