Re: Big Sky vs. Mid-Con. from a B-Ball viewpoint?

I have been doing some speculating on our conference possibilities now that our D1 move is official (Oh Yea !)
We've discussed the Mid Con dividing into North / South divisions. What about the Gateway and Missouri Valley expanding into a divisionional situation? I think we agree that these are the best conferences in the mix-(right now),also the longest shot to get into, The best-talent wise, and national recognition wise. Having said all that, It seems like all conferences are moving toward larger (12 team)formats to promote a championship game situation at the end of the season.
NDSU and SDSU would give the Missouri Valley 12 schools. West- (NDSU, SDSU, UNI, Creighton, Drake, Wichita) East-(Bradley,Evansville,SIU,Ill. St,Ind. St.,SW Mo. St.)
In football the addition of SDSU, NDSU, and UNC would give tha Gateway 11 schools...
    WEST-
    UNI
    NDSU
    SDSU
    UNC
    SW MO. ST.
    East-
    Youngstown St.
    S. Illinois
    W. Kentucky
    W. Illinois
    Ill. St
    Ind. St
I know this is a longshot, but I was just playing around and was wondering about the possibilities...

In regards to my previous post, I realize that with the D1AA football playoffs a "Conference Championship" game is not realistic. I was speculating as to general conference expansion of the Gateway Conference, trying to consolidate the geography... Just wanted to clarify.

The Gateway conference does not want to be at ten or more members. They want to be at nine, so everyone gets four home and four away games a year. The MoValley, although they have been approached by NDSU/SDSU, is supposedly looking to accept more "upscale" teams to increase their RPI for BB.

All the Jack fans should check out the old DI Decison threads from the Bisonville site. We had a lot of discussions about conferences. Some of them even have a lot of comedy relief from a sioux fan (siouxrock).

We talked about 12 team football conf. on E.Griz.com. You can make it work with a Championship game if you don't play the entire conf. You would play all the teams in your div. every year. You would play 3 or 4 from the other div. in a round robin format. It is complicated at the I AA level with the playoff but you can make it work. This is one that I am not sure how I feel about it, but I bring it up for the sake of discussion.

Texas, off subject but what can you tell me about the Texas State Bobcats?

          Go State!

            bisonguy,

I started to go through some of the old threads and you guys have talked a ton about Conf. How about helping a travel partner out, and telling me what the Bison opinion is so I can get some sleep.

            Go Jacks!

              Bisonguy,
Those threads are priceless-Thanks for the suggestion, I'll need another week to go through them all. It looks like conference affiliation has been talked to death, but I'm with 89rabbit... whats the opinion now in Fargo?

                89Rabbit,
SW Texas St. -San Marcos, TX about 45 minutes north of San Antonio, I think they have about 20,000 students-but I'm not positive of that figure. I have never seen them play football (they play in the Southland Conf.) but I checked out their football stadium a couple of months ago, Its nice... Double decked on both sides, but small, I think it might seat 9-10,000. I heard a rumor that they might explore D1A football-I would be shocked if they went that route, We love football in Texas but I'm not sure they could make that jump work. They usually have 1-2 pretty big D1A schools on their schedule every year (I think they played Minnesota last year) although I havent looked at it this year. They are only about 30 minutes South of Austin... home of the Longhorns. Thats about all I know about them... Hope it helps.

Thanks for the info, Texas_Jacks_Fan. I was chatting with a Bobcat on a different board and I didn't have a feel for what kind of school he was representing. San Marcos, TX isn't that George Strait's home town?

                    89Rabbit,
It might be, I'm not sure. I'm a transplant from Flandreau SD, So I'm a little rusty on my celebrity home towns. One other note on SW Tex. St. They have always been pretty average in basketball and football since I have been in Texas (5 years) It seems like they open up this year with a big 12 school-I need to check out their website.

We didn't beat the conference scenarios to death, but we did beat them senseless ;D. I think most Bison fans are elated that we now have a dedicated travel partner. The MoValley/Gateway conference would be my first choice, followed by the Big Sky and then the Mid-Cont. I don't think we discussed the Horizon much, so I don't know much about the conference. Supposedly the MoValley is in the position to raise their RPI, so they might steal the best of the Mid-Cont. or Horizon. Somebody had emailed the Gateway chair about NDSU, and he said they were only looking to add one team. SDSU and NDSU can still go with the new FB conference and something else. It sounds like the talks will get a little more serious now that SDSU has declared their intent. I will be happy wherever NDSU and SDSU end up. I just hope they end up somewhere soon, so they will be able to fill out schedules.

The Mid-Con has a new (better) looking web site.  The new commissioner seems to be having a positive effect on the leauge.  I also noticed that Oakland beat the Horizon's preseason favorite at the Dell BCA Classic. They play Xavier tonight for the Championship of the tourney.  Also UMKC takes on the Gophers tonight in the Pre-Season NIT.  Here is the web site.

I think that the finest conference for SDSU would be the Mo Valley, although I agree with most posters that it would be a longshot at best. I understand they are looking for more upscale teams, but there might not be any available because they may be looking for a more upscale conferences. If we can't get in there, I'd prefer the Mid-Con over the Big Sky. I really think SDSU, however, would be in a position to compete with the best teams in the BSC pretty quickly, which might actually be for the best. I live for the day the Jacks take the floor in the big dance.

IMO...If SDSU would have been in the Mid-Con last year, we would have seen that "big dance" dream fulfilled. We're going to be there sooner than you think.
