    Re: Oral Roberts in Tulsa

OK, I tried to do the "perspective" thing, and looked for the last time SDSU lost a conference game by 29 points.

The last two games of the 1989-1990 season, we took the North Dakota trip and got hammered twice:
UND beat us 89-52 (37 points), then
NDSU beat us 110-69 (41 points).

That team finished 8-19. This team should, I think, do better than that.

      Nagy (paraphrased, of course)

We didn't respond in the second half. Our kids gave in to despair in the second half. It was men against boys, to be honest. That's just the way it is right now. You need your big guns to show up--Ben, Kai. They didn't.

They were a bunch more aggressive, Scott Sutton did a much better job than I did at taking advantage of matchups. There's no pressure on shots when you're up like they were, it's easy to make 3 point shots.

The way we shot, it's unbelievable that we actually won the rebound battle by one. We definitely need Berte in. If he was healthy he'd be starting.

Pleased with the way Mark played, he played well, he got a lot of hits late. I thought Dale played well the last five minutes, I told him you need to play like that when the score is close, when the game is tough.

These guys have no college experience. I'm disappointed we took a real big step backward from where we were, we're just not very good at defense, it's my job to figure it out. We've got to get some things changed, we're never going to have enough offense, the way we've played defense.

Kai was frustrated most of the night, Garrett was really never involved in the game for whatever reason. You just have nights like that, you go back and watch film and learn from it.

We're letting all those people who picked us last be right with the way we played this weekend. In terms of the most intimidating place we've played this year, Minnesota will be it.

Oh, yeah, the following year, we went 24-8, won the NCC tournament, and lost to UND by 3 in the title game of the NCAA regional at Grand Forks. I'd take 24-8 and a Summit League championship next year, if we can get back on track, stop regressing, and start learning, growing, and getting better game to game. I'd even take 8-19 this year, if steady progress resulted.

Every team has a couple of stinkers every year. I just hope we dont have more than that and the team doesnt give me that indication.

I am gonna sign off. Minnisota may be a rough one too, the next two or three after that may tell how the season will go.

Rough game to watch and listen to. Kind of bummed to hear that two of the players were to late to shootaround, especially those two guys. It seemed to set the pace for the rest of the game.

As fans, we have to stay behind this team. It's easy to get down on a team after a bad performance, but let's show our support by cheering them on to two victories over Idaho and Denver on the December 15th and 18th.

Here's to not seeing another one of these performances the rest of the year. Let's take a giant step forward!

P.S. Remember that the Gophers game is on the Big Ten Network on Wednesday. Let's hope for a good game.

Missed every second of a game that sounded perfectly miserable based on what I have seen here. Am I stunned? No. I've said it many times, sometimes to others disdain, this team could lose everytime they take the court. They haven't played together much and none of the individuals are proven at this level. We are going to have more nights like this one. Onward and hopefully upward. Tough one to take, glad I missed it.

                  Re: Oral Roberts in Tulsa

Well, the official party line from the story on Gojacks.com is that the team is battling the flu.

TULSA, Okla. – In addition to battling the flu, the South Dakota State men’s basketball team battled Oral Roberts at the Mabee Center in Tulsa, Okla., and came up on the losing end in both accounts, dropping the basketball game by the score of 80-51 on Saturday night in Summit League action.

The Jackrabbits fall to 3-5 overall, 0-2 in The Summit League, while the two-time defending conference champion Golden Eagles improve to 6-3 and 2-0 in league play. Redshirt freshman Anthony Cordova led the Jackrabbits with a career-high 14 points, but no other SDSU player finished in double figures, the closest being freshman Clint Sargent, who finished the night with nine. After taking a couple of early two-point leads on a pair of baskets by sophomore Mark Engen, the Jacks watched the Golden Eagles steadily build a 36-22 halftime lead. The Jacks struggled to shoot 24.1 percent (7-of-29) from the floor in the first half, while ORU shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) before the break. That lead, along with ORU’s shooting percentage, continued to grow in the second half, as the Golden Eagles shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) in the second half, including a 75 percent effort (6-of-8) from three-point range. The only bright spot on the night for the Jacks came in a 37-36 rebounding advantage. Engen and Sargent both finished the night with six each. Shawn King led four Golden Eagles in double figures with a game-high 17 points, followed by Moses Ehambe with 13, Marcus Lewis with 11 and Adam Liberty and ten. The Jackrabbits, who get a break from conference action until they host Oakland on Jan 3, travel to Minnesota on Wednesday for a date with the Gophers. Tip-off from the historic Williams Arena is scheduled for 8 p.m., and can be seen live on the Big-Ten Network.
If true, then this game would indeed be an aberration, and I would feel much better.

                  Go Rabbits! Beat the Gophers!

I remember these two, SDSU had a half empty fan bus, it was early March and kind of good to get out of town for the weekend, I thought so I went. Those two games were ugly. The Bison just poured it on at home since SDSU had often won in Fargo in the years just prior. Definitely a low point in SDSU BB, but we are not any where near there yet. Our post and inside people need to get better and that could still happen. Judging by Emming's comments, we were not getting the calls we should have especially on the inside people. ORU got to push off a great deal and they apparently knew the crew officating better than we did. We got work to do in practice, but with U Of Minn and Idaho next week, there might not be much time to do so.

Hopefully recruiting might find better 4's and 5 as we still might have a talent gap IMO.

I thought Mark Engen start was kind of interesting tonight plus Cordova did a good job.
If Coach Cunningham can get these two to play more skillfully, then it will be a step in the right direction. We seem to be having problems with offending and defending the big 6'10 guys that we are running into.

Flu illiness certainly would not help us either. I guess we have gotten a rude welcome to the Summit Conference. I find it interesting that the new members of the conference start off on the road, but maybe seniority in membership has some value. Heck we are not done by any means.

BTW, the low season in 1989 was just prior to Chris White coming on the scene. Chris was one player who seemed to make a big difference the following year. I doubt we can find some one like Chris White to make a quick difference at our current level of competition. The talented and academically sound JUCO's seem to go quickly to the better programs. Maybe we have the talent but its still developing. I am not discouraged yet.

89 was also the beginning of the end for Thorson. Not even Chris White, 2 conference championships (one tourney, one regular season) and a regional championship could salvage his job. A 12 loss season in 92 and he was headed south to The Mount.

I think will learn a lot about this team on Wednesday. Will they bounce back? I'll be ready to cheer them on.

                          Re: Oral Roberts in Tulsa

Thorson lasted three more years after 1989. The year after Chris White left we had a 19-11 season according to media guide. Whether we are now in a similiar situation I hesitate to comment. I am just going to be positive and hope things improve and I tend to believe they will. We got a much better head coach and staff than what we had in 1989. Also the level of talent is much better than back in early 1990's. Plus you have to consider Thorson was hired by Forysth and Fred took over as AD in 1991 and he made a number of unpopluar changes, and no need to rehash those.

Different time and place. I have been impatient in the past, but its done no good for me and everyone concerned so might as well be positive and move forward.

"Them being our two leaders, they should just take (the punishment) and come off the bench and play hard," the Roosevelt graduate said, "and we didn't get that from them tonight."

Wow, that's quite a statement. This could cause some resentment on the team or it may be just what is needed.

That was my take. Kinda walking a fine line there with that statement. He has a strong point. Probably shouldn't have sent that message through the newspaper though. Its the truth, but it should have been kept private between the team, IMO.
