  • GDT Corn Showdown Series:Jackrabbits(12-2) vs the Varmints(5-8) @ Frost Arena

Todd Lee brings what is left of the healthy team during the initial year as HC. It is their last road game prior to hosting the ND teams. Burch-Manning is likely to be a new face not present in the first match up. Johns,6'8" Aussie, is likely done for the season. The yotes were a preseason #2 pick and they are now in the #6 slot. Burch-Manning, Jech, and Powers are the seniors who will not be playing in Frost again if they all would be able to play today. Big man Hagedorn is expected to return to Vermillion following redshirt injury. Based on the exodus of fans in Vermillion following the WBB game in January, I would not expect many fans to be dressed in red today. There is not time for any letdowns by the Jackrabbit team as the seniors build the new Frost winning streak(7) and prepare for the SLT. I would like to see another boring game like the one in Vermillion with the same results. Go Jacks!!

The Coyotes looked very good against Denver (as several teams have), and this is a big game for them. They can't be taken lightly. Stanley Umude is a stud, and they've got a few other pretty good players.

Sounds like Johns may be done for the season, and Jech is hobbled, so the Yotes don't have a lot of size. Post up Daum early and often, and get what size they have in foul trouble. They will likely double on him, so there may be some open threes available.

Umude is the bright spot when Burch-Manning was injured. He spent a lot of time on bench unappreciated. The match ups should be easier than PFW since Kelley is under 6' and Simpson is 6'2". Will Arians be asked to stay with Umude? That would leave Flatten for Peterson which is positive for Jackrabbits in that match. Orrrrrr will we see the zone again today? Armstrong off the bench is predictable as a shooter at 44% and 7+ pts/game and he could be a target when the Jackrabbits are on offense. The yotes will also play a very short bench due to numbers/injuries. Yotes are averaging less than 70 points per game and the Jackrabbits were held to 68 against Nevada. I give the Jackrabbit offense the edge today.

I’ve watched a bunch of their games and totally agree about Umude. Though he can disappear for stretches he is definitely one of the league’s top-10 players. His mid-range jumpers are about unstoppable and his shot blocking ability impacts the game. If he’s have a good game and gets some help from a couple shooters they can be a problem for anyone. They’re not going to beat any of the top teams in a 5-game series but they’re still dangerous.

I’d expect big numbers from Daum today. With Johns out they have a big problem.

The Coyotes probably will go deeper into their bench than the Jacks, at least while the game outcome is in doubt. In addition to Umade, Burch-Manning and Peterson probably will be the guys to stop. The Jacks' guards should be able to hold Kelley, Simpson, Armstrong & co. in check.

7 players is likely the number if Jech gets off the bench. 30 minutes of bench against WIU with 4 minutes to Jech and 26 to Armstrong. 40 minutes in the blowout of Denver with 2 reserves getting 7 minutes together and 10 minutes to Jech and Armstrong 23 minutes. I would take 4-10 minutes of Dentlinger over Jech in any game. Umude, Burch-Manning, & Peterson will be first with dribble drive from the guards later in clock. Kelley is the only starter not in double figures.

Would like to see a blowout and extra minutes for the bench today. One game in the next 2 weeks after today leading up to the SLT is a big break for a team with a short bench. We have looked fatigued at times late in the year IMO.

Winning 3 games in four days playing 6 guys won’t be easy. We need every edge we can get. Getting the one seed and not having to play Omaha or FW(likely) in the semis is huge. Not only are both teams solid and very capable of beating us, the pace of the game is EXTREMELY fast. Our starters playing nearly 80 freaking minutes in 24 hours at that pace would likely be a problem. Big week ahead I’ll be watching SL scores/standings closely.

Just win. Man, I would be disappointed to gut out that game Thursday night, and then lay an egg today.

USD will be motivated, and they are playing better of late.

Might have to rethink the zone D. USD hitting 40% of threes as of late

Playing a zone against a team that plays all guards and has been shooting well. Add in that it slows the game down and it’s really dumb. Only thing it will do is keep starters more fresh. I don’t get it at all.

Otz is a moron for playing it. It gives USD a chance.

plus refs are letting Petterson camp in the lane with out a 3 second call. USD seemed ready for the zone. We need to pressure the passes and close out more they are getting good looks.

it worked at USD but its not working tonight. Time to make an adjustment on the zone. its a soft zone at that. must be waiting for 2nd half to play defense again.

Our defense is to give USD open threes and see if they miss enough of them. Same non-effective zone that we ran in 2017. I simply don't get it.

Then Refs get suckered again on a flop against Daum, its crazy this far into the year Refs are falling for that so much.
