    Holy analysis paralysis!

What is so hard to figure out here? When our team plays with intensity, in particularly on the defensive end, they can beat anyone in the Summit. I don't care if it is man-to-man, zone, prevent, run-and-hide, or whatever other you may want. When they want it bad enough, they get it done.

Next up is Western Illinois. We played lackluster defense at their place to say the least. I fully expect a different effort level tomorrow night.

Well said. And Sometimes, even when you play with intensity, you get beat. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. Looking forward to the SLT and a 4 or 5 seed.

Frankly, at this point I would just assume the Jacks get a 7 or 8 seed even though that would mean more heartburn down the stretch. Always nice to have the Sunday bye.

OBTW, your points are right on. Sometimes you have to tip the cap to the other team. Other times you are lucky to steal a W. See the Jacks in last year's SLT for the lucky part.

Bottom line, leave it ALL on the floor and then live with the result.

I expect the team to be on a great trajectory at this time. They handled Ft Wayne at home and Omaha at Omaha in 2 of the last 3 games. The team seems to be coming together and winning out at home would make 6 conference wins. That could be the 5-6 seed for the tourney. If they can grab a win on the road, the 4 or 5 seed would be likely. The Saturday game would be nice for the rest, but it could also be the game for the end of the season playing a team that comes to the tourney looking to bounce the Jackrabbits early like the bison or yotes. Expect Frost to be ready for Jackrabbit basketball this week. It is crunch time.

Zone defenses are not successful only when you have top 100 type recruits. The success of a zone is not dependent on whether your team has better more talented players than the other team - it depends on how effective and efficient it is. Ensuring you have the types of players to make it successful is a plus. SDSU may not have the types of players it needs to be successful in a 1-3-1 zone but they sure don't have the players t be successful in a M-to-M defense either.

Look at my other recent post - Marquette recently beat #1 ranked Villanova with a 1-3-1 as its primary defense.

Your change-up analogy is wrong here. There are a lot of off-speed pitchers who make their living throwing in the high '80s - low '90s. Greg Maddux is currently in the HOF because of his slider and change-up.
            Nah.

I hear what you are saying. I just don't think that there is any real clear cut favorites in the league this year. The better way to put it would be to say that if the Jacks play well there isn't anyone that scares me in SF.

The top 100 comment was meant to illustrate that there are so few players available that have the ability to play the bottom of the 2-3 effectively night in and night out, and you have to have a top notched, reputable program to pull in these players because everyone wants them. The competition SDSU plays against a lot aren't top 100 players because they can't shoot, it's because they are often less physically gifted than the high major players. It's about having 7'0"+ of length closing out on shooters and skying in the air for rebounds.

Consistently effective zone defense isn't about equal length and athleticism, it's about elite length and athleticism.

You can have successful games and/or stretches while playing exclusively zone defense in college basketball with less than ideal athletes, but it's really hard to maintain success. I'll reiterate that I am not anti-zone defense, I'm against it being played exclusively with rare exceptions (Syracuse). Eventually, college-level coaches are going to make adjustments to the defense, like crashing the weak-side glass with numbers or putting their best shooters in the corners. All of a sudden you have nobody with the ability to contest these good shooters or anyone to rise up for the boards on the weak side against a numerical disadvantage. Now you have a choice of either making an adjustment or letting the opponent set a school record in 3 pointers made and beat you on the glass by double digits (sound familiar?).

First off, we don't get the athletes Marquette gets either, and secondly, yah, the zone can win you a game you're not supposed, but a lot of it is predicated on how well the other team is shooting, not how you made them shoot. The issue is consistency, and when you are being dictated by your opponent instead of the other way around, it's hard to be consistent.

What? Greg Maddux threw fastballs all the time. Yah, he had great off speed stuff and wouldn't have been a Hall of Fame pitcher without it, but never in his career did he abandon his fastball.

This is an SDSU forum. Using Maddux as an example for this type of pitcher instead of Brad Radke? Shame on both of you. Negative reps all around.

Yah, that example would have been a "home run!"
