    Re: GDT: SDSU @ FGCU

I thought the injury updates merit their own thread so I've moved the posts from this thread discussing Marshall and Flatten to the new "Injury Updates" thread.

      Re: GDT: SDSU @ FGCU

I watched the entire game and am amazed at the negativity on this thread. They won a tough road game against a good team. All I hear is about turnovers, "killed on the boards", "painful etc. Not sure what everyone expects. The jacks are 10-2. We were outrebounded 41-39 and had 4 fewer turnovers than FGCU. It was a physical game and beyond Daum we couldn't shoot. But go back and watch the game and tell me how many uncontested 3's did we get? 2-3 tops after Daum when their big wanted nothing to do with coming out of the paint. Many complain about Nagy and his negativity about the team. This board isn't much different. Some used the term "grind" and that's a great way to describe this game. When playoffs and tourney time come, winning this type of game the way we did it will benefit us down the road much more than even the ISU game when we shot so well.

In the words of Mike Tice, "relax and enjoy the season"!!
Nothing better than "motorboating" the Gophers!

Good advice. I will do that, but I can not speak for everyone who posts here. I think this was a big win. We got a great team. George Marshall elgibility is over at the end of the season or does have one more semester? Either way life goes on and we should not be so depended on one player.

If you go back and combine the numbers that Theisen and Daum have produced from the post position, it is surprising to see what they have done. Cody Larson was a very good player, but I like the way the offense is running this season when the ball doesn't always have to run through the post. And when it does go there, it gets moved out quickly rather than spending 10 seconds trying to create shots down low. It will be interesting to see what happens a year from now when the offense will not be so guard oriented. I look for Daum to move to the 4 in a Dykstra-type role and Telly to move out to the 3, which is probably his natural position.

Perhaps Nagy's glass half full personality is rubbing off on the fans? I watched the entire game. FGCU is extremely young but very athletic. Didn't take long to see how quick and long they were. That was a very nice win and good to play them early in the season because they are only going to get better as young as they are. #25 is a stud that could play for anyone.

              Re: GDT: SDSU @ FGCU

I would like to see more of Theisen and Daum together when they other team is big and push Telly more to the 3 with Bittle. The thing I really like about this team is the versatility. It's really a nice skill set on a team in a sport where "athletes" are supposedly valued with their "higher upside". Our guys don't jump out of the gym overall but they can shoot and run an offense. I thought the FGCU broadcast team did a nice job of bringing that to light.

FGCU's main 9 are 2 seniors, 2 juniors, 2 So and 3 fr. SDSU played 3 seniors, 3 soph, 2 freshmen. Not that much younger than the SDSU roster.

This is pretty much the definition of mid-major basketball.

Every few years, you might get lucky with a post player who can dominate in the paint via their athletic ability (Larson), skill (Bjorklund), or combination (Keith Benson). If you have one of those players, you use them pretty extensively. However, the majority of those types end up playing at more visible programs - so mid-majors end up being guard oriented most of the time.

IMO, unless somebody on the roster gets drastically better in the post, we will still be guard oriented next year.

Okay their best players are freshman and sophs. That much I do know.

And unless the announcers are wrong they said only 1 returning starter played vs SDSU last year.

I think the world of Scott Nagy ever since he showed up at an after-game party with coach Jim Thorson. I think that was about 1988. I seen this young man's hair go from Jet black to black-greyish and he is still the man as far as I am concerned. He has got his job for the rest of his life, but I am just a fan who may not count. He knows the game.
I agree with your comments about the game. Basketball continues to be interesting at SDSU. This was a big win.

Not sure it's mid major basketball. I can't name one team in college basketball that runs through the post. It's the shift in the entire game to more guard oriented play. The rules to a degree even dicate it with shot clocks etc Very few if any dominate centers in college basketball and those that do tend to dominate on the defensive end primarily. Last year was an anamoly with Okafor and Town's but beyond those two there just weren't a lot of posts you'd run your offense through. The jacks will continue to run a motion offense for years to come I'm guessing as the game continues to evolve.

It's become a guard's game. No sense in fighting it.

This! It was nice to see Dam and Theisen in the game together as can't remember seeing that much prior to this game.

After reading the FGCU summary of the game, interesting to note FGCU ranked number 19th in the nation rebounding the bb.
