And then, as was the case with Minnesota last season, if the Jacks and USD come in and win, the s*it really hits the fan and the number of butts in the seats for future games go down. Fans will come to see their team get beat by what they perceive to be "good" opponents but lose a few games to what they see as "lesser" teams and they will start staying away in droves.
This is what i mean...the fun side of collegiate sports...shocking all the "experts" and doing what others think you cannot....love it.

It's fun when you are in the underdog role - not so much if you're the P-5 team. It's just like when the Jacks play D II teams. If you win, the reaction is "Well, you should beat those teams". If you lose, all hell breaks loose.

I think a lot of it just depends on what type of coach you are.
AJ plays at least one if not two really solid DII teams every year. They are local NSIC teams. He expects to beat them and wants a little challenge.
Bono wrestles against Augie, Northern and DWU(??) every year. He thinks it's good for South Dakota. We might lose at a weight or two(especially to Augie) but those teams can't hang with us. I think he lets all of his wrestlers get out on the mat with the better ones going against the better competition but could be wrong on that.
The Augie game would have been good last year (lets not rehash that) but most years we should beat them. I know them and Northern are solid teams every year but we should be a step ahead of them. I know we can lose a recruit or two by losing to them but I think that Schilling, Jansen and Richter were probably DI players. They might not have started for us but they were better than some of the players on SDSU's bench. It is just my opinion that they wanted to be stars and could do that at Augie.
There was a big difference between Nagy and AJ. If the SDSU men were playing against DWU or DSU, you could just about stay home. The other team would play a zone and SDSU would pass the ball around the perimeter and launch up a 3-pointer. Nagy didn't want to run any plays because he didn't want to give other teams something to scout from. AJ wanted to play it as a practice and see how his team looked.
When we went DI, our women were instantly competitive so I thought that it was easier to compete on the women's side than the mens side. Our men had several horrible years to get DI talent (or so I thought). Our women still recruit mainly SD and Minn where the men reach out more. That is why this stuff confuses me. I guess it is just that AJ is that good!

I believe that the women's games against DII teams have always been exhibition games since we went DI, not so on the men's side. Exhibition games don't count in your season record.

The last WBB DII game in season was 11/11/2011 against St Cloud. There were a few DII games in the transition years prior to the full conference schedule. AJ did schedule a bunch of P5 teams in those years as well and he had the women in the WNIT 2 years prior to qualifying for the NCAA tourney. It is certainly a more level field in the WBB. When was the last P5 MBB in Frost? That would take some research. The mid major MBB teams need to get their schedules fixed to help each other.......but that will only be on table after they get some money games from the P5 teams.

Easy to feel that way as a fan. Not so much as an administrator or coach whose livelihood depends on the outcome of these "games."

Actually it's not really that easy to feel that way even as a fan if you've got even the slightest idea of how college basketball works.

Yes,we'll never get to play any team of significance because that's the way basketball really works, guess we can all stop dreaming and wasting everyone's time with such silly notions now. Thanks Montana Rabbit for sharing your thoughts and for getting us all back to reality.

Geez, let's all go jump off a bridge or something. Better yet, the Jackrabbit men should become a team of consequence. Smaller schools have succeeded doing that. (Butler, for example.)

I've been critical of the non-conference home scheduling for some time. But here's the deal. The Jacks don't lose at home...like hardly ever. Something like 63-3 the last 5 years or so I believe. Add in the fact that you don't just fly into Brookings and fly back out. I'd imagine a lot of phone conversations start and end with "No thanks..."

                        You're not wrong.

But, the reason the P5 conference teams won't visit Brookings has more to do with economics than the fear of losing. Let's see, give up a home date (and the revenue generated) to play a game against a mid-major that is really tough at home and if they happen to lose that game could affect the likelihood of said team making the NCAA tourney (and the associated $). Doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize it's not a positive play for a P5 team.

                          Re: 2016-2017 Schedule

The problem at hand with all "high viewership" college sports is it comes down to money. That's really sad. Secondly, as many have pointed out, another big fear is getting their butts beat by a relatively unknown (on national scale). The committee that selects the field for the BIG DANCE takes that into account. SDSU is dangerous, if not lethal, at home, and that doesn't bode well for the Jacks in lining up out of conference games.

As you know, I'm a huge fan of your new coach, and I'll tell you right now he's having trouble talking to anyone about coming to Frost. Major dilemma. And this is a guy that has connections all over the country and is extremely well liked. Coaching is a fraternity, and by and large, they try to help one another....but no coach at Iowa State or Minnesota, or Nebraska is going to bring in a team to Brookings and get beat. It's simply not going to happen.

I think the best option for either SD school is to do home and homes with schools of their caliber, and maybe a 2 for 1 with a higher rated mid major. As far as Washington coming in...no way in hell. It's wrong, but it's the way of the world.

Sounds like something one of our friends from ORU might say, LOL. Also kind of true in the college basketball world.

There are 3 very solid mid-majors coming to Sioux Falls to play SDSU this year. I think we could get a major in the right situation (money/schedule/connections) to come to the Pentagon. With the large local fanbase, somebody like Iowa/Minnesota/Nebraska at the Denny is also in the realm of possibility IMO. Iowa to Brookings? Zero chance, no way, not going to happen.
