No, I'm pretty sure Moeller had a year left at SDSU when he transferred.

    (Just checked . . . http://www.sdsufans.com/cgi-bin/yabb...58896543/50#50 . . . yup, Moeller's last year at SDSU was his junior year.)

But that's all water under the bridge at this point.

The point of this thread is that the SDSU men's basketball team hasn't really had on-the-court senior leadership for a long, long time. Until we get some, we will continue to struggle. But the good news is that it looks like we'll finally be getting some senior leaders back on the court in the coming years.

Maybe I am just beating a dead cow here, but with being a junior his last year hear, he got a medical redshirt. When going up a division, I thought those didnt transfer as in Kardoes case, so it took a year away, and if it would be his senior year it would be it would have been taken away. All things considered. I completely agree. Next year will be better with the play and leadership from Ben and the talent from Mo cant hurt getting back either. I think after that Cadwell will be the kind of leader the team will need. He plays hard and even when hurt doesnt let it keep him down. It seems is in a bit of a sophmore slump. Which i would say is from the lack of experince and leadership on this team along with having a hip injury. Its been a disapoints few years sense our glory days of D-2, but these are the growing pains that we have to go through to get to wear we need to be.

More beating a dead horse. Matt's medical condition is Matt's business. All the speculation in the world won't change the fact that Matt could not compete at the high-level he expected. So, he focused his energy on getting an education and getting on with his life. Great person from a good family with a bright future.

Re: Senior Leadership, past and future

What bothers me to no end is the mention and continued what if conversation about Matt Jones. He graduated last spring and has moved on with his life.  I believe Jack#1fan said he had a brief conversation with him while he was part of the graduation procession. We will never know what Matt's potential and impact would have been on the reclassification period given a full and healthy individual. Lets just say he had a very brief and successful  career. The health problems shorten it. End of story. Matt as others have said is a class individual.

As far as this year's senior leadership, I fail to see that this is that big of a factor. I see it more of lack of seniors with playing experience that could carry the team on their backs. I feel a bigger factor is that we have several true and red shirt freshman who need to learn to follow.

The young talented individuals that we added this current season do have to learn to follow and most of that learning will come from the teaching of coaches. These guys have to  follow before they can learn to lead. In some cases the most talented have not always followed as they should so, say what you want about the senior leadership. Basketball being a team sport requires leaders and followers both. In all fairness to the true freshman they came here as leaders in high school, but they and the fans can not expect automatic leadership. The Late Johny Johnson the equipment manager knew how to deal with this problem in a very blunt manner.   A number of times I heard Johnny quoted as saying:
" Kid, you may have been a hero at your high school, but you are nothing here.". He humbled a number of greats at SDSU including Sid Bostic.

By and large the new freshman will tranform into leaders and will do so pretty much on their own. I dont think we will have five solid seniors to lead for another two years or more. I am very happy with the progress of the entire team. The new guys, the freshman, are doing more than expected.

I honestly don't think the senior leadership will improve all that much next year even with the returnee's and added jucos.  Maybe we will be stronger at the inside positions, but I will hold my breath for a winning season and expect an improvement in a number of wins. If we can retain the current true freshman, then thats a big step forward.

The women's program has 10 freshman and sophomores with Megan Vogel being a senior. Yes she is a leader, but we have some very good inexperience people who are not afraid to be a follower.

Re: Senior Leadership, past and future

Matt Jones was playing on a city team in sioux falls with Hanson and accouple other State Alum, so if he is in the twin cities he must of just went, yes Jones had bad luck I heard he had Lime disease it makes the most sence because Lime disease reoccurs when monno you get over though it takes awhile. But you would probally know more on the situation then I would. I have had breef conversations with Jones but a friend of mine has talked to him numerous times and has said that he is a class act all around something that can't be said about alot of athletes these days. Though State has had problems with the basketball teams you can say that there players have been class acts in defeat and victories.

Re: Senior Leadership, past and future

Andy Moeller did not have an extra year...he was going to be a senior at SDSU, and since we signed off on his transfer, he didn't have to sit out a year and was able to finish his career with one year at Mankato. Margenthaler had a very good team coming back, and Andy was hoping he could play for a national DII championship. They did have a very good season, but got knocked off in the regionals, I believe.

He was a good kid, but the late leaving did put the team in a hole as it was too late to get a top replacement.

If anyone heard Jose frias postgame interview you know we have some senior leadership. I have been very impressed with his comments regarding effort and optimism towards the future. Maybe he has interest in coaching. I think he has made the most of his opportunities.

Yeah, I've always liked when they have Frias on after the games. I could easily see him coaching or doing some TV/radio work. Well spoken and bright kid who always has a positive outlook, definitely sounds like a leader; in interviews anyways.

I kinda liked the beating a dead cow misstatement, goon. We've beat so many dead horses on the message board that it's about time we beat a few dead cows.

Yeah, its almost more refreshing that way beating a cow rather then a horse. Maybe we could trying beating a dead bison or yote.
