TULSA, Okla. - It's unfortunate that Conference USA already was taken.
That's probably the best name for the 10-school, nine-state Summit League, formerly the Mid-Continent Conference. There's really no good way to divvy up basketball travel partners in a league that has a Texas-sized footprint.
"I don't think it's necessarily easy," South Dakota State women's basketball coach Aaron Johnston said of the between-game travel, "but it's easier than what we had."
Last season, for example, the Jackrabbits made two-game trips from UC Davis to Western Kentucky, from Utah Valley State to Texas Pan American and from IPFW to New Jersey Tech. By comparison, the Summit League schedule has only one such mandatory fly-between situation, from UMKC to Southern Utah.
Nonetheless, the new routes will require some feeling out for members new and old.
The SDSU men and women jumped right into the conference crisscrossing this week by tackling the longest day-between drive: Shreveport, La., to Tulsa, Okla.
