my grad school alma mater is Marquette and we get to hear from St Thomas fans that they will be in the Big East in five years so the Big East should respect them now.

Its literally in their strategic plan and (un)fortunately they have the funding, endowment and enrollment to do so.
Their enrollment would place them 6th in the current 11-team conference.
Their endowment would place them 7th.

9 of the 11 are private Catholic based schools (as is St. Thomas).
4 of the schools play football and 2 play hockey (as does St. Thomas).

St. Thomas to the Big East was an easy call just as soon as the SL invited them.
