A great person and athlete. In high school, he never got opportunity to play in State B. Always in shadow of the Jim Marking coached Hayti Redbirds, who used the Lake Norden gym for their home games. Jim and Don later worked together guiding SDSU Jacks. Hayti btw made it 4 times to state tournament 1952-1956. I don’t recall what happened in 1957. Marking moved on to Watertown HS where coached some great teams before becoming an assistant to Jim Iverson.
For some of you "youngsters" on the board, you might want to know more about Don. He still holds the record for the most free throws made in one game (22 of 28). It was against Prairie View A&M which was led by the future NBA star, Zelmo Beaty. He is third on the SDSU list of free throw made in a career. "Jake" is still ranked 9th in scoring average - 19.8 points per game.
But here's the kicker - at the time Don came to then SDSC, freshmen were not allowed on the varsity squad. So, he only played three years. Finally, Don was a fantastic long distance shooter but played well before the 3-point line became standard fare. He wouldn't be in Daum's rarified air, but he would have easily been in the top five.
RIP Don Jacobsen, a Jackrabbit and South Dakota High School basketball legend.

I would like to see SDSU do more to celebrate the history of their sports. It seems that if you don't have a program/media guide you wouldn't know many of the names that the "old timers" throw out. I attended SDSU from 1995-2000 and there are a lot of names, even from the 80s, that are foreign to me.
