Re: 2019 Recruits
We now have an offer out to Douglas Wilson (6'7" 210 lbs) out of Kirkwood CC (originally from Des Moines). I put this in the 2019 recruiting forum because I assume he'll play his sophomore year at Kirkwood CC, but technically if he was a qualifier out of HS he could join the Jackrabbits for the 2018-19 season.
His stats suggest he's a true post (14.1 points/game, 6.6 reb/game, 1.9 blocks/game, 69.2 FG% with 0 3pt attempts, 46.2% from FT)
The little film on him from HUDL (HS highlights) shows that he is pretty athletic.

Re: 2019 Recruits
Caleb Grill can shoot! His range looks to extend to the NBA arc. It's a relatively quick release and he has decent length and jumps well with his shot. His style of shooting is distinct. After looking through it a second time, I knew it reminded me of someone. Larry Bird had a similar style with the high finish with both of his hands. Many will drop their non-dominant hand after the release. Both shoot with their feet strongly finishing to the left. While it is common to have your feet aim slightly towards the pivot foot side, both face strongly left. Both shoot with a slight fade to their shot. That does create a tick more space between the shooter and the defender, but you'd typically not coach that. Grill has a bit more spring to his jump shot. That quick release, with excellent vertical bounce and even a slight fade will help him continue to be a strong shooter at the next level. He also compensates very well when fading left or right. When you come off a screen or even while on the move, it can be difficult to have your momentum carry into a true vertical jump shot. By compensating his aim in the opposite direction, his shot carries true despite his body moving slightly left or right. I also like that he doesn't need a pick and roll to get a quality shot off. He had many clips where he set up the defender by moving towards or at a tangent to the hoop and then quickly pulled up to knock down a 15' to 18' jumper.
One of my favorite clips is at the 32 second portion of the video. It appears to be a simple little mid-range hook shot or almost a floater. What I like is how quickly he caught and released that shot. He caught the ball with his body facing away from the hoop, yet he knew where his defender was from his lower body and off shooting hand feeling the space being created. When he releases the shot he finished high and he was very close to the base line. That is a very difficult shot to hit. You don't have the backboard to help gauge depth of field and you are at a difficult distance to shoot. There are many excellent shooters who can't consistently shoot from this range, and it's even more difficult from the baseline. You have to have lots of feel for the game to hit those shots. Nate had that with his floater. It's what made him so tough to defend.
Now it is easy to look at a promo video and get excited. After all, when's the last time you've seen an athlete include a clip where they miss a shot. That being said, he appears to have strong mechanics, great bounce and a very quick/high release to his jump shot. If this kid grows another inch or two, he'd be very difficult to defend as a shooter and he appears to have quick enough hands and feet to defend at the next level. When he dribbles he handles the ball a little high, but I think that can be fixed. Excellent recruit to have on campus!

In my (admittedly limited) interactions with Coach Henderson, just want to add that I find him to be just an absolute great guy. He's top notch.
All my interactions with the new staff have been outstanding. Coach Otz has put together a good staff.
