    Re: D I opponents

    Continuing to play "What's My Schedule" . . .

Here was Northern Colorado's men's schedule last year:
Eight D-I schools plus two games against Utah Valley State, a provisional D-I school (not counting the exhibition at Colorado State):

    Vs. Western State
    At Adams State
    Colorado Mines
    Kendall College
    Colorado Christian
    Regis
    At CSU-Pueblo
    Vs. Mesa State
    At Texas State (D1)
    At Colorado Mines
    At Colorado Christian
    At Eastern Michigan (D1)
    At Denver (D1)
    Adams State
    Colorado-Colorado Springs
    At Colorado (D1)
    At Iowa State (D1)
    At Regis
    Utah Valley State (D1 provisional)
    At Loyola Marymount (D1)
    Colorado College
    At Texas A&M International
    At Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (D1)
    At Rutgers (D1)
    Johnson & Wales
At Utah Valley State (D1 provisional)
At National Provisional Tournament, Ft. Myers, FL
(vs. Utah Valley State, vs. Longwood)

SDSU men's current tally is ten D-I games confirmed or rumored (Butler, Fresno State, TBD @ Fresno, Tennessee State, San Diego State, Manhattan, Denver, UMKC, San Diego, Illinois-Chicago) and two confirmed D-II games. A home-and-home with NDSU and with Utah Valley State are likely, getting us to sixteen games

There will likely be another "National Provisional Tournament" at the end of the season like what UNC went to last year, so that gets us to 18 games.

You need 1/3 of your games at home, which is nine out of 28. So, assuming Michigan Tech, NDSU, Utah Valley State at home, there are six more required home games, getting us to 24.

So, four games left to fill out a season of 28 games...I'd like to see a money game or two (at Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Illinois) which would give an 11 or 12-game home schedule. Getting a D-I (other than NDSU or UVSC) into Frost is likely impossible in 04-05, so we may have to suffer through a parade of NAIA schools coming to Frost this year. Heck, anyone for a home-and-home with SDSM&T or Black Hills State?

      Re: D I opponents

Can I just tell you how fired up I am with this coming years schedule. It is much better then I expected. Ya, our home schedule won't be great this year but we have great away games and many of the teams will be in Frost next year. I am going to the San Diego State Game (SDSU vs SDSU has been a dream of mine since I was little) and the UMKC game (I live in the KC suburbs) for sure. I think I am going to try and make the Butler game, plus my usual 5 or 6 at Frost. Nice job by Coach Nagy, Coach Larson, and everyone in the Athletic Dept.!

      Go State! ;D

The good news...let's look at SDSU's new competition:
Purdue, 2004 final Massey rating:  3 (as in, only Tennessee and Connecticut were better last year in all of women's college basketball).
Rutgers, 2004 final Massey rating:  31
Kentucky, 2004 final Massey rating:  89.

Kentucky just hired a long-time assistant to Pat Summit from Tennessee as their head coach.

SDSU's final 2004 Massey rating, by the way:  73.

This is in the "beyond my wildest dreams" category...absolutely fantastic!  Congratulations, Aaron and the entire SDSU athletic program.

Do us proud, Lady Jacks!  Ring the Bells!
I was looking around at this site today and low and behold there was the SDSU logo posted with 7 other D-I schools.  Pretty Cool! It is official now.

It appears that Purdue must have replaced Oregon State in the tournament?  Or did they back out when they heard SDSU was coming? ;D

It's starting to really sink in on what SDSU is embarking on when you see visuals such as this. The page you link to on the SDSU site isn't bad when you see are recent Elite 8 appearences,Aarons record and our National Championship.

This illustrates how critical it is that the websites be state-of-the-art and up-to-date at all times. It will not be acceptable to have the season prospectus, latest schedule, press releases, etc.. either lagging behind or lacking substantial information. Mr. Lenz and the rest of the S.I. dept. had better be on their toes. We want to protray a professional attitude and enthusiasm about our move up to DI and one way to do this is through the electronic media. I hope the athletic dept is making this a priority (not that there aren't enough of those already).

I agree! You only get one chance to make a good first impression. I am glad that we have upgraded our web site this year. It is about as professional looking as any I have seen. Your point about keeping the information up to date at all times will be the challenge.

I noticed when I went to the Paradise Jam sight (which is so cool to see our Logo along with the others) and clicked on our Logo that you might have a hard time knowing we are a D-I school now. I think we should talk up our wonderful past in D-II after we acknowledge our even brighter future in D-I. Just a suggestion.

                  Re: D I opponents

I saw from other schedules that we also have an away vs. NSU, and that we have home games from Southwest minnesota State and concordia st. paul.  duluth appears to be afraid of another beating and is playing NDSU.  I think that we'll probably also get Bemidji into frost, and maybe one or two more D-IIs.  I also believe we have michigan tech coming to frost again (sorry if thats old info.)  Not what our schedule will look like in another year, but its better than a ton NAIA's.

No Fresno, Northern, or Michigan Tech on the men's schedule (yet). Northern got bumped for the other SDSU, and we're in Cape Girardeau when we were supposed to be in Fresno. That's scheduling in D-I, I guess.

Anyway, I'm excited! For every Upper Iowa there's a Manhattan or a Purdue, for every Loras there's a Kentucky.

                      From the Argus:

                      Jackrabbits' basketball schedule taking shape
                      By Chris Solari
                      csolari@argusleader.com

                      published: 6/24/2004

So far, only six to be played at Frost Arena

New York City, here come the Jackrabbits.

South Dakota State released a solid chunk of its men's basketball schedule on Wednesday, which as expected includes a lot of games on the road.

But some of those trips will offer SDSU a chance to test itself against some of the best that Division I has to offer, including a game against NCAA Tournament qualifier Manhattan on Nov. 27.

"We knew this would be the toughest year in terms of scheduling," said Jacks coach Scott Nagy. "We're a non-counter for Division I schools, and a lot of Division II teams don't want to play us if they don't have to."

Of the 19 games released so far for the 2004-05 season, only six will be played in Brookings. They are all against lesser-division opponents.

However, the Jacks will travel to such mid-major powers as Butler in Indianapolis, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and San Diego State. And, of course, Manhattan.

Nagy also said one game not yet on the schedule is against Illinois-Chicago, which also earned a spot in the NCAA's field of 65 last March.

SDSU will get guarantees to play some of the games.

"If you go and play San Diego State, they more than pay for you to come out and play," Nagy said.

Seven of the teams SDSU visits this year will make a return trip to Frost Arena in the 2005-06 season. The Jacks are required to have at least nine Division I games at home that season.

SDSU won't be a "counter" toward the Ratings Points Index until 2005-06, when the school is required to complete its first full Division I schedule per the NCAA's five-year transition plan. The RPI is a major factor for Division I teams to get an at-large birth in the NCAA Tournament.

Manhattan, Butler, Denver, Missouri-Kansas City, Tennessee State, Southeast Missouri State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee all will travel to Brookings in 2005-06.

Nagy praised assistant coach Troy Larson and the Jackrabbits' graduate assistants, who primarily crafted - and continue to make calls toward finalizing - the schedule.

"We're not done," Nagy said. "My guess is we'll have one or two others (at home) before this is all said and done."

It looks to me like both the men's and women's basketball teams will have a better than expected 1st year schedule in D-I. That is a credit to both outstanding coaching staffs.

                        Great Job!

I too am impressed with the schedules, we knew we would have some really small schools coming to Frost the first year.-Its only for one year. I think the Northern St. game will still will get rescheduled-probably in Brookings. I wonder what happened to the Fresno St. Tourney? and the Michigan Tech game? Maybe the contracts just arent signed yet. I know there will be a couple more good D1 games announced soon. Stay tuned!!!! I was surprised to not see Northern Colorado on the schedule-It may still be coming. After viewing our '05 football schedule, and with probably 10 + home D1 BB games in Frost in 05-06, It will be well worth the wait in not having many home games this year.

Most DI schedules aren't finalized until August. Not being in a conference at this time makes it seem like our schedule is lagging behind. I suspect more contracts will be signed in the next 6-8weeks. We are looking at least 20 games and maybe as many as 25.
