The interesting points were: Tommy McDonald was the leading free throw shooter in the nation that year at (around) 94%. And the ref that didn't call the foul and gave the other team the ball was the same referee that Bobby Knight protested by throwing a chair at him. We had a seven point lead with 2+minutes remaining and Mark Tetzlaff fouled out, and then Tom missed the chance to shoot free throws and secure the game. (We were there and it was a heartbreaker!)
I only mentioned this one game because it was the one and only game I saw Tom play except for the finals of 1985 on ESPN. In 1985 I was living in Chicago and had not followed the Jacks for years and did not have any idea who most of the roster were. The McDonals were a fine family. From a business trip to Grand Rapids Mn, the lady I was working with knew the McDonald family real well and even knew who Gene Zulk was since he recruited them them to SDSU. This lady lived in Chisholm. I regret missing a number of games in that 20 year span, so I missed a seeing a number of standouts play.

I can't remember for sure, did Steve and Jim Lingenfelter (sp?) ever play on the same team. I don't think so but may have for one year.

I do not think this is correct. I always heard that Coach Knight saw an elderly lady that was standing over in the corner of the gym watching, and all he did was slide a chair across the floor to her so she would have a place to sit down.

My source the SDSU Basketball media guide 2007-08 page 86-87 All Time Letterwinners.

            Lingenfelter, Steve . . . . . . . . .1980

That does not mean they might have played together in at least one game during the season. I thought we only had one Lingenfelter, but I was not around Brookings in 1980 so could be wrong about that.

I think we need something like the Baseball Encyclopedia to answer these questions. They have record of evey baseball player that ever hit the big leagues.

We have an SDSU sports encyclopedia. His name is Ron Lenz. Somebody should ask him.

Yeah, and you'll get a very colorful rendition of any story you want to hear from the aformentioned encyclopedia

Somebody should ask him, then write it down, then write a book. I'd buy it . . .

You answered my question. Steve lettered in 1980. I started college in the fall of 80, and Jim was a freshman that year, so I don't think they did. Unless of course Steve also played in 1981 but didn't letter. I don't think that happened.

                        From Terry V blog:
"The Jacks are gaining another Callahan. Griffan Callahan, younger brother of SDSU sophomore guard Garrett Callahan said minutes ago that he will indeed transfer here for the spring semester."

                        From Griffan
“Up there, their good players get away with more stuff, and I know with coach (Scott) Nagy that’s not the case,” Griffan Callahan said Monday night from his parents’ home. “I think SDSU has better coaches.”

Good luck and welcome aboard Griffan

An article from Terry about the transfer:

Garrett Callahan's brother Griffan transferring to SDSU

BROOKINGS - The South Dakota State men's basketball program that has been prone to losing players is gaining one - another Callahan, to be exact.

Having been granted his release by the University of North Dakota, 6-foot-4 freshman forward Griffan Callahan will transfer to SDSU for the spring semester to join older brother Garrett Callahan, a sophomore guard, on the Jackrabbits. That combination netted Seneca High an Illinois Class A state title in 2005-06.

The younger Callahan - who can practice, but not play this season - cited a desire to reunite with his brother and a lack of chemistry with the players at UND as the reasons for the move.

"Up there, their good players get away with more stuff, and I know with coach (Scott) Nagy that's not the case," Griffan Callahan said Monday night from his parents' home. "I think SDSU has better coaches."

Nagy declined to comment because he had yet to speak to UND coaches about the situation.

I glad we got transfer in as others have stated. If Griffin helped Garrett win the State Tourney In Illinois, he has to have talent. What I seen of the Illiniois tournament and it's been a while, the teams who make the semi finals are very very good.

I do wonder why UND choose to red shirt him. Their mistake is our gain.
