  • Mackenzie Casey Article

Ironically, a day after my rant about poor coverage of SDSU Athletics in the Argus, there was a very nice feature on Mackenzie Casey in Monday's Argus Leader that talks about some of the struggles he has been through.

I couldn't find the link to it but it was very nicely written.

Mackenzie is a quality young man and it is great to see him playing for the Jacks!

Mac has always been one of my favorite Jacks players, He plays his heart out and without fear. I also witnessed him schooling Dee Brown takin' him to the hoop at the Illinois game last year. Mac's apparently been spending some time in the gym this summer, I watched him shooting around in Frost a few weeks ago, that dude is ripped and in shape!! and btw rarely missed a shot!! Way to go Mac!!

I see Mack had an addition recently to the family. Cute kid, congrats Mack. I'm sure raising a kid and playing ball isn't easy to do.

We had an event in Brookings last semester where we hosted a bunch of Native American high school students from South Dakota. They were told that SDSU student athletes would be speaking to them and they asked who was coming. When Mackenzie Casey was mentioned, the 40-some students all cheered.

Mac, Garrett Callahan, Thomas Bassett and Michael Loney showed up and talked to the kids. We simply introduced Mac and he took it from there. Every day a young man like Mackenzie Casey is in uniform is a great day to be a Jackrabbit.

Jackrabbit basketball player rises to role model status on reservation
Mackenzie Casey always dreamed of playing Division-I ball. His dream is now reality.

                Jackelyn Severin

When Mackenzie Casey was younger, he set a goal that some day he would go to college and play Division-I basketball. Now, the Jackrabbit junior guard is the perfect example of what having goals and sticking to them can achieve.

Casey, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and graduate of Red Cloud High School, has become a role model for his friends and family on the Pine Ridge Reservation and across South Dakota. But his work ethic is something that every South Dakotan should learn from and aspire to.

For Casey and his friends in Wounded Knee, basketball was not just something that passed the time; it was a way of life. Casey was always looking forward to the next five-on-five tournament or the next pick-up game at the nearest basketball court.

"I started in second grade and I fell in love with the game," Casey said.

Other students on the reservation dream to play college ball, but not many Pine Ridge graduates even finish college, said Maurice Twiss, head of special programs for Shannon County School District.

"Mackenzie has become a very positive role model," Twiss said. . . . (read more)

Mac is not on scholarship correct? He has been one of the few guys who seems to be positive and playing hard no matter what the situation is, you have to admire that. If the team has a left over scholarship available still next year, I think it would only be right to give it to Casey his senior year. He might be one a few on a the team who deserves a chance to get a scholarship, just my thoughts though.

He doesn't require an atheltic scholarship to pay for his school, if memory serves em correctly.

I believe that is correct. He has his school paid for by other means.
