Late surge of free throws key for Jackrabbits against UND
BROOKINGS - For 10 minutes, they looked like the Jackrabbits of old, or at least the ones from two weeks ago.
Easy layups off concise passes. Aggressive rebounding and defense. Sound decision making. Typical South Dakota State basketball.
That's when the perceived breakthrough dissolved into the kind of play that had put SDSU on its first three-game losing streak in four years.
After turning an unexpectedly close game into a 20-point lead midway through the second half, the Jackrabbits nearly let one slip away to North Dakota on Friday. Making 7 of 8 free throws in the final two minutes helped SDSU snap its skid, winning 87-79 at Frost Arena.
"When you get a lead like that, you should be smart with the basketball, and we weren't," said coach Scott Nagy, whose 11th-ranked Jackrabbits improved to 18-3 and 2-3 in the North Central Conference. "I just thought we had a lot of guys who were putting the ball on the floor when they shouldn't have, taking shots we shouldn't have been taking. Instead of working the ball and trying to get layups, we're taking bad shots and turning the ball over.
"I'm very disappointed in how we handled the lead. Overall, I thought we at least moved in the right direction."
Leading by three to start the second half, SDSU exploded with a 24-5 run in which the players seemed to regain their confidence and crispness that helped them win their first 17 games of the season.
But the Sioux (10-8, 1-4), who connected on 10 of 27 3-pointers on the night, stormed back with a furious 18-6 run of their own in just over five minutes. Back-to-back baskets by UND's Evan Lindahl, who had a team-best 20 points, made it 77-69 with 2:23 to go.
In the game's final two minutes, the Sioux pared the Jackrabbit lead to six three times. The last instance came with 20 seconds to play, as UND's Jade Jahner made three free throws after being fouled by SDSU's Joe Green as Jahner was shooting a 3-pointer.
"We did some good tings, but we need to play 40 minutes of soild basketball," Sioux coach Rich Glas said.
SDSU junior Andy Moeller, who led the Jacks with 21 points and eight rebounds, cooly swished a pair of free throws a second later to keep UND at bay.
Green had 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench for SDSU, while Derrick Schantz scored 15. The Jackrabbits host North Dakota State tonight.
