CEDAR CITY -- Lacey Yates scored well on the inside and Casey Cooke did so from the outside as Southern Utah's women defeated Centenary 75-59 Monday night. Each finished with 15 points.
Yates had six points and Cooke had five as the Thunderbirds (2-1 Mid-Con, 11-3 overall) took control with a 16-5 run early in the first half. Shauntel Garrett started things with a basket to break a 6-6 tie. Yates had two baskets and two free throws and Garrett and Katy Cooke scored before Casey Cooke got a layup and a 3-point basket for a 25-11 T-Bird lead with 4:28 left in the first half.
"We were hungry," Yates said of the fast start. "We didn't like losing to Oral Roberts at home (a week ago). I think that intensity, that effort carried us through tonight."
SUU had a 30-14 lead at halftime despite shooting just 35 percent from the field. The T-Birds held the Ladies (1-2 Mid-Con, 3-11) to just 17 percent.
Katy Cooke scored six of her 10 points as the T-Birds opened the second half with a 13-5 spurt to build a 43-19 advantage with 14:59 remaining in the game.
However, Louise Smyth scored nine of her 13 points as Centenary closed within 48-39 with 8:25 to go.
Janis Beal helped the Thunderbirds regain control as she had a pair of 3-point baskets during a 12-0 run. Yates, Garrett and Casey Cooke also had baskets in that run.
"We weren't patient in the second half," SUU coach Joe Hillock said of the Ladies' run. "Centenary did a good job of changing defenses on us."
That run proved to be enough for the win as neither team was able to sustain another spurt.
Joining Yates and Cooke in double figures were Beal and Katy Cooke with 10 points each. Garrett and Julia Allender each had eight points. Smyth led Centenary. Alexis Pettway had 11 and Holli Wilkins added 10.
"I was particularly proud of Casey tonight," Hillock said. "She took her time and stayed in shots. Lacey and Hut did an outstanding job guarding Pettway."
Hut is Sarah Hutton, who struggled offensively. She scored just six points but led the T-Birds with nine rebounds. Centenary had a 50-39 edge on the boards.
"Our rebounding has been not so great lately," Yates said. "But we have taken it upon ourselves to rebound better."
Both teams shot much better in the second half. SUU hit 46 percent of its shots and finished at 40 percent for the game. Centenary hit 47 percent and finished at 33 percent for the game.
Southern Utah now heads onto the road for four straight games in the Mid-Continent Conference. The T-Birds' next home game is not until Jan. 31.
