  • Summit League Postseason Awards

The Summit League released the men's post season awards today. Not surprising SDSU was not represented. One could make a case for a Kai but him being a sophomore I'm guessing hurt him. Only one soph. and one freshman made the list.

Notice the all newcomer team is all juniors. Seems like jucos are the way in the Summit.

I'm sorry but the wrong sophomore was listed. Kai should have been included in the second team.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

NDSU has 2 guys on the first team, yet was a middle of the pack team in the conference. I'm not saying Winklemen and Woodside didn't deserve it, it just seems odd that a mediocre team has 2 1st teamers.

Well, NDSU did finish 4th in the conference (game better than middle of pack I guess) but Winkleman and Woodside were 3rd and 4th in the league in scoring. Winkleman led the league in rebounds and Woodside was 3rd in assists. Those are pretty deserving stats in my book.

Well I guess that's ok , it's usually the case when your team doesn't do well in the standings it's hard for your better players to be recognised, it's a TEAM game.

If you ask Kai he would have been happy to give up the acolades of leading scorer leading rebounder to have won more games....

We need Kai to lead this team, both on and off the court. He is truly a special athlete and from what I can tell a special individual. I think he's ready to take things to the next level and I hope he does. Again, we need him to do that if we're going to realize any level of success, regardless of how you want to measure it.

Well Jackmd I think he knows that, so if he can lead the team on and off the court I am sure he will, but you know what they say you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink.....so the players have to be all on the same page...and that my friend is the coaches job not Kai's.

On a side note, I was just looking at the sophomores (Jonathon Jones Oakland) stats it looks like he had some good stats, he rebounded 90 and scored 310 so averaged 9.4 per game , Kai had higher numbers than he did in these catagories but not sure about any others he may have had.

From what I could tell this year, Kai is very much a leader on the team. Like everything else, leadership is a learned skill, and different people have different leadership skills. I also think that it's easy to forget that Kai was "just" a sophomore this year.

Sophomores are rarely the leaders on college basketball teams--in part because they haven't learned the role of leader. It was a role that he was basically forced into, and I think he held up pretty well. As the season went on, I think he did become in fact more and more of an on-court leader for the team.

It will be fun to watch him continue to grow and develop in the next two years.

Up to this point we don't have a true leader on this team.

A lot of candidates, but no one that has actually taken a step forward and taken this responsibility.

I don't buy the, can't make them drink bit(not just Kai, but anyone). We don't lose 13 games by 10 or less points this year if we have a true leader. True leaders don't need to make people do anything, people naturally follow them and follow by example.

That's not directed at any one player, that is directed from players top to bottom on the roster.

In this age of college basketball, it is much more common for freshman and sophs to lead teams.

                          Thanks Jack,

And again, I just want to clarify.. That post wasn't meant to put down any certain player or players. That is just my general impression of the situation.

Kai has a great opportunity in front of him, one that I don't doubt he recognizes. I, for one, want to see that potential recognized for Kai. As a faculty member at our states only medical school I spend everyday evaluating individuals who are felt by others to have the potential to be med students, then residents/fellows, then physicians entrusted with the lives of others. All of these individuals have the potential to be great, some of them recognize that, some of them don't. I'm looking for the ones that are going to REALIZE that potential.

I am not an expert in the field of college athletics and yet I'm on here commenting about it all the time. Imagine if there was a forum dedicated towards the performance in each of our respected professions. That would be interesting. I think I would like Coach Nagy's job, the opportunity to teach and evaluate students/players and help them realize/recognize their potential is a great opportunity. Enough said, Kai is going to be a key for this team next year and I'm glad he's a Jackrabbit.

I think part of the point is that leaders have to have followers who know what they're doing. Towards the end of the season I saw Kai much more vocal on the floor, pointing where some of the freshmen needed to be on the court, etc. than he was earlier.

Now, the fact he had to do that speaks more about the guys on the team who didn't know where they were supposed to be than about Kai as a leader. Yeah, that's primarily a coaching issue (getting players to understand where they're supposed to be).
