  • SDSU Basketball brothers

Its been a long time since SDSU has had two brothers on the roster at the same time. The only two I can think of are the Schrieber brothers from Agar SD and that was when Sox Walseth was coach or it might have been the start of the Jim Iverson era.. A long time ago. Maybe there were others. I kind of lost track of SDSU athletics after 1965 and did not get back into things again until 1986. So in that block of time I guess there could have been several sets of brothers.

If the brother has half the talent of Garrett, we can use him.

It would be nice if we were able to get Garrett's brother to come play for State.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

The passage of time does tend to blur memories doesn't it! We had multiple members of the McDonald family in the late 70's and 80's. Was there ever a time with two of them?

I know Tom was still playing 1985-86. I remember an UNO game where he shot the lights out with what now would be considered a 3 pt and those shots only counted 2 in that game and SDSU still won. Tom I am sure was a senior that year and his first year would have been 1982-83 and not sure what year the other one graduated. Seems like it was 1980 or 1981, but it could be 1983. Media guide tells me Paul lettered 1979-80 and Tom lettered 1983-1986. I believe Paul transferred in from some other institution.

Here are the two I mentioned:
        Schreiber, Marion . . . . . . . .1954-56
        Schreiber, Robert . . . . . . . .1955-57

Also I am guessing but I believe John and Steve Brown were brothers too, but it would appear they were never on the same team:

        Brown, Steve . . . . . . . . . . .1975-78
        Brown, John . . . . . . . . . . .1979-82
        Very close though.

Yes, Steve and John Brown were brothers. Steve Brown was the Harry Houdini of shooting: tie him up, handcuff him, blindfold him, put him in a steamer trunk and drop him into the deep end of the pool in the HPER center, and he'd still make the shot.

In about 1974, we almost had two Mulders on the team from Renville, MN. If my memory is correct, Larry's younger brother, Kevin, came to State but then decided to play at Moorhead (MN) where he had a good career (he's in the Dragon recordbook for field goal shooting). I recall that Renville, MN, had a great team in about 1970-71 which featured (I think they even started) five Mulders, two or three brothers and some cousins. Larry was a good player for the Jacks but had real bad ankles which were eventually repaired (I think after his junior season) with some interesting surgery in which the Orthopedic docs drilled some holes in the appropriate places and wove in some "new" ligaments. The surgery was successful and Larry had a good senior campaign.

Dave Thomas came along after I left the state (and wasn't paying attention), but weren't he and John brothers (I only had a one year overlap with John)? Or was it cousins?

Dave, John and Mel are brothers, played on the great Alexandria teams (Dave's the youngest...I think Mel and John were on the Alex State Champ teams in about 1964 and 1966...I think Howard got them in the title game in 1965 but I'm not positive---I was only nine years old!) through the middle and late 1960s and each were outstanding Jackrabbits.

These are all cut and pastes from the Media Guide Page 86-87 and appears the Thomas's are more recent than the Schriebers:

                Thomas, John . . . . . . . . . .1967-69
                Thomas, Mel . . . . . . . . . . .1968-70
                Thomas, Dave . . . . . . . . . .1970-73
                Thomas, Roger . . . . . . . . . . . .1969

Mel and John were brothers as JDjack mentioned. I remember a March of Dimes double hitter in Sioux Fals. The Thomas brothers from Alexandria and Gene Zulk from Spencer and other SDSU standout named Vern Schoolmester played in the double hitter. I can't recall the town in Minnesota, but White SD native and SDSU grad Arlin Patrick was the coach. I want to say Adrian? I know the year was 1965.

Dave played on Onida's state championship team of 1969. Gary is the youngest and he coached at Augie, Watertown H.S. and most recently at Brookings H.S. He is now the Ass't. Principal at BHS.

Paul McDonald played at Nebraska before coming to SDSU. His brother Joel played at St. Cloud State. He also had a couple of sisters that played at SDSU.

My memory is getting faulty! Thanks for the correction, 1bunnies, about Dave Thomas and the Onida team of 69. The Thomsas are great people.

Roger Thomas was also on the team in 1969 at SDSU.

                      John 67-69
                      Mel 68-70
                      Roger 69
                      Dave 70-73

                      Ditto on the great people.

Seems like Thomas's father was an ordained clergyman, not sure of the denomintion, but apparently he served churches in Alexandria and perhaps later was serving churches in Onida.

I guess the Thomas's have the distinction of having three brothers on the team at one time. That has to be a one and only.

While Tom doesn't rank in SDSU lore as firmly as Sid Bostic, fans who were around will remember that we lost a national championship in Springfield, MA when Tom was knocked out of bounds by a Jacksonville, AL player on an inbounds play near the end with the Jacks leading; no foul was called and the ref gave the ball to Jacksonville. The interesting points were: Tommy McDonald was the leading free throw shooter in the nation that year at (around) 94%. And the ref that didn't call the foul and gave the other team the ball was the same referee that Bobby Knight protested by throwing a chair at him. We had a seven point lead with 2+minutes remaining and Mark Tetzlaff fouled out, and then Tom missed the chance to shoot free throws and secure the game. (We were there and it was a heartbreaker!)

I was listening to evey play of that game in DeSmet at my uncle's house. It appeared that we got "screwed" as they say. I'll never forget all of my family sitting in that house listening to the Jacks. I was hooked from that point forward.
