This is not smack, but feel free to issue a warning... their fan base is sad. They aren't even fired up for this game anymore.

I actually think they have some pretty good players and athletes out there. But they don't seem to play "together" that well.

Which is why I keep harping on what a good job Hendo and crew are doing.

I can't remember which player for USD it was, but he went up for a massive tomahawk slam in traffic. I mean his head had to be at rim level but for whatever reason he just got stuffed my the front of the rim and landed on his back. It was really an epic fail in a good way lol

Something I found amusing on Saturday. Their coach made a comment that they had not won in our building "with fans" since 2000. I wasn't in college yet in the year 2000. So in 25 years they have won exactly 1 game in Brookings and that was without fans. As a fan base that has to have an effect.

And as far as recruiting is concerned the apathy from the fan base has to be a factor in trying to convince players to come to Vermillion. In general, Vermillion has to be a bit of a tough sell to recruits any way. Small town and kind of off the beaten path. Even compared to Brookings, Vermillion is inferior when it comes to many amenities and things college kids "want".

I like their current head coach but he's struggled to build any momentum down there. He didn't have a great foundation when he came in. Regardless, I just don't think their team is really exciting and they're losing any following they had. Very few local kids and no real star players to get behind. The game Saturday was maybe the least intense rivalry game I've been to. Was over within the first few minutes and you could hardly spot any red in the crowd outside of the visitor's section.

I seem to have misplaced the box in which I store smack warnings, so carry on.

I know this may raise a few eyebrows on this message board, but think about this: If USD fan support doesn't start picking up, that isn't good for SDSU or the Summit League or the MVFC. We don't need a conference mate to fail due to lacking financial resources (can everyone recall Western Illinois?). The 2024 USD football team deserved, but didn't get, sell-out crowds for every game in the DakotaDome. They're missing out on a lot of ticket and concession revenue. With a Dome capacity of 9,000, USD should be selling out every home game to have a fighting chance to adequately fund its programs. I expect to see USD having another great year in 2025 -- but will fans fill the Dome for every game? They certainly should but I doubt they will.

Many programs cannot attract large student crowds. I think that's a growing problem across the nation. We have pretty good student support at SDSU football but as the clock ticks into the third quarter, the student crowd starts shrinking. Maybe the transfer portal and NIL have eroded fan interest in football and basketball at all but the upper crust of FBS football and D1 basketball. USD has a nice basketball facility; but watching USD home games on TV makes me think their fans have little interest. When I see reported attendance numbers, and if I assume the numbers are accurate, I wonder why the televised games seem to indicate very few fans are present. Are the TV cameras on the wrong side? Sometimes we get a camera shot of the side that is normally not in the TV view and it shows a larger crowd than one would have thought was there. (Move the damn cameras to the other side!)

SDSU's First Bank & Trust Arena is reported to have a capacity of about 5,000. We had a good crowd on hand for the USD game: .4,764 reported. USD Sanford Coyote Student Center has a reported seating capacity of 6,000 for basketball. For the SDSU at USD women's game, the crowd report was 2,956 (watching the game on TV, I would have estimated the crowd did not exceed 1,500).

I agree with da coach: USD has some players / athletes on the floor. They'd sure have more motivation if they had more vocal supporters in the stands.

If the women's game in Vermillion would have been a stand alone game ( no men's game in Brookings ), it would have really been embarrassing. There very well could have been another 1000 fans in blue at the game.

This is starting to read like a Montana/Montana State football thread. I hope no one shows up and supports the Coyotes. It will make it easier for me to get tickets to the Summit League. Go Jacks!

The attendance at SCSC on Saturday could have been close to 2000. They report all season ticket holders for attendance. They have changed the seating behind the visitor bench to student seating. The entire section had a row or two for the visitor parents with 20-30 students standing behind those rows. The rest of the section was empty save a few adults who slipped in and sat higher. There were no seats for sale in that section and the end where students sat in the past was empty other than the band. It is an experiment that has not worked even for a rivalry game. The third coach in a short time with another losing season imminent is not being supported with attendance. It is not a great sign for the Summit if team like USD falls back too far even though some Summit teams are showing improved play and attendance.
Best to remember these are kids and they are doing everything they can to entertain us, be scholars, and all in all be great humans. Jackedforlife

Let's summarize the thread so far: SDSU fans want USD to have better attendance.

                    Weird, huh?

Well when you phrase it like that….it seems pretty stupid.
