Hard to run if you can't rebound, and we're going to have trouble rebounding when the opposition has a 7'2 and four 6'10 players (as will many other teams). Playing Daum in the middle and Telly at the 4 against that kind of size won't end well. Fortunately the Summit is not a big man oriented league, and we saw a year ago that Daum can play the 5 very effectively there. But we will need the perimeter shooting to heat up to prevent teams totally selling out to stop Mike.

Totally agree. I'm not one to set my hair on fire after two games but those two items are concerning.
Spot on. About has crappy a start to the season as possible.
Fortunately, Its all about league play, getting a top 2 seed for the conference tourney and then winning the tourney to get into the NCAA. Summit league is a one tourney team conference and nobody is getting an at large regardless of the OOC season.

We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.
The season is off to a rough start, but there are bright spots - the aggressive play of Telly and King, in particular. Flatten shows promise, too. I think the Jacks will have to learn to play fast because the deeper they go into the shot clock, the worse shots they seem to get. Defenses with big players just settle in.
A few thoughts a little perspective on the start to the season.
Minutes by class last night:
Freshman - 29
Sophomores - 91
Juniors- 59
Seniors - 21 - (Only Hess and Orris playing in their 2nd game with the team)
Coach - ROOKIE!
This team is very very young in addition to many of even the veteran players playing their first games as a Jackrabbit.
We played on the ROAD in CALI where even our best/veteran teams have not looked good to say the least and set this board on fire the past few years
UC Irvine is picked FIRST in their league and a pretty good basketball team
- Sure it didn't look pretty these first 2 games but their are many factors working against us right now. This team will look much better at home(as in the past) and much better against weaker/average opponents. Everyone is young and/or new so some time to find an identity and mesh is going to be needed.
Seems to me a Division I coach should be smart enough to adapt his system to the players he has until he gets a chance to bring his own type of player in. But that's just me. B Ball isn't even on radar for the most part until football season is over.

Yes this make fans happy this year, what about next year and the following year? Apparently he has a system that works with right people. He grabbed those out there who were available: It's unfair to expect TJ to pick up where Nagy left off.
#1 They did lose 4 guards... Senior PG, Senior Combo Guard, The top Backup for both those positions, and a 3 year starter at the 3 spot.
#2 We are replacing them with a lot of young guys, and new guys...and they are running a new system. Patience, Grasshopper.
#3 They will shoot better. Sure, it's troubling to shoot poorly, but they'll get more comfortable. There are guys who can shoot on this team.
#4 We have played some decent teams to start off. Personally, I'd rather see us struggle early with new coach and new players, than come in "on fire" and think it's easy. It ain't easy. It ain't supposed to be easy. Get to work, boys.
#5 As fans... have a little faith. We may NOT have the best record this year. That's ok. There's a lot of change going on. As long as they progress, and improve, and are in the mix of things at the end of the year that's what matters.
#6 Waaaay to early to jump on the "we stink" bandwagon. Just like when the Vikings fans were going to the Super Bowl when they started 5-0. It's going to be a process.
I would believe the players are capable of running, but it appears that defense has taken a back seat to something else as much as anything. Gentry had 2 TO in the first half and none in the second half. Daum had 7 TO's as they continued to pound the ball low while the coverage was there. 29% FG is most disappointing while going 5-30 beyond the arc. Flatten shot a bit cold, but he was a promising player out there tonight. At least the team had a trip to the west coast and they will be ready to get Coach Otz a win against Wayne State in Brookings before they hit the road again. I am looking forward to the shooters getting on target and seeing a game that scores in the 60's or even the 70's before the season gets too far along.
I have been concerned about our defense since the day Otz was hired. Everything we've been hearing has been how we are going to play extremely fast on offense. Not one thing about defense. I know defense isn't sexy but it's a necessity at the mid-major level. Rebounding has to be almost as important.
I think playing fast will make it even tougher to compete against P5 teams. That's just me though.

And if we are going to be playing fast, shouldnt we be scoring more than 53 and 58 points.

Well, they said playing fast, not playing high scoring......
I kid of course for now. thought there was also talk of pressing the ball more on D also. Not sure we are doing much of that. I am sure things are only being implemented as they are able to pick it up.
I wonder if people are freaking out a little is because some of the sloppy play and scores are a little reminiscent of the transition days for the mens team. took a long time to get over that stuff and have some really good success, but sliding back will bring up some dark memories for many.
I am sure the team is disappointed how it has started, but like most fans, probably know they have a lot of growing to do. Conference play will be a better indicator of how this team is performing. Even the last 2 Nagy teams, it was a growth process for those teams as well.
