This was Mike's senior paper that is required to graduate with a math degree. I believe he is going to also be doing his student teaching this semester.

It is a well produced project...I believe I heard he got outta the presentation with no questions being asked. The math professors were impressed I was told. Michael is an awesome student and a leader in and outta the classroom. He's got a bright future.

I only skimmed through the paper and presentation, but it's quite impressive. I have to admit that when I saw the subject, I was skeptical of the content. I graduated with a math degree as well. His paper is much more interesting to the general public that the one I wrote about the RSA encryption algorithm. Only a computer geek would really understand or care about RSA.

            Re: Michael Loney...

I actually had a discussion with my boss last month about shooting free throws. I stated, and still believe, that taller players have a physical disadvantage in making free throws than shorter players. The primary reason for this is that taller people have a higher release point than shorter people. If you look at the all time great free throw shooters, you will see that they are short. In fact Rick Barry use to shoot underhanded so he could lower his release point and he was a career 90% free throw shooter.

The higher release point means that the apex point for a taller player is higher than the apex point of a shorter player. Therefore, the ball is traveling at a higher rate of speed when it hits the rim for a taller player and the ball has a better chance of bouncing off the rim if it is traveling at a higher rate of speed.

Well that is my theory, I would like to see someone actually study the speed of the ball, as it is related to the release point.

I agree with that, and I'm sure Shaq would as well!

I'm toddling off to senility, but even I was in first or second grade when under hand free throw shooting went out.

I wonder if there's any data detailing free throw percentages from the late forties or early fifties. I'm sure that even if FT% was five points higher that no one would like to look like a dork.
