Parks may get minutes or Bittle may get minutes there. Whoever plays point will have the trust of Coach Nagy. Marshall may march into the position at the end of the first semester, but I think the first part of the season will find the backup point and if Parks should excel as a scorer at this level, he may push Bittle to a SF. It is a reach, but it is possible. If Horstman continues with his improvement and remains healthy, it will be hard to push him to the bench. The freshman/rsfreshmen will have some ability to fill the 4 and backup 3. If Devine moves to 4, then we will need a backup for Larson. Larson and Devine could split the post most games. The IPFW Forbes days may require more beef to back up.
I like Horstman off of the bench because of his versatility. If he get's more reliable with his 3's, and he's healthy, he certainly could start. He just doesn't seem to bring much when he's on the floor. Like Broman this year, they don't hurt you but they don't help you too much either.

Re: Next year
I wonder how much of our game will change based on how our personnel has changed in recent years? For much of Nate's career, our team was built on spreading the floor and allowing Nate lanes to create offense. He created so many opportunities when he wasn't shooting by either kicking it out to three point shooters or dumping it off when the help defense came. This really created opportunities for many of our three point shooters, specifically White/Carlson/Dykstra. When Nate left, we still had our core of three point shooters that our offense had been built around, specifically Dykstra at the stretch 4. He was the biggest mismatch we had in most games and was on prime display in the closing moments at Denver this year.
I just can't see us having an offense that features either a group of perimeter shooters or a stretch 4 specialist. Daum obviously has the tools to develop into that position, but I just can't see him playing a significant role as a stretch 4 next year as a true freshman. I know Dykstra did it, but he did so because of his elite ability and out of nessisity. We did not have a well stocked front line group when he came and shooting the 3 was the easiest way for him to contribute. We are much more stocked going into this next year with Larson and Devine returning and with a redshirt Doyle waiting for his opportunity.
So the question I have is how will we fit a lineup together. We know Larson will be the featured post player, but he is not conventional big bodied, back to the rim post player. While he is not a Dykstra type player that will stroke the three to open up the rest of his game, Larson does have outstanding athletic ability for a strong post player. Last night I was watching a classic BIG TEN game from 2009 of Wisconsin against Florida State. Wisconsin featured a nice blend of perimeter players that could score from deep or drive to the hoop. They also featured a future SDSU assistant coach who was an athletic post player that played from behind the arc to the hole. Joe Krabbenhoft played as a 6'7" post that would routinely do pick and rolls from the arc, receive passes in a 4-out motion offense beyond the arc, and slash to the hole with back door cuts. To play at Wisconsin, you had to play defense first and offensive roles would fit player skills.
I could easily see our offense utilize Devine in the post and allow Larson to play outside-in as a 4. He will not be the threat that Dykstra was from beyond the arc, but he has athletic ability and ball handling skills to blow by most bigs. While he would not be a consistant threat to hurt you from deep, defenses would still need to come out to help off of pick and rolls. If he is setting picks in a motion offense on the perimeter, it will create opportunities for our guards/small forwards to have open looks if Larson's man does not come out. If they come out, it will provide opportunities for Larson to roll to the hoop with his athletic superiority. Krabbenhoft had an outstanding career for the Badgers in this role and I think Larson has even more potential based on his bigger frame with his athletic ability.
What I really like about this is that spreading the floor with Larson and Devine/Doyle on the court will allow us to still have two large rebounders and defenders. It will also allow other players to develop their skills by opening the court. I think our two transfers in Parks and Marshall would thrive in this offense. It would also create options for Bittle to use his complete game, Broman to be a shooter first, and allow our plethora of small forwards lanes to drive or spot up for jumpers.
This will take time, and obviously with all of the new faces it will be a work in progress. But it allows us to fit an offense to our players' abilities and not have to fit players into rolls that others have played in recent years. While I'd like to pat myself on the back for solving next year's offense, I'm am looking forward to what Nagy develops as the true professional he is. It is still fun to have the forum and dream what will happen next year! The good thing about my dreams is that it still has us playing in the final game in Sioux Falls with a full house and a trip to the dance waiting. It will just feature a new team wearing the Jackrabbit blue/black/gray/white....

I hope Larson puts in a lot of ball handling work this offseason. It looks like he would need to improve that part of his game a lot to handle the roll you mentioned above. He lost the ball numerous times when he tried to take a dribble in the paint last year. It really stood out to me in the Summit Tourney. If Larson can improve that and his shooting touch he will definitely be first-team all conference.

Re: Next year
That's the newest big thing... There were a couple of others in Fred's time at ISU- Anderson who came from NIU, and one of the Michigan St. guards. I totally agree with Witness. Heck, even Augie has used it successfully. Iowa backup Stokes is one of those guys - 6'8 or something - if you had a 1 year scholly, I'd throw it his way.
