  • Re: UWM Game Thread

It was like the basketball version of the SUU-SDSU football game in regards to referees from a couple weeks ago. Oddly timed calls. It was like they normally ref'd DII or DIII games.

But as I said before, when you have 20+ TOs, you aren't going to win many games. If we cut this number in half we win.

Cut the turnovers and we start to win games. I dont think we have to IM Coach Nagy on that point. I think the talent is showing here and there. We will probably struggle through a few more losses, before things begin to get better. I liked listening to the first half.

        Coverage from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

Proof that big papers don't necessarily have good sportswriters. The guy mentions UWM's enormous advantage in athleticism twice, and doesn't bother to talk to Nagy or any Jackrabbits.

Way to phone it in, dude.

When more guys like Michael Loney stop jumping ship and stay. I'm just glad that Beran and Berte are back this year, and I think this is where they bleeding stops. It doesn't mean the Jacks men are going to win 20 games this year, but this year is finally a year in which there is real potential for growth. Then we take these 9 players who are freshmen and sophmores this year and go forward.

This group needs to stick it out, learn and compete with the help of the seniors this year and then be ready to go it on their own next year.

Then we will have veteran team and the Jackrabbits will be a considerable force in the Summit League.

            A few thoughts:

Watched the game for free. Not a bad presentation put on by UW-Milwaukee and the Horizon League. Take some Notes Summit League.

If you make fewer threes and free throw than your opponent, you're prob. going to lose. That said we need to have some time in practices where we shoot threes in game situations. We can't make a three in a game to save our life. Until we start making three's consistantly, I can't really count on us winning many close games. I.e. Look at the last 2 games.

Guard play: While they can score, they need to work on slowing down their pace. Their mental mistakes and breakdowns have cost us. Slow the ball down, forcing stuff to happen isn't going to result in good things happening 80% of the time. Your hustle on the court is appreciated but take notes from the women. Control the ball better does = more wins.

It's nice to see us rebounding better and scoring in the post more. If we can get BEN, KAI, and MO going we will have a good front line that will be threats and keep defenses from not focusing on just one of our big guys.

Bench play, where are you guys this year? To win we need guys who can come in off the bench and fill in for those we take out. Until we have some consistancy on the bench, we're going to have those spots in games where we struggle.

Speaking of Kai, it was nice to see him back in the scoring column. Defenses have recognized he is one of our main threats and key on him. Getting him going in games means we have established a multiple threat offense and the opponent's D is spread thin.

After Halftime Let Downs. The last two games we have either been tied or had the leads. In the past we have not had this in our favor. For whatever reason we cannot be prepared after the half. I don't know if they have to let Rob chew some more ass at halftime to get the guys fired up or if Nagy needs to get on his players more. Their letdowns have cost them what could be a 3-0 record.

I have faith in this team, compared to the last two. This group has shown they do have the stuff to win games this year. Question is do they half the ability to push things after halftime and pull out to bigger leads. I think this team is better than the last two and we have the guys who want to be here.

Come out and support these guys this weekend as the take on a tough UNI team at Frost Friday night.

Trying to be as polite as possible here, but to the guy who said "we will ahve a veteran team when we have veteran players" - NO KIDDING!! We've been waiting five years for that now and it looks like we will have to wait a couple more.

It is a sign of the naive or desparate to sit back and say just be patient things will get better. I am neither of the above. Despite how I sound sometimes I believe in SDSU as an institution and the basketball program and this group of players. What I will not do is lower my expectations and suggest we accept the status quo. In everything in life there has to be accountability for both the good and the bad and that is what I expect.

I may be as positive as anyone when it comes to this team but i would submit that there isn't anyone in Jackrabbit Nation that is willing to accept status quo! That inincludes the coaches and the players! We all want to see progress. I am seeing that this year but everyone esle can speak for themselves.

All I'm saying is our starting lineup is 2 freshman, 2 sophmore, and 1 senior who didnt play last year. Heck, our WHOLE TEAM is 6 freshmen, 5 soph., 1 junior (who I've never actually seen play), and 4 seniors, 2 of which weren't even on the team last year (and one is hurt) and 1 is redshirting.

So what else can you do besides be patient and believe things will get better?

In the next 2 or 3 years 1 of 2 things will happen:

                  1. All of our young guys leave the team again, leaving us hopeless again for the next 5 or 6 years

                  or

                  2. They hang in there for a few games, weather the storm, build some confidence in themselves, work as a team, (which I think we are getting there) and then win some games...but you can't expect basically a whole team of freshman and sophmores to go out and whip up on the competition. But they are close, because that is just about what they did to UWM, just need to work on those TO's.

I could've just saved my self time if I would've just quoted this.

I like where the team is headed.

If you're referring to me RB (I said it before the poster you are actually referring to), I don't think you read my post very well in response to your post, where I said:

"Who says we're happy with close losses. I will say I'm happier with close losses rather than 30-40 point losses. We will have a veteran team when we are able to have our freshman recruits move through the ranks for three years along with the others behind them. I think that is going to happen. I think we all know why that hasn't happened."

I said...we will have a veteran team when we are able to have our freshman recruits move through the ranks for three years. I believe this year's sophomores (last year's freshmen) will be around next year, as well as our freshmen, and so in 2009-20, I think we will have a veteran team if that holds true. It does no good now to be crying about the lack of a "veteran team", since we haven't gotten there yet...whether we like it or not.
