  • Massey Ratings Thru. 1/13

With discussion about the Summit being tougher, I thought a Massey Ratings listing might be interesting. Unlike most Massey rates every program on a continuum down to little bible colleges and community colleges. What this proves, I have no idea but he is crunching every score he can get his hands on. He also rates South Dakota high schools and I suspect some of those comparisons might also engender laughter.

I guess this could be put into a broader context of college sports. I left it here because of the recent comparisons in the SUU post about this being far different than the NCC. I listed the Massey football ratings last fall and the NCC and the two xDSU teams ranked much higher.

Comments about corn fed line men aside, college basketball is an urban sport, if you're a poor black kid in the inner city a basketball and court is a far easier place to hone your skills than finding a football field somewhere. I think that shows in some of these ratings. The country is full of marginal schools in urban areas that provide a very high level of competition. I, for one, would like to see greater attempts at recruiting these kids. That may mean making an investment in tutoring.

I noted that IUPUI's roster was laced with kids from a prep school in Cincinnati that (I think) was one of the new charter schools that have been springing up. Those kids would have probably been complete losses at anything but a community college, but I suspect someone got hold of them and worked on both their academic and athletic skills. They're a source of athletes that we shouldn't be ignoring.

Nagy has said that his best DII teams could win about 17 against the present competition and these ratings tend to bear that out. I suspect that if this team gets two more years under its belt that they'll easily be able to win 17 or so, given the quality of the Summit.

These ratings were cranked last week and don't reflect this weekends games. Note that even before beating SUU, that SDSU finished well up from the bottom of the Summit. All those close losses must count for something.

    Re: Massey Ratings Thru. 1/13

Guess I should have posted this with the Sagarin and other ratings-- forgot that the header included "other".
